While we are it, let's start removing all statues...

We might be back to the lady on money thread I was in here.. Such as, who is worthy to put on our money or in this case build statues to? Several people suggested we have the bar to low to put a lady on money because they don't measure up to the men currently on the money, but it's okay to celebrate the confederacy in some manner?

(I still think museums and graves are fine. I will even argue for historic preservation, when there is a reason.)

Nothing is greater is being pushed aside to celebrate the Confederacy. There are plenty of statues and other markers to plenty of women. But no woman in US History is more important than any of the men currently on our currency.

Bill Clinton honored the Confederacy when he was governor.

We move on as a society.
Sure many politicians honored the confederacy in the past. Big deal.
The list of Republicans asking for the confederate flag to come down is growing.
Nikki Haley
Reince Pribus
Lindsey Graham
Scott Walker
Jeb Bush
John Kasich
Rick Perry.

Walmart is refusing to sell any item with the confederate flag. All the merch is being pulled.

This is simply society moving forward in a positive way. What was acceptable years ago, such as gay jokes or using gay in a insulting way, is no longer acceptable. The flag is no longer acceptable on public property simply because its embraced by racists. Its like the swastika, its not acceptable on public property despite being an ancient religious symbol.
Its just a forum. Nothing here to get obsessed about.

I am a neoconservative and a firm nationalist. I do view the Rebel flag as just that, a sign of rebellion. And, in some (not all, not even most) it does have pro-rascist connotations.

All of that being said, I think that there are bigger issues in the world than what a state congress is flying outside.

Is it right? No. Am I going to lose sleep over it? No.

If they were flying it while preaching an armed rebellion against other states, then that would be cause for concern. But flying it for historical or traditional reasons is hardly anything to lose sleep over.

But on the other hand statues to war dead look somewhat different than statues to the various leaders of the war of your opponents. Build a monument featuring German soldiers, not various people like Rommel.

No, it is just simply more PC nonsense trying to erase history some people do not like. Similar to the destruction of words in "1984."

I don't mind that argument if it was something old and from the time period. But you don't keep flying the loser flag.

There's lots of stuff built by essentially authoritarian regimes of old I wouldn't take down. You don't tear down historic sites.

It is only being flown in a memorial area, and even that is too much for the PC police. They are trying to ban it anywhere. As if the flag is what killed 9 people. Easier to ban a symbol than confront what might have really caused the problem.

I am Southern (cap S). One side of my family lived on land 50 miles from here since the early 1700's, back to a land grant from the king I've been told.
They fought in the war between the states. Some died, all suffered.
I have a sentimental spot in my soul for the Confederacy, I don't know exactly why.
I really don't care that much if the flag flies over a memorial on the Statehouse grounds in SC.
It does bother me that the memorial itself will probably come under attack itself at some future date.
I have worried about the carvings on Stone Mountain for many years, fear they will eventually be deemed unacceptable.

I was raised by parents that were at least mildly racist.
I try hard not to be, but realize I am not guilt free.

I fly the Amrican Flag at my house on holidays and such, one those that flew over the White House that they run up the pole for a minute or so all day long.
That is primarily where my flag allegiance lies.

The fact that the South lost the war led to the preservation of a county that grew to be the finest the world has ever seen, at least so far, ( in spite of countless blunders ).
But it was a war between us, between ourselves, and that makes it different from any other war to me.
And the memorials to all involved, both sides, including all the many flags flown, have a special place in my heart.
I do not like to see them vilified or dishonored.

Just my $0.02

Very few advocate deporting every single illegal alien and closing the borders with excessive violence, walls, moats, etc. Very few advocate letting everyone in without regard for any existing laws. The problem is more that we can't find the middle any more and fix issues; it is all about making the other side out to be the devil while the side we are in is, of course, perfect.

We could do it just as the Mexicans do with their very own problem of illegal immigrants. Of course if we did it, everyone would scream about discriminatory racists!

