Then you should come to town the day before, join us at whatever time on Friday evening, and get together with us for lunch (at least) on Saturday. Doesn't seem reasonable to drive nine hours (round trip) just for lunch.

My sense is that HotBlonde means to arrive that day, not that she's coming only for the day.

What days and times are the get-togethers? I had planned to come out on Saturday cuz I thought that was the day everyone was getting together. So people are getting together on Friday? What are the events planned and what are the days and times so I can plan accordingly.

There's a plan to meet on the afternoon of Friday May 24th at the Main Street Station for craps. So far only Doc, AcesAndEights, and I have expressed an interest in that. There's no firm time set, but I was thinking around 2 pm.

Then there's the WoVCon lunch May 25th at the Forum Shops at 12 pm.

That's all there is.

If anyone's interested, my plan is to stay in Vegas until June 8th.

HB, for what it is worth, I have reined in my weight and seemingly improved my health using a combination of discipline, regular exercise, and dietary change.

I walk daily, work out at a fitness club daily, and rarely eat meat and dairy, opting for a mostly plant-based diet.

Good luck.

Perhaps I should note that there is certainly a possibility that more will get planned over the next six weeks. Last year, when we finally got to the WoVCon][ weekend, we had group get-togethers on Friday evening for craps at Main Street Station, Saturday lunch (the "official" Con) at Four Queens Chicago Brewing Co., Saturday afternoon for gaming (craps, blackjack, and others) at El Cortez, and Sunday evening for some more craps at Fiesta Henderson -- we hoped to have PaigowDan dealing to us, but he was on other games and never had openings for us at his tables. I did post a couple of photos from some of those happenings.

We also had sub-group activities. The ones I participated in included dinner Friday evening (with Nareed), a stage play of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas at the Plaza (with Tiltpoul) early Friday evening before the craps session, and casino hopping down Boulder Highway (with Nareed) on Sunday afternoon before going to Fiesta Henderson. The year before, my wife and I got together with member Croupier and his wife for several activities, including a visit to Hoover Dam, and we also had dinner after WoVCon I with the Wizard and Gofaster87.

None of that sub-group stuff was thoroughly planned before we got to Las Vegas. If you can come to town a day or so early and plan to stay for a few days, just let people know that you are there and how to reach you, then you will probably hear of more opportunities to have a little fun with the weirdo folks you met on the internet.   ;-)

It seems that a lot of the activities occur downtown. Is there a reason for this? I don't mind going downtown but I'm more of a Strip girl.

I guess I can plan to come out on Thursday and stay till Monday perhaps. That's what I was trying to figure out: when to come down and how long to stay.

Besides the fact that I stay Downtown? Well, MSS has 20X odds for craps and it's a very nice place. The play Doc and Tiltpoul wanted to see was Downtown.

The first two years, the official WoVCon was downtown (Main Street Station in 2011 and Four Queens in 2012). That led to a lot of the other activities being downtown, too. Some members prefer downtown to the strip; I visit downtown every time I go to Las Vegas, but I have never stayed there. MSS was chosen for craps last year in part because of advantageous rules for which none of us bet high enough to draw the benefits.

This year, Nareed specifically selected a place on the strip for the WoVCon ]I[ lunch, to give us a different experience and perhaps to attract a different group of members to join us. I have no idea where all of the additional activities might take place. I don't even have a hotel reservation yet. I always rent a car in Las Vegas, so my wife and I are able to attend activities most anywhere in the city.

I have nothing against downtown, there's just way more to Vegas than just downtown. I usually don't spend much time downtown but had fun with AcesAndEights and teddys when I was down there in October. I think Main Street Station is where the 3 of us played craps. I had bad luck there, and since the three of us were placing the same bets (1 passline bet with 2 come bets, all with full odds I think, although I don't remember it being 20x, I think it was 3-4-5 but they can correct me if I'm wrong), I think we all did poorly. And I wouldn't mind doing the ziplining again. I was pretty tipsy at that point and teddys and I had fun doing that. That was super fun. But the reason I don't spend much time downtown is cuz I like to keep my money in the MGM Resorts. Gambling downtown isn't as fun to me. I guess I get more of a kick out of being rated for my play and the comps I get from racking up my points with the MGM properties. Plus I like most of their facilities and like to hop between them all.

