My understanding is that one way to tip the dealers in craps is to place a bet for them on the pass line. I also understand that the tip can be less than the table minimum (i.e. having a $5 chip for yourself on the pass line and having $1 chip for the dealers on the pass line).

I was reading in the tipping thread where someone would put a $1 chip on the pass line for the dealers and then put $2 behind it as an odds bet after the point was made.

I would like to try this method of tipping, but have a question:

If you do an odds bet for the dealer on a $1 dealer pass line bet, is the odds bet supposed to be in a multiple that somehow relates to the odds on whatever the point number is? Or is correct to do a $1 pass /$2 odds bet for the dealers regardless of what the point is?

Blount -
It is always correct (and very cool and appreciated) to put $1 on the pass line and $2 in odds for the dealer. Very Fine.

1. If a point of six or eight is hit - odds pay $2, which is fine.
2. If a point of 5 or 9 is hit - $2 odds pay $3 for the dealers.
3. If a point of 4 or 10 is hit - $2 odds pay $4 for the dealers.

As a dealer, the pass line tip bet with odds is the most impressive and appreciated by the dealers, - much more than a dollar hardways, which is hard to hit.

As long as you're doing other bets, dealer bets that are below the table minimum are acceptable, because, in reality, you've got $6 on the pass line.

$1 plus $2 is fine.

If the point is 4 or 10, ANY odds bet will pay correctly, since it's 2:1.
If the point is 5 or 9, then any EVEN odds bet is ok, since it pays 3:2.

If the point is 6 or 8, the $2 odds bet will only pay $2 (Correct payment would be $2.40). So the dealers lose a little on the deal, but they're just as happy that they got a tip at all, so it's OK.

LOL I think you are referring to my thread, where I almost punched the off duty craps dealer at the bar?

The dealers will love you putting down pass line along with odds for them!

Good dealers always appreciate players that put bets down for them. If you're the shooter, the dealers won't mind if you want to do you're little pre roll dice ceremony. Take awhile to set the dice or ask for different dice if their getting a crack at tips. They'll often be more helpful to you and remind you of anything you might have forgtten (odds on that come 8 sir?) Sometimes they'll "forget" to take down pass line or come bets if there's a seven out. (oops)

As the old saying goes 'two way is always a bet'.

I do remember reading your thread when it came out and thinking how wrong that dealer was! I didn't pick up on your tipping style at the time, but now that I go back and read your thread again I see that you are doing exactly what I was asking about with the $1/$2 tip bet.

The one I was referring to in my OP was said by Doc in the "Tipping Inside Casinos" thread that I was looking at a little while ago. I guess you and Doc have very similar tipping styles!

A week ago, when I stopped at the Tri-State casino in Cross Lanes, WV for lunch and a little entertainment at craps, I wasn't sure whether I was seeing subtle hustling or genuinely appreciative dealers.

As usual, I was the low roller at a crowded table. When the dice came to me, I accompanied my $5 pass bet with $1 for the dealer. When I played double or triple odds for myself, I added double odds ($2) for the dealers. With an even-number point, I also placed $1 hardway for the dealers as I made an equal bet for myself. On a percentage basis (compared to bets for myself), I was probably the real George for the table, but the actual amount of dollars bet/won for the dealers was only moderate, even though I had a very good roll.