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico now deports more Central American migrants than the United States, a dramatic shift since the U.S. asked Mexico for help a year ago with a spike in illegal migration, especially among unaccompanied minors. Between October and April, Mexico apprehended 92,889 Central Americans. In the same time period, the United States detained 70,226 "other than Mexican" migrants, the vast majority from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

That was a huge reversal from the same period a year earlier, when the wave of migrants and unaccompanied minors from Central America was building. From October 2013 to April 2014, the United States apprehended 159,103 "other than Mexicans," three times the 49,893 Central Americans detained by Mexico. The difference is Mexico's new Southern Border Program, an initiative that included sending 5,000 federal police to the border with Guatemala and more border and highway checkpoints. Raids on migrants increased and authorities focused on keeping migrants off the northbound freight train known as "the Beast," on which many have suffered mutilation injuries. usnews

Time for a change of pace.

Young Hillary supporter says "Finding out Hillary perpetuates the exploitation known as unpaid internships was like discovering that Santa wasn't real."

Next thing you know she will find out that Hillary stole equity from homeowners, gets paid more in an hour of speaking than many of her supporters get paid in five years, and made six figures in one trade in the "Wall Street Casino."

Really, by the dates you have to assume this girl is at least 24 and she thinks Hillary being elected is her best only hope. This is the kind of drone I talk about when I say that people want to be told what to do so bad they will listen to anything. Sadly, there are many like her on both sides. Though I would guess that on the right the guys expect to work for free if they work on a campaign.

Trump doesn't complain about the rich "not paying their fair share" or somehow stealing his money from the poor. Hillary does and claims she was broke. Hillary is among those that bragged they didn't "need" a tax cut yet never sent $1 of the cut they supposedly did not need or want back.

Destroying symbols, banning words, demanding adherence to certain beliefs (gay marriage, abortion on demand, etc.) The PC crowd will not stone you to death, just run you off campus, out of your job, or out of business.

But hey, I am just a little guy who can't change things. Just pointing them out, maybe someone is listening. Too much of the public cares more about what the newspaper at the check-out says than what is really going on.

The confederate flag is alive and well on private property.
What words are banned? The N word? well, its not a nice word but its hardly banned, listen to rap?
If you are against gay marriage, you have the right not to marry a male. That right will never ever be taken from you.

Give it time, sooner or later some pol somewhere will call for banning it probably under the guise of some zoning laws at first. Just look at the progression so far and follow to the goal.

Quote:

Google "college speech codes" to see what I am talking about. And the bans are getting more and more crazy. Even saying "why are you so quiet" is now considered offensive!

If you are against gay marriage, gays will call for a boycott of your business and then show up for a "gay kiss-in" to disrupt your business. Or they will demand you be fired as CEO. You have the right not to get an abortion, don't talk silly. But you can be forced to pay for abortion drugs that you do not want to pay for in an employee health care plan. Well, they relaxed that one, for now.

Hannity saying that isn't newsworthy. Probably not even worth knowing he said it, unless he was quoting Obama or Hillary, or a State Senator or Governor.

I wouldn't go as far as lower state legislators or even the House of Reps as there are some lunkheads, some known to me and some unknown who might say something similar.

Okay.

Been there. Climbed it as teen, if I remember correctly. (it was a school bus trip)

However if anyone would argue that it is simply a war memorial, I would argue, nah, when you put your top 3 guys on it you're celebrating your ideals of your cause.

Kinda like if they put Saddam and his top two henchman on a monument in Tikrit and called it a memorial to Sunni dead.

Bah, nobody is fooling nobody about intentions.

I wouldn't destroy it. Nor is the confederate flag being destroyed.

Could've fooled me. Of course I am the type that sees when things are done in an other than overt manner. I know that destroying the Confederate Battle Flag need not mean public burnings and bans like the Swastika is banned in Germany.

First, I believe these companies have every right to decide what to sell and not to sell and, within the laws of where they operate, who to can buy or not buy from them. I'm not complaining about the companies at all. I will not boycott them or anything like that.

