What an actor this man was. His list of accomplishment is profound. My condolences to his family.
Quote: NYTThe plastic envelopes near Mr. Hoffman’s body that were believed to be heroin were stamped with two drug brands: one had purple letters spelling the words Ace of Spades and the other had a red icon of the ace of hearts, according to a law-enforcement official.

There but for the grace of God goes I.

I think actors are are predisposed to get hooked. Actors are almost always attention-whores. That is why they go into performing in the first place, they like the attention. But they are not "on" all the time. So they get high to escape being alone.
Again, God Dam the Pusherman. He was in detox last March, thought he licked it. OD'ed in the bathroom a la Lenny Bruce, found with a set of works in his arm by a playwright associate who had access to his flat. Good Lord.
He was very functional, lucid and discreet - insanity-free and bad press-free through it all. Always a pro on set, no Prima Dona press, the complete opposite of John Belushi, Linsday Lohan, and Robert Downey Jr. in his dark days. Few knew.
Discontinuity here, a real conflict for us of PSH, being seen as a sober, professional, on-the-ball, a "thank-God-for-him" talent who'd never be envisioned to go out like Lenny Bruce or John Belushi.
I bang my chest on this one.
Quote: AZDuffmanSo they get high to escape being alone.
Or fame and fortune wasn't what they thought
it would be and the disappointment is so great
they use drugs to escape.
One of the Vanderbilt's once said "The difference
between rich people and poor people is, the poor
still think money will help."
And the rich don't suffer from that delusion. They
know all money does is change your lifestyle, it
doesn't change all the things wrong with you personally.
This is why there are so many miserable lottery
winners.

"C" caffeine. I've had coffee that tasted like it should have a death card. One of those late night casino diners where they pot sat and cooked for hours with el-cheapo coffee that tasted like dirty rag water.

Damn Straight. Thank you. Hoffman played it as cold and as honest a gambling junkie as can be, ironically hiding it flawlessly until it all came crashing down. Uncanny parallel.
I will also say in that movie John Hurt played a superb "sublimely greasy and greedy casino manager" in Atlantic city who knew his deal but took his cash anyhow.
John Hurt heaped more disgrace on the gaming industry in that role than ANY I have ever seen.

I am glad that you have never had drugs touch your life directly or via your loved ones but people don't choose to be drug addicts.
Actually if you were to get hooked on anything from, a damage to your body point of view, heroin is probably is the easiest on your system. You can actually function quite normally well hooked on it if you don't have to spend all your time worrying about how you are going to get the next hit.

OTOH, heroin is probably the hardest one to break away from. It is the drug that really first destroyed the black community. Main drug that spreads AIDS. Not just hard to break away from but probably easiest to get hooked on. It is the last drug I would want to see a loved one get into.

I believe it was Steven Tyler who stated that the only drug harder to quit than heroin was nicotine

This seems harsh. But if you are going to go that route, who gives a 'shart' would be more appropriate. (From along came Polly). Lol

Always humor if you look for it out there.

The fact you recall a quote from that movie concerns me. And I actually saw that movie in the theater. :-\ But yes, I agree the post you originally quoted is a bit harsh. I was surprised that Hoffman got this much attention today, so obviously people do seem to give a "shart".
How dare he have an addiction that killed him. The nerve of that guy !

Quote: corvetteracingPhilip Seymour Hoffman sold his soul for fame & fortune, not realizing how alone & lonely it really was.
Maybe, but he was an addict long before he was
famous. He said in an interview that in college he
liked anything that got him high and knew he had
a substance abuse problem way back then.
Sort of a bum wrap. He was clean at the time and trying to help a friend of his's daughter get clean. Let her and kid move into house with him.
Narc had no knock warrant, found drugs in her bedroom dresser drawer. But he had the felony rap sheet. She overdosed before his trial. BAM 5 years. Lived in basement of my house for a year, got a job as truck mechanic. While living with me and Josie he broke up with a girl because she would go out drinking one night a week. He
bought a new Jeep, moved out, and I thought he had a chance to beat his addiction. WRONG
Last I heard he sold everything and was living in a flea bag motel on Colfax Avenue. Of course we all know drug us is a victimless crime, don't we ?
Very Sad, he was wonderful in Truman.
Quote: 98ClubsThe timing of his death coincides with a major heroin alert in te NYC area about Horse being laced with Fentanyl-based drugs. According to CNN the "Brand" found with him was "Ace of Hearts/Ace of Spades" .
They say the stuff he had was at least 6 years
old, he must have bought it and forgot he had
it. Typical druggie with money. He also forgot
how pure it was and it killed him.

Okay.... if there is to be any intelligent discussion about drugs and in particular heroin...please start with the following:
Most heroin addicts are addicted to the needle, not the heroin.
Most heroin overdoses lead to deep slumber its hard to kill someone with heroin and this 'overdose' nonsense is really hypersensitive reaction to trace impurities.
Most people on heroin do not get "strung out".
I've already mentioned the Newport Folk Festival and how a top performer can be high and no one even suspect it. Anita O'Day.
Thats why there are code words and phrases. "Anyone got one on"?
The greatest sales aid for a drug dealer is AA and its associated twelve step abbreviations galore: where else does the court sentence your customers to hear "I'm helpless against drugs and must go back to my dealer".
Heck,, can you imagine how utterly cheap drugs would be if they were legal?
And how many people would be unemployed without our war on drugs?
