Quote: FleaStiffFor some reason I am reminded of the decades-old movie of a Beverly Hills housewife and two daughters who are suddenly uprooted to rural Australia. The California kids have all these electronic devices for music-listening, the Australian kids play their own musical instruments, The Americans are dumbfounded to learn that the expensive diesel-generated power goes off at 8:00pm.
It is similar with the equipment and inclination for home baking and caning. We may have become to reliant on consumer packaged goods,
I have a breadmaker somewhere, but I pretty much never used it to bake bread; I couldn't get the bread just the way I wanted it, whereas I could get store-bought bread to my satisfaction quite easily. Pizza dough, and bagel dough for bagel dogs, on the other hand, I make myself with my stand mixer.
But what's "caning"? Sugar cane? Candy canes?
(House lightbulb moment) Do you, by any chance, mean canning? It's not called the Las Vegas (and Eastside) Canery, after all...
Very few products in general are sold out or short, so that's good to see. Hopefully it stays that way whenever the peak hits, they extend lockdowns, and people start to panic a little more.

I've recently been placed on a junk food diet by the quacks but I ain't got no transportation to the grocery store and now all these beans and lentils are verbotten and things like sugar and butter are back in vogue, so i'm binging on what little junk stuff I have in the larder and debating with myself justhow long I should embrace the quack's current whims.
Quote: TigerWuWent to the store today... TP gone. Flour gone. Eggs gone, even the prepackaged stuff and Egg Beaters. Rice gone, but oddly still plenty of pasta. Tons of bread, no limit on purchase. Tons of milk, limit two per customer. Tons of meat. Frozen veggies very low. Vegetarian meat alternatives almost gone. Tons of produce.

I just got back and really the only thing out of stock was TP and BBQ sauce.
I did go to a Dollar General the other day and they had plenty of TP, and everything else.
Haven’t seen hand sanitizer for almost a month now, though.

I must live in bubble suburbia. Where I live we can usually still get toilet paper and paper towels. Our local Menards almost always has it. Hand sanitizer is gone. Even though it's gone, along certain roads nail salons sell it and distilleries sell the stuff in two liter containers for about $20.

Yeah that's a very lax requirement for sure. A good portion of the store's footage isn't accessible to customer space.
MOWs is delivering 7 meals a week but usually only two days a week.
My favorite pasta is called Oche de Lupo, or Eye of the Wolf. It's a cross between a ziti noodle and rigatoni. Easy to find in NY, much tougher in Vegas and impossible in Bisbee.
So as I'm walking down the almost empty pasta aisle, I see a bunch of boxes among otherwise empty shelves. Dozens of boxes of Oche de Lupo. Pasta has been selling out and I guess this hasn't been selling so well so the warehouse had this left with everything else sold.

Still no TP or much paper. I'm down to my last roll of paper towels, but have plenty of TP.

Don't know if I'd rely on Google too much based on these answers. Are you in the woods, by any chance?

The options:
Smooth oval rocks (from river beds if possible)
Snowball.
Rounded sticks.
Leaves (as said elsewhere, be careful of which kinds)
soft pine cones (relatively rare, but plentiful where they exist!)

LOL! I drove to pick up takeout today. Duff's chicken wings! Probably 2 miles round trip. Longest drive in last 3 weeks. At this rate I may need to fill up again in September. Tomorrow maybe 5 mile drive to golf course.

Lots of hand sanitizer stations all over the store, and cart wipes. They insisted we use the stylus on the push pad, and they wiped the stylus between customers. They also wiped the belt between customers and had lexan sneeze shields. About 75% of people (including us) wore face masks. We felt reasonably secure.
This is a Wegman’s, major regional chain in the mid Atlantic.

I went to a local supermarket yesterday and it looked like everything was available besides the TP, paper towels, and kleenex. About 20% of the people were wearing masks.

Did you see a sign in store or something? I looked around online a little and could not confirm. The current (pared down) sales ad for Von's/Albertson's ends on Tuesday April 7th. Maybe it is going to be the last one for some time? Their "Just for U" app deals and rewards still look active when I sign in.

Quote: FleaStiffI think I will stick with INSTACART delivery rather than trek to the supermarket. It is cheaper to pay a premium on each item than to pay a ten dollar premium on each taxi ride.
We tried that. It was convenient, but our delivery time was set for 7-8PM, and our shopper started around 6PM. About half our items were not available. I also did not like not being able to choose my own produce.
We absolutely felt that the service was worth it. Perhaps when things get back to normal we will use it more often.

Quote: WizardTurns out toilet paper hoarding goes back to at least 1973.
Direct: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K9-Lz0SbrA
1973/74 saw a severe paper shortage of all sorts. Several magazines and at least one comic company had to switch paper stocks, and Marvel Comics went from charging 15 cents a copy to 30 cents. A number of magazines folded in that era.
Unfortunately, times aren't normal. People are stuck at home. So all the tp demand once met by the bathrooms in office buildings, restaurants, entertainment venues et al is currently shifted to the residential side. Hence, visiting the paper products aisle at the residential supermarket is like shopping in the former Soviet Union.
I'm just going by what the wife told me. She's always looking for sales coupons and special deals on the app, I think it's generally Wednesday when they have the good ones. She used to go out every week during the sales. She was telling me there are no sales any more at Albertson's.Quote: KeeneoneDid you see a sign in store or something? I'm not sure why you would put it in a paper shredder? If you take newspaper and crumple it up a bunch of times I will soften up pretty good. Better yet, just keep running it back and forth over a hard surface corner, that will have the same effect how's crumpling but much quicker. I guess you're thinking... if it's shredded up it won't clog up as easy. I still don't know what's wrong with a wet washcloth to wipe and a dry one to dry. And then just rinse the used one out really well and proceed to throw it in the washer until you're ready to do a load(no pun intended)Quote: jjjooogggIm considering putting newspaper in a paper shredder and see how well it goes as TP. Im certified in plumbing if it clogs.
Wouldn't letting the newspaper sit in the toilet with a little bit of Drano or bleach break it down pretty good before you flushed? If you had a little bit of bleach to the water that's definitely going to help stop any smells one might get from leaving an unflushed toilet.

Ours was fixed, and three days after we ordered; either that or the desireable times were all filled. Regardless, the next time, yesterday morning, we took the trip that I wrote about, yesterday.
Quote: GialmereConcerning toilet paper, I read an article discussing how, although hording is certainly an issue, the big problem is the shift in demand. The tp industry is divided in half between commercial and residential usage. Under normal circumstances the demand for each side is roughly equal.
Unfortunately, times aren't normal. People are struck at home. So all the tp demand once met by the bathrooms in office buildings, restaurants, entertainment venues et al is currently shifted to the residential side. Now that is interesting. I’ve also read that with all the shortages of produce, there is actually fruit rotting in warehouses and fields, for the same reason: most of it goes to restaurants and institutions like school cafeterias. Without the commercial market, growers can’t afford to pay people to pick food that they can’t sell.
Not just TP, but our local barbecue restaurant has a list of about 20 'essentials' they will sell you when you go to pick up food.Quote: GialmereI've heard that some restaurants will sell you a roll or two of their supply when you pick up your take out.

Here in Reno, a restaurant is givig away free packs of TP if you order takeout. Is the food that bad that you need to hit the head immediately after you eat it?
Also so many people going into stores with entire families which is not helping the situation if stores are limiting the number of customers. It should be one per household.