We've done more talking about a FLAG over the days since the horrible RACIST TERRORIST MURDERS that happened last week. We're not talking about how to root out some of these loose cannons before they kill, we're not talking about how to lower gun crime realistically, and we're not talking about the victims of this jerk.

--Toss him away and throw away the key. He surely deserves the death penalty but it would be better if we never heard his name again. I will not type his name again and, if I should, it is an accident and not intended. Don't martyr a freak; other freaks might think that is a great way to gain fame. I'm not against the death penalty but we all know the Oklahoma bomber got more attention in death than he would if he was rotting in a cell in some Super Max prison.

--Hold politicians of all types accountable for not just calling for removal of the flag but by asking the hard questions about what we can do to improve racial hatred and animosity. Those are the answers we need. Saying that we should take down a flag may or may not be right, based on your point of view, but it is cheap theatre for the most part. No speeches necessary--just a press release saying we are getting rid of it would suffice.

--Make sure the victims and their families are taken care of as needed. Get them the right care and counseling to deal with this tragedy. Wrap the loving arms of the country around them. Talk about them. Don't talk about him.

--Have a genuine dialogue about how we can all get along better and reduce racism. We aren't going to all hang out together or whatever; we don't do that in our own races. We do need to treat everyone with dignity and respect.

Where is the leader that can help us do these things?

I saw it on my FB feed and it makes a good point. Will stores ban any communist flags being sold? That flag killed tens of millions. How about banning "The Communist Manifesto?" More proof that it is all PC.

Don't expect a leader to show up, there is too much money to be made from the racism-industrial complex. While I have seen instances of racism, I have just as much if not more seen claims of racism used as anything from an excuse to a shakedown. The reality is that if a person fires a minority for cause and the minority claims "racism" and costs that employer time and money to defend, well the next minority that applies has to overcome that.

The next phase of "stamping out racism" has to come from minorities. They need to say, "get rid of affirmative action, all it is doing is causing bad feelings and makes our abilities get questioned!" Their "leaders" need to call out looters, not back them up. And they need to quit being "offended" at every turn. They need to assimilate.

If the "answer" to this tragedy is, and we all know it will be, "white people need to do more!" then all that will happen is things will get worse.

I agree with your post all except the last part. I think part of human nature is to judge both off of their personal experiences and the experiences of others. Everyone is racist, sexist etc based upon their experiences or lack thereof. Does it have to go as far as say not hiring x race or x gender or x religion? No, but we are all guilty of it on one level or another. Have you ever been to a bar or restaurant and labeled someone as a d-bag without even knowing the person's name, or have you made judgments about a person on the road based upon what they are driving whether it's a 60 year old man in a Corvette or someone driving a Prius or someone driving a BMW or whatever it is. Saying we have to eliminate prejudice and racism is far to simplistic a solution in my estimation and it is a solution that cannot possibly work in any real society where people are allowed to think freely. Being in sales myself, I know there are different motivating factors for different races, cultures, religions etc, and you play to those specific motivating factors in order get the customer comfortable with you in order to move merchandise.

So correct yet so few will believe it and even fewer will use it.

Why are you talking about gay marriage?

I thought we weren't allowed to talk about that issue anymore? Because it's basically settled at this point. Or does that only apply to liberals talking about it because it is winning issue for them now?(and will be for the rest of time).

Wait....hasn't marriage always been gay? Webster's defines gay as merry, cheerful, given to social pleasures. Well maybe a "shotgun wedding" isn't so gay. lol.

