So all of a sudden you're writing his biography and have earned a Phd in PSH only hours after he dies. Quite arrogant.Quote: EvenBobMaybe, but he was an addict long before he was
famous. He said in an interview that in college he
liked anything that got him high and knew he had
a substance abuse problem way back then.

I quoted an interview he gave, I didn't write anything.
Go read it yourself, I did.
I really hate these types of arguments.Quote: FleaStiffHeck,, can you imagine how utterly cheap drugs would be if they were legal?
And how many people would be unemployed without our war on drugs?
High Demand: Price of legal marijuana soars in Colorado
Also, big government isn't going to stop employing people just because pot is legalized.
Quote: 98ClubsThe timing of his death coincides with a major heroin alert in te NYC area about Horse being laced with Fentanyl-based drugs.
Might be a more widespread thing, word here in W-PA is that there is bad junk on the streets. Made the news, junkies probably already knew.
Quote: Buzzard
Last I heard he sold everything and was living in a flea bag motel on Colfax Avenue. Of course we all know drug us is a victimless crime, don't we ?

Does anyone else wonder how many of America's enemies flood our streets with dope of any kind to weaken us and profit some nice greenbacks for themselves?
Yeah, remember that 108 pounds of ultra pure heroin the Mafia sent to NYC by car. It made headlines when it was seized but there was less of a splash in the papers when the elite Princes of the City police unit signed the evidence out of the Police Property clerk's office and sold it to the Mafia replacing the heroin with pancake powder in the property clerk's office.Quote: AZDuffman+1

America's enemies= the NYC police.
Quote: tringlomaneThe fact you recall a quote from that movie concerns me. And I actually saw that movie in the theater. :-\ But yes, I agree the post you originally quoted is a bit harsh. I was surprised that Hoffman got this much attention today, so obviously people do seem to give a "shart".
Why give a shit about some self indulgent piece of shit who left three kids behind.

A conspiracy theory being floated by AZDuffman.
I'm guessing the insatiable DEMAND for drugs is the one and only reason there will never be a shortage of drugs. Sorry, no conspiracy.
Quote: Sabretom2Why give a shit about some self indulgent piece of shit who left three kids behind.
The nerve of that guy ! Probably did not even have life insurance !
" In New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood where he lived, it was common to see the actor riding a bicycle and walking his children to the public school they attended. "

Just say no to drugs, people. He's probably going to hell.
I just checked with Satan and Phillip Seymour Hoffman hasn't showed up yet. I'll let you know as soon as I get the word.Quote: treetopbuddyJust say no to drugs, people. He's probably going to hell.
How did you know him? Did you work AC in the 80s? There were no casinos in Ontario in the early 80s?
Or is he a current player?
Quote: s2dbakerI just checked with Satan and Phillip Seymour Hoffman hasn't showed up yet. I'll let you know as soon as I get the word.
Just checked with The Flying Spaghetti Monster.....he said, that's what Seymour gets for Cheifin on the dope.
Obviously he was only thinking of himself when he died.
Suffice to say that Philip Seymour Hoffman was a truly gifted actor, one needs only to view his movies to affirm as much. A fabulous character actor who, at least speaking for myself, will be sorely missed.
May he Rest In Peace.
Quote: aceofspadesFrom the article:
Quote: NYTThe plastic envelopes near Mr. Hoffman’s body that were believed to be heroin were stamped with two drug brands: one had purple letters spelling the words Ace of Spades and the other had a red icon of the ace of hearts, according to a law-enforcement official.
I denounce any involvement!
But not deny?

I don't know what we're arguing about, but ONE mistake? He probably tempted death on many occasions, and it finally caught him.
Heroin overdoses are normally had by people who relapse: hence, a mistake, bad luck. Sorry, I assumed he was a career enthusiast. My bad.
Quote: onenickelmiracleHe made one mistake and it cost him his life. Maybe a little less dope and he wakes up never doing it again or gets reaccustomed and eventually quits. It's just bad luck and probably being so busy working had something to do with it. People die all the time in greater numbers and die years later from pharmaceutical drugs and nobody makes these judgements.
Luck had zero to do with it. I know lots of people working hard myself included. We don't use dope.
Athletics are somewhat similar. Many of you were athletes and you know the concentration and excitement that comes from competing and performing, especially if you happened to play on great teams and in championship competitions. There is a high to sports. Without a doubt. I've experienced that too.
The performance "high" is quite addicting. Ballplayers, fighters, actors often stay too long at their careers because they can't leave the stage that gives them that high. The famous "drunken actors" group of England (Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Robert Shaw and many more) enjoyed not only acting but acting while drunk.
I think for many of those who have experienced those "performance highs," drugs are a way to get something like it in non-performance situations. I knew a lot of actors and actresses who enjoyed getting high - a lot more often than the people who enjoyed getting high who worked more mundane jobs. For them it was the next best thing to being on the stage.
Obviously, there are many people who go the drug route but I think the performers have an added incentive - recreating what they experienced in their performances by altering their consciousness in a non-performance environment.
Quote: Sabretom2The celebrity worship is baffling. Torches, flowers, admirers, CNN special reports all for someone who made a living playing make believe. A lifetime committed to self. He died trying to pleasure self.
I never got how worked up people get over these famous people who die an untimely death. I didn't know anything about him, really, but even if I did I still do not get the sending flowers to some famous person you do not know. There are famous people who I would be sad for a day if they died, some I might "miss" because listening to them on radio or TV is to almost "check in" on them. But send flowers? Come on. You people didn't even know him.
Luck has everything to do with him dying or else he would be alive. His working could be a factor if he was trying to hide it waiting until he got back where he trusted his source and in the mean time, he lost his tolerance level being away from it too long. Luck, miscalculations, weakness, arrogance, it always plays a role in life.Quote: AZDuffmanLuck had zero to do with it. I know lots of people working hard myself included. We don't use dope.

Have we established yet why he had three names? Is it because there was already another Philip Hoffman in "the business"?

I heard that bad heroin killed 3000 people in NYC
last year. I usually look at it as weeding out the
gene pool, but Hoffman was a real talent. He blew
me away in Capote.
Quote: AZDuffmanSo his choice to do heroin was luck?
Have you never made a bad choice AZ? Never had unprotected sex, I assume you don't have aids, my appologies if you do. Never drove or rode drunk as a teenager/young man? Never got into a fight with someone who might have carried a weapon? etc. etc.
I expect you are like all of us, made several really bad decisions in your life but got lucky and didn't have to live with the possible consequences.
People don't start doing drugs because they want to be drug addicts and millions don't get addicted.

we used to hang together at greenwood racetrack....he was a $50 window guy.
edit.....and we had the same bookie.
I know people who might be influenced by someone like Jimi Hendrix (as a guitar player), but don't know any that wanted to emulate his death from heroin. If you're crazy enough to want to emulate someone's destructive crash & burn lifestyle, maybe leaving the planet early is best for all concerned.

Did you just call me a dummy?! There was, even on this site, but that users account (youtube) was suspended. I would guess if one goggled youtube, you might find it.