I had not one but two Apple ][e computers back in the day, one at home and one at work. I loved them. They were my first real computers. Those were easy to use, though of course they were very simple machines. At home I even had a duo-disk. Remember the 5.25" floppies one could flip over and double the storage capacity? You just had to nick the cardboard side to "make" them readable on that side. It's amazing that one could do actual work on them, and play some games even (Actually the old version of Lode Runner was the best ever, with Apple's twin-button joystick capability).

I was thinking next year's event should be WoVCon Quatro, but I'd really like to visit Rome and Greece next year. So the name will be up to someone else.

Bump time.

Changing tracks a bit, WWI was such a massive act of collective idiocy and had such dreadful consequences, that one can't help but to pose all the possible counterfactuals imaginable.

What if the war had been avoided? What if the Alliance had won (the "Allies" were the Triple Entente; the "German" side was the triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungarya nd the Ottoman empire)? What if the US had stayed out of the war? What if the Entente powers had imposed a more reasonable peace? And more.

Would any of these have avoided the rise of Communism in Russia, the rise of the Third Reich, World War Two? By extension, too, the Cold War? How would other things ahve progressed differently? Technology, science, etc?

We'll never know.

The Wizard does the trivia contest and furnishes the prizes as well.

I wouldn't even try to stick in much history if it were up to me. I might go the route my much esteemed junior high school teacher did and ask just four questions, each of which requires at least one full page of hand-written answers. Thins like "What are the antecedents for WWI?" A good answer begins with Napoleon! Or "What was the lasting impact of Napoleon's reign?" Things like that.

No. If I were doing the trivia questions, I'd stick in every last obscure science fiction story I've ever read. ;)

I like the brews at MSS as well. I generally spend more time on the strip as the best blackjack rules are generally at the MLife properties there. But downtown has been slowly growing on me. For this trip I'm staying comped at Paris, but for future trips I'll probably try to get some comped rooms downtown.

I stayed Downtown for the first time last year, at the 4 Queens. This year I plan on staying there as well. Gambling there is more to my taste (ie lower limits, good craps and VP), and everything's nearby rather than a substantial hike away.

My only complaint is the late-night noise. But that stops around midnight, and once I adapt to the time difference it stops being a problem.

I've been re-reading some Ah stories set in "Roman" times. Right now I'm in the middle of Silverberg's series of novellas called "Roma Eterna." I'm rather disappointed at having technology more or less proceed at the same pace in these imaginary universes. Still, they make for a mostly good read. What I can't quite believe the Roman Legions at their height could not subdue the people of Yucatan.

Silverberg's gimmick for an eternal Empire is that the Jews were never led out of Egypt, and ergo Christianity never arose. In his "Agent of Byzantium" series, Turtledove posits an eternal Byzantine Roman Empire where Mohammed converted to Christianity rather than develop Islam. Interesting parallels, eh?

Yeah those tables were ICE cold. 20x were definitely offered, but none of us were taking advantage of it, at least early on. I think we were probably doing 3-4-5x or I might have been going 5x on everything.

I do remember right before we left, I thought "fuck it" and started betting $5 base bets with $100 odds on everything. The table got even colder and make quick work of my meager remaining bankroll.

I used to be a dedicated dark side player, actually. But I have a hard time playing the don'ts when I'm with friends who are playing the right way.

I would looooove to get a group of WoV-ers to take over a table for the dark side :)

Last year we tried to do that, some of us anyway, at the MSS gathering.

Alas, it seems I'm a terrible Dark Side player, as I cheer just as much as though playing the Pass Line. But if that doesn't bother you, we could do a little DS corner at the MSS or, the next day, at the CR. I'd favor the latter, as at $3 per bet I'd either lay odds above 5x or lay more DC bets.

Again I'm too tired to think cogently.

So just oen quick observation:

By the nature of their respective governments, Republican history reads more like a series of events, while Imperial history is more a series of emperors and what they did. This is not to say the rulers were unimportant in the Republic, or that events were not important in the Empire. Only that the histories are framed differently.

Still, had the Republic established the Consualte with longer terms, say 4 years rather than one, Republican history would ahve been framed differently from the start.

i didn't know that you had lost a lot of money. When the three of us were walking down Fremont afterwards I remember you left in a huff. Curious as to why you left so suddenly teddys suggested that you most likely left cuz you lost a lot of money.

