Quote: GWAEStumbled on this site last night from Facebook. There is a video of the strip in 1975. It is fascinating and surprisingly good quality. My first visit was in 2000 so amazing the difference in 25 years and now 20 years after that.

That is so cool, thanks for posting. Wouldn't it be great if you could really go back in a time machine?
Of course, the original The Gambler was made in 1974, so there's some good scenes in that. James Caan doubling on 18 and spiking a 3. Single deck, and dealer peaks, no peaking thing. Dealer tells.
Good post!
Looking at that makes me think the early 90's was some of the best times to be in Vegas. Things were pretty built out and great values were everywhere. Maybe Vegas jumped the shark when they built the Canopy over Fremont.Quote: GWAEStumbled on this site last night from Facebook. There is a video of the strip in 1975. If you are on Facebook. You can like their page and they put up a few pics a day. Most of them are worth looking at imo
25 cent crap games as well as an equally staggering minimum bet for 21.

True. But that little billionaire gives me the creeps. He will only eat meat that he personally kills. What a freak.

Oh my the video called "Koyaanisqatsi (1982)" is so scary although only like 20 seconds. Its just 6 women standing looking at the camera with vegas in the background

Quote: PokerGrinderCool video, why did the strip have 37 gas stations lol?
Because as much as Vegas is in the middle of nowhere now, it was REALLY in the middle of nowhere back then...!

Maybe it was a good way to generate cash flow on real estate investments at the time.

I like reading what was written on them.

probably because cars got 8 miles a gallon and had 6 gallon tanks. (Making up both numbers but I bet its not far off)
Didn't they all get turned into Denny's?Quote: DRichI didn't realize there was a Sambo's on the strip.

I went to what I believe is the first and last Sambo's in Santa Barbara a few years ago.

Today's Kismet (highlight my own):
Quote: The Ocala KitchenSambo’s was a restaurant started in 1957 by Sam Battistone, Sr. and Newell Bohnett. who commonly were referred to as Sam and Bo. Though the name was taken from portions of the names of its founders, the chain soon found itself associated with The Story of Little Black Sambo. Battistone, Sr. and Bohnett capitalized on the coincidence by decorating the walls of the restaurants with scenes from the book, including a dark-skinned boy, tigers, and a pale, magical unicycle-riding man called "The Treefriend."
Treefriend err...Wizard has a Santa Barbara connection too...
At night, however, all the Vegasy motel signs turned on and accentuated the glitz of of the big casino Marquees. I suppose it's all those old school flashing lights I really miss. Today it's mostly jumbotrons and light tubes. Pretty cool, but yesteryear had the ultimate eye candy.

I didn't film it.
It was transferred from an old 8mm film reel I found in an antique store years ago.
There's also footage of Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon, but this was the only Vegas stuff.

It's surprisingly well done. The camera is rock solid in a moving vehicle, and the exposure at night is excellent. I wonder if it is a commercially produced souvenir reel? Are there shots of people posing in front of signs and other such common tourist activities in the other footage?