I also would caution about the issue of gay marriage being a done deal. Might be in the next week, but I don't think it is the slam dunk that many people do. Justice Kennedy is likely the deciding vote. He has ruled in favor of gay rights in 3 other recent cases, which leads many to believe he will again. But, he is also a supporter of states rights, so those two kind of collide with each other in this case. In the end, the deciding factor may be his reluctance to make a ruling which would invalidate marriages and families, effecting children as well. He is very big on how decisions will effect families and children.

ps: although Kennedy is almost sure to be the deciding vote, it would not surprise my to see a much more lopsided 'official' decision, with some of the conservatives justices who oppose gay marriage joining in. In the end, the climate in this country has changed on this issue and will only continue in that direction as the younger generation, which is more tolerant takes over. In 50 years, when people look back, a Justice that ruled against will look to have been on the wrong side of history. These Justices, who are more concerned than most about their legacy, don't want that.

My prediction on gay marraige supreme court ruling.
9-0
Yup, you heard it here 1st.
Its about legacy.
The conservative justices see the writing on the wall, not just this country but the entire planet.
Ireland, a deeply religious catholic country, legalized it through voting.
I dont think the Justices want to be seen as being on the wrong side of history.
Its like slavery, we look back and cant believe the White Southern christian churches supported slavery.
Thats how state rights became an issue, due to covering up southern Christians supporting slavery that got us into a war over it.
They changed the subject to states rights. The south wanted to forget that southern white Christians supported slavery.
Its just a forum. Nothing here to get obsessed about.

Yeah, but half of them were drunk and didn't know what they were voting for. lol. Just kidding.

I was pleased, and being of Irish heritage, even proud of the Irish vote. Many of the older generation voted in favor of gay marriage, even though they personally, might not have been all that comfortable with it. Many separated personal feeling, with what they felt was the right thing to do. Sort of a "live and let live" philosophy, which I personally share.

I have no issue with Gay Marriage doesn't affect me either way, but when did it change from someone being able to be for or against something, to being considered "ignorant" or worse if they don't agree with the way the majority thinks?

Normal debate on both sides is long gone and it's so easy to call someone racist, homophobic or worse if they have a differing opinion.

So many days I'm glad I'm older because America is changing and it's not into a "Kinder, Gentler Nation".

Aaaahhh! The gay issue. My voice is so small I will not voice it here. I will say there are possibly valid reasons why much of the world cringes at the thought of, and is willing to go to war against the spread of 'western culture'.

Because there are no good legitimate reasons to be against marriage equality other than hate and/or prejudice. :)

I other words, you have no logical reason for it so you have to say those that do not agree are "haters." Got it, thought so!

I don't understand how you could get rid of prejudice or even if you want to. There are many things in my life I have learned that make me prejudicial when dealing with the same situation going forward. There is nothing wrong with it whatsoever. If I see the taillights of the car in front of me brighten up I am going to be prejudicial and assume that he is braking and unless I wish to end up in his backseat, I should probably do the same. I am prejudicial in deciphering sales pitches. I am prejudicial in deciphering which games I play when I enter a casino. The word prejudice has a stigma attached to it that is very negative, but it is a sign that you have learned lessons throughout your life. People aren't all the same. We can give everyone equal opportunity according to their own individual merits but you have to treat everyone differently as people respond to different things. there are different personalities and different motivations and different styles of learning for everyone out there.

The argument that liberals are hypocrites because they are intolerant of prejudiced people will never be a winning one for the bigoted people who push it.

That's how i feel. If Gays want to hit themselves
in the head with the marriage hammer, who am
I to stand in their way. Marriage is for the young
and starry eyed.. My wife has three nieces in their early
20's who are all deliriously happily married. Just
out of college, no kids yet, first jobs, I'm sure
they screw like monkeys all week long. Remember
these days, kids, you'll be living on memories sooner
than you think.

I'm gay. I have no desire to ever get married and/or have kids.

The Supreme Court ruling could come as early as tomorrow. Obviously I hope for a good outcome, as most people are predicting.

However, if the ruling is bad, it really doesn't affect me. It'll keep the issue alive in our politics. Dems can keep using it to win elections. That's the only bright side I could see from a bad ruling.

I may be confused, again, but I read that twice and think perhaps you agree with me? Semantics is tough. I'm getting senile and I wasn't all that bright to begin with ;-)