I'm not sure if its officially one of the Wizard's commandments but I've heard it suggested many times not to raise your bets when we're down. I've made this same mistake you did too, and plenty of times. The funny thing is the times I've done hat I've always ended up digging myself even deeper in the hole. You'd think I'd have learned by now!

On a side note, I usually keep my odds working during a new come out roll when I have come bets covered with full odds. I don't remember if I did that during that run that we were on. Maybe all of us kept them working, I don't remember.

Also, why the :/ next to your "40 days till Vegas" signature? Are you not looking forward to your trip?

I would looooove to get a group of WoV-ers to take over a table for the dark side :)

i could be interested in doing this.

I'm looking forward to meeting rdw4potus as he was one of the ones who contributed to my HB Challenge win. Not sure if he's looking forward to meeting me though as he seemed to voice disapproval of me right at the end of the challenge for some reason if I remember correctly and ended up not paying me in person.

And Nareed, I must say I think you've officially hijacked your own thread!

I am planning to attend the Saturday lunch so that I can meet a few of you. It is my anniversary weekend so I probably won't be joining all of the festivities unless I can convince the wife to join us. I know she has met and worked with the Wizard in the past, but she gets enough gambling and nerdy talk just from me so she won't likely attend.

Yep, I'll be there. Most likely Friday night craps get together and the main lunch on Saturday, but I'm only guaranteeing lunch. I'll have been in since Wednesday night, so if my bankroll is getting its ass kicked I may skip craps at MSS. Also I'll be just over a month out of ACL reconstruction surgery - I should be pretty mobile, but depending on how my knee feels, I probably won't be doing as much walking as a normal Vegas trip for me. Sadly this means no hiking with the Wizard either, if that happens.

i didn't know that you had lost a lot of money. When the three of us were walking down Fremont afterwards I remember you left in a huff. Curious as to why you left so suddenly teddys suggested that you most likely left cuz you lost a lot of money.

Eh, mostly I didn't have any interest in the zip line and wanted to gamble more. I definitely should have gone back to blackjack, but I had drank too many micros at MSS so I just played more craps without you guys. Nothing against you or Teddy at all :).

Pretty sure we all kept them working. I still like this strategy, even though dealers and other people always give me the "told ya so" look when a 7 rolls on the come-out. I try to give them the same look when one of my numbers hits on the come-out. It's a 0EV move, anyway, just increases your variance. Playing a -EV game, you need all the variance you can get to have a chance! That's the way I look at it anway.

Oh no, I'm totally looking forward to it! The face will change as the date gets closer. I think once I cross the 30 day threshold, it will change to a :). It was a crying face :'( when it was over 90 days.

I'm still game for a Don't Pass Block at any table, anywhere at any time.

Yes. I'd be further along Roman history if I didn't keep making interruptions for this WoVCon thing no one cares about ;)

Oh, you know how it is. I try to avoid hot blondes whenever possible - what guy doesn't? :-P

I missed the weigh-in because I had to leave town to meet with a customer. Doing that meant that my employer paid for the travel part of my vacation. The dollars are pretty close, I wonder how they'd feel if I accounted for things as though they covered my payment to you instead?

Bump time.

The Second Punic War eventually ended at the Battle of Zama, where Scipio made mincemeat out of Hannibal's army.

Some years later as Rome was flexing its muscles on the eastern Mediterranean, Scipio was sent to the court of Antiochus III of the Seleucid Empire (also known as Antiochus the Great) on a diplomatic errand. he was received with all honors due to his rank, which included a State dinner. Among the guests was Antiochus' military adviser: Hannibal.

That must have been an interesting conversation.

Alas, Antiochus failed to make good use of Hannibal early on, which led to eventual defeat at the hands of the Romans over the fate of much of Greece.

Also, in my opinion, Windows 8 must be destroyed.

That may be the best non sequitur I've heard in months. Well done! Have you considered OS X?

Excellent, HB! I have been using Macs exclusively since '88, and I like to kid Nareed about her frustration in attempting to use the "user-friendly" hardware and OS.

You're right. It must be destroyed, too. But I only have time for one system.
