hey! How are you? I miss you and your girlfriend! Glad you're coming! Another baccarat session or two for you and me at the Mirage? :)Quote: MidwestAPIt's been a while since I've posted, but I'm 95% sure that I'll make it out to WoVCon III this year. I'm definitely in for craps at MSS on Friday, love the brew and the 20x odds!
Also, I've spent more time in Margaritaville Las Vegas than I care to admit, comes from being a committed Parrothead, or should I say that I should be committed because I'm a Parrothead? Any how, it will be loud on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, that place is always busy! If we can swing it, depending on how many people we have, a real nice option would be to sit outside on the third level, less noise, better atmoshphere (in my opinion). I don't know about the heat at that time of year, but their table have umbrellas and if I remember they have mist machines up there as well if it gets too hot. Just something to consider.
If the place has not been decided yet I suggest the Grand Lux Café (Venetian) They have awesome food great menu with variety & quality pricing is good a bar to meet at quiet If you like the cheese cake factory you will love this place. calling casino management may also get a group discount
If not I suggest with proper planning and sending someone to a supermarket to pick up some local magazines or newspapers there are always some 2 for 1 or half off offers. places like hash-house a go go, Egg and I. crown and anchor has great British food Free with $20 played on VP.

You can count on it! Look forward to seeing you, that was a bizarre chance meeting last October!

You seriously expect me to invite the Wizard and his friends to the place he got fired from a few months ago?
indeed! But our baccarat sessions were a big highlight on my trip. And you should have a better, safer trip this time out. :)Quote: MidwestAPYou can count on it! Look forward to seeing you, that was a bizarre chance meeting last October!
Monkey! Monkey!
On other things, I would very much like to have lunch at the Peppermill this trip. I don't think that would work for the WoVCon lunch, though. But if anyone's interested, I'm available.
Other than that, I'm out of ideas. Unless someone is itnerested in a seminar about government acquisitions in Mexico (I know surrealism isn't big anymore) :P
I am positive everyone here can afford a full price meal anywhere but since most people here are all about value and good EV. I think there are many better, more value, less crowded and quieter options other then MV. So many Places With great value in all respects. There are other restaurants like (but not limited to, just in case TI fired him to) Kahunaville that have 2 for 1 coupons and. several places with Free lunch with only $20 play through on VP,V.BJ,V.Slots. I guess to me its like playing a 8/5 next to a 9/6
Anyway, I will wait and see what happens with that. And if I do come out I may only come out for a day or two. One concern of mine is that the Saturday lunch is so early. Noon may not seem very early to most people but if I end up driving out there that morning I am going to need to leave by 6 or 7am at the latest to drive directly to the lunch and make it on time. Plus if I rent a car I will have had to rent the car the day before in order to leave that early, and that will be an added expense.
Is everybody for noon as the meetup time?

Megabus "red-eye." Runs both ways.
Use in conjunction with the Deuce (or the SDX).
You'll have plenty of time.

Pretty much.
But I'm free the rest of the day and I expect a few others will be as well. We could arrange something. I odn't know whether the Wizard will be available then, though.
I'm just curious why it's being held so early in the day.Quote: NareedPretty much.

Tradition?
History aside, that's how it was done for both previous WoVCons. Also, if memory serves, Mike has dinner with his family on Saturdays, but I don't know how firm that is. Finally, the casinos are less crowded in the afternoon.
Of course, we could meet for gaming first, then for dinner somewhere. But most people planning to attend may have made plans for that evening already. We'd have to ask and/or take another vote.

Noon is the standard lunch time, isn't it? I think it's too late in the game to change the time, as a lot of people have already made plans.
No I understand that's the standard lunch time, I guess I was just curious why the meetup was being set for lunch time specifically. Even a while ago I had been thinking that there might be some people from the site who would be flying in that Saturday who would want to meet up but who would not be able to since they may not get there early that morning. I've been trying to round up some girlfriends to come out with me that weekend and it's just going to be way harder for my friends to want to come that weekend if they have to be awake and on the road to Vegas at 6 or 7 in the morning. I'm just trying to make this work.Quote: AcesAndEightsNoon is the standard lunch time, isn't it? I think it's too late in the game to change the time, as a lot of people have already made plans.

You want to be in charge of finding a restaurant with seating for 15 on a Saturday night during Memorial Day weekend in Vegas? :-P
As for the name, I think the "Con" part was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but then stuck. I do see your point about how this is an underwhelming event for such a title. I'd be in favor of formalizing the peripheral events in future years (like the unofficial meetup on Friday, plus whatever Saturday night and Sunday's plans end up being, plus your friend's gig Monday, etc.) Basically, make it more like a true convention. Of course, that would be easier/better if there were more attendees. As we grow as a community, that may be a self-correcting problem.
1) guided walking tour of Old Las Vegas
2) group photo at the infamous Las Vegas sign
3) zip line on Fremont Street
4) Las Vegas Guided Day Tour (bus tour)
I'm totally down to do #3 again!Quote: MrVFWIW, a couple options under the category of "things for the group to do in Las Vegas:"

I've actually never been to the sign - I would be down for a pilgrimage and a photo. I'm guessing those who have been there once or twice have no desire to go back, but it could be a nice side-trip.

