How is Vera doing?

Vera died a few years back. Her family intentionally did not make a press release about it, she was gone for months before it was noted.
Maybe Joleen is still kicking?

Yes, she is (Celia Watson), and so is Belle (Diane Ladd, who also played Flo in the movie)

Close. Former Miss Arizona.

So she's a former Miss America contestant. I was just guessing, I had no idea.

According to ABC News and her website, she was in the Miss USA pageant, not Miss America.

r.i.p. Robert Redford
from the link -
"Robert Redford, the big-screen charmer turned Oscar-winning director whose hit movies often helped America make sense of itself and who, off screen, evangelized for environmental causes and fostered the Sundance-centered independent film movement, died early Tuesday morning at his home in Utah. He was 89."

The 1970s were Redford's HayDay he didn't really do much acting wise after that. Nothing of any consequence anyway. The Way We Were, The Sting, The Great Gatsby, Butch Cassidy, Jeremiah Johnson, All the President's Men, the Candidate, 3 days of the Condor, The Electric Horseman, these were all in the late '60s and the 70s. I saw every one of them in a movie theater. In the early 80s he made Out of Africa which he was hardly in and The Natural, for which he was way too old. He was almost 50 when he made that. My favorite would have to be Jeremiah Johnson, great movie. He was best in movies where he didn't have to talk very much because he wasn't really that great of an actor.
I first saw Robert Redford in the 1962 episode of The Twilight Zone where he played Mr Death. I think it was his debut. The production company told him decades later that his episode was the most viewed episode of The Twilight Zone out of all of them.
Whenever I hear Blue Öyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", I think of this Twilight Zone episode.

I'm glad he was in some Marvel movies so my kids know who I'm talking about when I mention Robert Redford.

It's a really good movie. It will make sense after the first 20 minutes. The concept is pretty simple actually. You might even think it's cliche today but it followed after Watergate so one of the first government under suspicion movies
BTW it's based on a novel, Six Days of the Condor. The film only tells the first half of the book. They did a 2016 cable series called Condor" which is in two seasons. The first three days for season one. The second for season two. The first three days are one adventure. And the second three are follow up adventure to tie up all the loose ends.

Okay, thanks for the information. 💡 I had no idea that Mr. Goodbar (Eternally Looking For Mr. Goodbar) is a 1977 movie starring Diane Keaton. I only knew of Mr. Goodbar as a candy bar so I had no idea why Darkoz said ,"Eternally Looking For Mr Goodbar," until you linked to Diane Keaton's death. 💡 RIP to Diane Keaton. 😭

It's a disturbing movie, kind of a gross story but based on a true one.

The film is indeed based on a true story and follows her life from her point of view so it doesn't cover the after effects.
The police combed the bars uncovering her double life and linking her to the "friend of the killer" thinking he was the killer.
He admitted to seeing her that night but that it was his friend that had gone off with her. His friend had confessed to him and begged him for a plane ticket to where his parents lived. The guy thought his friend was just slinging BS to scrounge a ticket out of him
So he knew where the guy was and the police nabbed him.
The guy did feel guilty saying it was drug fueled and committed suicide in prison before his trial.

Grumpy Dieter replies that "celebrity" is not exclusively actors, and that while I do not personally care much about notable public figures shuffling off this mortal coil, the larger society I exist within often does, and my awareness of what they care about may contribute to my better socialization.
In other words, I'm just nerdy enough that actively working a little to fit in helps. Awareness of celebrity deaths can make a useful point of "small talk", if you need or want that for an "act".
"Nobody" seemed to notice when the guy who (formerly) worked two offices over from me died two years ago, but I'm sure at least a handful of people here played with him at WSOP.

I did, but then again his research was and is important to my line of work.
It's important because these are people the public are interested in.
Thankfully, the backlash to that particular clothing trend had the opposite effect, as Jordache and Calvin Klein introduced form-fitting jeans to the universe.

Hah, raises hand.
I now carefully check if the death is posted in breaking news. I still see news items pop-up in which already dead people appear to have died again. Now if it ever says, “What’s-his-face dies for second time” I’m posting that.
I'm thinking I should send condolences to Jimmy's wife so I go online to see when he died.
I find an article entitled "Hero Cop dead at 55", and think something's not right. He's older than me. Then I see the article was written in 2016. It turned out my friend who was at the funeral died from COVID, back in the spring of 2020. Some trips down the rabbit hole don't end up being much fun.
