I have a new game/puzzle/waste of time for us to participate in.
Its called the black sheep game. Points are awarded for correct answers, but unique answers score less points. The winner is the person who scores the fewest points, hence the player who doesnt follow the crowd is the most likely winner.
For example, if I asked you to name a primary colour (yes colour, and not color ;-) and you say 'RED'.
The results come in, and look like this;
Red : 10 people pick red
Blue : 7 people pick blue
Yellow : 5 pick yellow
You will score 10 points for Red, 7 if you choose blue and 5 if you choose Yellow. *IF* for some reason you say purple? You get 20 points, double the worst possible answer.
I will post the first set of 10 questions below. Please PM me your answers. Results in 7 days. Please post to say you sent a PM, I want to keep the thread bumped up for the 7 days, so we get a lot of results. I think the results will be quite interesting. Most of the questions are very easy, and some have only a small number of answers.
Good luck!
2) Name a blackjack side bet, as listed on the wizardofodds. (the bet must be as listed)
3) Name an English Premier League Football team from the 2011/12 season.
4) Name one of the TOP5 US states by population (as of April 1st 2010 census).
5) Name a Tom Hanks film.
6) Name a Michael Jackson (or Jackson5) US no.1 single.
7) Name a US fast food chain (not a single store and currently operational).
8) Name a character from the main 4 male lead roles of The Big Bang Theory.
9) Name a person (forum name) who has been banned from wizardofvegas.com indefinately (people with multiple accounts count as the same person).
10) Name a recurring fictional character from the simpsons. (recurring = more than one episode, for example Gary Coleman with 3 episodes would be exempt, as he is not fictional)
Quote: odiousgambitI have honest confusion about one thing: purple is not a primary color. So why not just have a wrong answer for each question?
Lowest score wins. Not highest.

Like Golf! OK, I get it and will give it a try.
Some interesting answers already!
Quote: AyecarumbaGood Times! Thanks for running this WoE.
:-)
Your welcome, believe it or not, the questions took some thinking.
I tried to vary the quantity of answers, it will be interesting to see if people go for the outright obscure, or do the bluff and pick the most common, or the double bluff and pick the most rare again, obv the more data we collect, the better it will be. Maybe the results will influence the next black sheep / sheep golf game?

There are many potential strategies which make it very interesting. Administration can quickly become a bear if you get many entries. There are a lot of folks on the board. When does this round of entries close?

I have a speadsheet ;-)
One week, want as many entries as possible, ideally the same sample size for the gold price game.
Once the results are in, someone here might be able to tell us what they mean??
I'll take a look at the questions and get some answers to you soon.
Some good answers in there.
Quote: WizardofEnglandBump for more entries
By my count, you're missing one joke.
Quote: DinYour game inspired me to create an account. I can't wait to see the results.
Welcome to the forum!
Thanks for your answers.
Would be good to break 20.
Thanks!!!

Questions #4 and #8 have a very limited set of answers. Are you going to score the contestants by 1-4 and 1-5 depending on the rank, or are you going to score them by the number of people who have chosen that answer.
For example if there are 9 people that choose the same male lead, and 8 people that choose the same state, if you are in either group you are effectively out of the running to win if you get an 8 or 9. It is doubtful that you can have enough unique answers on the other questions to win the game.
4) Name one of the TOP5 US states by population (as of April 1st 2010 census).
8) Name a character from the main 4 male lead roles of The Big Bang Theory.
I personally think a rank score would make the game less dependent on these two questions, and thus a little more interesting.

This is what makes the game theory interesting. When there are a limited number of selections, and the goal is to be in the minority, how do you play it? It reminds me of the "Iocane" poison dilemma in the movie, "The Princess Bride".
i would be interested to see both the lowest and highest responses
for each answer in addition to the overall winner.

I do think that dialogue was inspired in the movie. But you still have to go through all the machinations to make your guess.
With regard to the states, the difference between population of the 5th and 6th state is about 1% (and zero electoral votes in the upcoming election). So unless you have this ranking memorized, you would have to look up the answer. Now you can assume that you have the least popular answer because you had to look it up, or you can assume everyone looked it up and they will all choose the same answer.
I am just suggesting that one question shouldn't carry so much weight in the final tally.

I hope people didn't look things up. I assumed that this contest involved knowing the material and selecting an answer based on the strategy. For one question, I knew of only one answer, so that's what I had to go with. More than likely, this is a common answer if people didn't look it up.
As for one question bearing a lot of weight, I don't care. Actually, it will be interesting to evaluate each question individually and maybe hear the reasoning behind some answers.

Name an English Premier League Football team from the 2011/12 season.
I may not have understood the rules then, because I only knew of one British soccer team, and that is only because they are the biggest sports franchise in the world. I didn't even know what the Premier League was. If I was restricted to teams I knew, then I had only one answer.

Oops. I didn't even think about not looking things up. I'll go put on my dunce cap.
I've been to Vegas about 12 times, but I can't name all of the strip casinos, or can I?
I certainly don't know any BJ side bets, especially when they are restricted to only bets listed on WOO.
As mentioned, I think I may know of 2 teams from the Premier League.
I understood the point of this game is not to test inherent knowledge, but instead, see who the lone wolfs are, as opposed to those who run with the pack.
WOE, I will be submitting answers tomorrow
I also think the small categories make the game more interesting, without swaying anyone one way or the other, one of the smaller categories has a 'rank' system, even if its not obvious. The results of this category are already very interesting. Also one of the bigger categories (20+ answers) has a large % all on one answer, once the answers are out, I want to know why!
Quote: WizardofEnglandI actually dont mind if you look things up. The point of the quiz isnt really about right or wrong answers. But if you want to play without looking things up, thats fine too. Theres not much on the line, and I want a big a sample size as possible. I might offer a small $$$ reward for the next one, and hopefully I will learn a few things from this one.

If I had to venture a guess, I would think the Premier League question would be the one with the same answer, due to American's small exposure to the information. If you are a football (soccer) fan, you can find Premier League games on TV, and of course the Internet, but other than that, about the only exposure a non fan will get is when there are fan problems.
Since a fair number of people have played without looking up answers, I too will submit my answers without looking anything up.
Also, the reason WOE has to penalize wrong answers, is not because the answer is wrong, but because wrong answers would guarantee that person gets a score of 1, since no one else is apt to pick the same wrong answer. That would really mess things up.
WOE, I do suggest one scoring change now though. Instead of a wrong answer getting double the highest score, the wrong answer should only get equal to the highest score. Since people are not looking up correct responses, guessing in good faith should not be construed as cheating (like choosing purple as a primary color).
I will word the rules and questions a LOT better in round two.
At this stage I dont want to comment on which category has the surprise answers, as I dont want to influence the results. But I predict the results will be a good debate :-)