I just googled the live web cam for the sign. There was a gal in a bikini top doing jumping jacks. She's gone now.

I've been past it :)

I guess I should have my photo taken there ;) Sure, what time do you suggest? We could schedule it for after the gaming session Saturday, seeing as we'd all be there in one place already.
I think this is a fun idea. Get the WoV forum members together for a group photo in front of the sign. Count me in!Quote: AcesAndEightsI've actually never been to the sign - I would be down for a pilgrimage and a photo. That makes three. Let's pencil it in at "after the gaming session Saturday."
Does anyone know whether the SDX stops there or reasonably nearby?
I looked up airplane tickets and they are ridiculous. I also looked into car rental prices which aren't so bad in comparison and I'm now looking up bus prices as a cheap alternative. If some of my friends come out I won't have to worry about transportation there and back but at least I can have a backup plan meanwhile.
Excited to be coming out! Hopefully there will be some of you who, other than the Saturday lunch, will want to get together later in the day that weekend so I can relax for a bit in the mornings and afternoons.
Last year, the main event started at noon on Saturday and continued for about five hours before the group completely splintered, as far as I know. However, on Friday night, my wife and I were involved in several events: dinner with Nareed at MSS, followed by a play at the Plaza w/o Nareed but with Tiltpoul joining us, followed by craps back at MSS with Tiltpoul, Nareed, loach, rdw4potus, TIMSPEED and his mother, and maybe some others. From start to end, my Friday night activities with WoV folks lasted about 5 p.m. to midnight. We also got together on Sunday afternoon and evening.
This year, I would not be at all surprised if some of the people who meet for Saturday lunch follow that with a gambling session and are still together for dinner and perhaps evening activities, too. There are plans for Friday afternoon that could also extend into the evening, and I'll be somewhat amazed if there are not Sunday activities, too. Some of us will be departing town on Monday, so we'll miss out on the band gig that night.
As for a photo at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, I could go for that. There seems to be a crowd there every time I drive by. I can provide the camera, and I'll at least have my little gorilla-grip tripod, if there is something suitable to grip it to. It worked for us last year. I don't usually try to carry a full-sized tripod when I am going by plane. I'll think about it. Also, I will have a rental car, so I could provide transportation for a very few others. If we go to the sign from some place we have already congregated, there might be enough vehicles with the group for us to make it without flagging a bus.
Quote: HotBlondeI've been given permission to announce that aceofspades is coming out that weekend as well and will be staying on the strip. He'll be there for all the weekend events.
Holy crap! The man, the legend...will we get to witness one of his live-blog trip reports in person???!?!?!!??111!1?

You'll have to be satisfied with party favors. This year I may include booze-filled candy. Sorry :)
BTW, if anyone's allergic to nuts, coconut, milk or suffers from diabetes, please PM me.
Quote: DocName tags? How about we say that anyone who is signed up for the event and shows up totally, blotto, falling-down-don't-know-where-they-are drunk can get their user name tattooed onto their forehead, courtesy of their WoV friends?

Not a bad idea, but can we add hotel and room we are staying in so that if any of us show up ...

Quote: HotBlondeIs the sales tax in Vegas 8.1% still?
Excluding hotels and live entertainment taxes, yes, it's still 8.1% and is the highest in the state, big shocker. Still a little lower than my sales tax at home though.

Heck, there's lots of casinos, too.
Quote: tax-lawsIn Nevada, food for human consumption, such as grocery items, are exempt from sales and use tax. However, the sale
of prepared food intended for immediate consumption is taxable. NRS 360B.460 and NAC 372.605 define prepared
food intended for immediate consumption to be:
1) food sold in a heated state or heated by the seller;
2) two or more food ingredients mixed or combined by the seller for sale as a single item; and
3) food sold with eating utensils provided by the seller, including plates, knives, forks, spoons, glasses, cups,
napkins, or straws.
The prepared food being sold at retail need only fall into one of the 3 categories listed above to be considered prepared
food intended for immediate consumption.
Example 1: A retailer sells hot coffee to a customer. This is a taxable transaction as the food (coffee) is sold in heated
state making it prepared food intended for immediate consumption.
Example 2: A retailer sells submarine sandwiches made to order. This is a taxable transaction as the sandwich is
comprised of two or more food ingredients mixed or combined by the seller for sale as a single item making it prepared
food intended for immediate consumption.
Basically, if you're smart, you can avoid tax on stuff like canned drinks. It's more important sometimes, the temperature of the item than whether or not it has sugar in it. Sometimes a convenience store will charge you for a cold soda, and sometimes they will charge you assuming it's warm.
The laws are a little vague here basically on sales tax. The locals gas stations sometimes "forget" to charge sales tax on cold sodas has been my experience.
Basically, you pay extra to have a cold soda!!
