Over at the LV Advice forum, they recently added a function to simplify posting photos. Here’s the discussion: http://lvadvice.com/forum/index.php?topic=8050.0

It’s pretty cool.

It provides a link to a third party service that will upload and host the photos, as well as insert the BB code into the forum post text box, where it can then be moved within the post if desired.

Can we get that service here?

While we’re at it, and particularly if we use this service, can WoV be modified to allow using standard BB code for image links?

Thanks

I got a PM that indicated that the above link wouldn’t work unless you’re an opgraded member at LVAdvice.

So here’s some of the key info from that post.

Quote: LVAdvice

No changes have been made to the existing methods of adding images to your posts. You may continue to add images as you always have, if you like.

The new, blue link at the bottom of the posting box (including the QuickReply box) should pop open an upload window and prompt you to select an image from your computer to add to your post. It will then automatically insert the necessary code into the text box to make your image display. The reason for this added feature is to make it easier to add photos to posts for some folks who aren't comfortable jumping through hoops to upload and post images. Since the images are hosted externally, it's great for the site as it doesn't take up my disk space.

Images are hosted by postimage.org / postimg.cc, and in theory will be hosted there forever. Note, there is not a mechanism to remove images uploaded to their site, so don't upload something you may want removed from the internet later.

Rather than repeat myself ... Old thread bump.

For what it's worth, I frequently go to LVAdvice and use their function to upload a photo, then take the code back here to include the photo in a WoV post - without ever posting the photo at LVAdvice.

So I again ask, can't WoV get this service (or one like it)?

Also note that the url that comes back makes the photo a link to the service. I tend to remove that part when converting the IMG tags to the WoV version. FYI: A direct link to postimg.cc allows uploads and returns 8 different formats of links for the photo. (I continue to go thru LVA for this since I can't remember which of the 8 formats is best.)

They have links that provide the code necessary to include their service. Also, their About page indicates that the service was specifically created to give message boards an easy way to upload photos - for free.

Of course, I gotta also ask that WoV, and DT, get modified to allow standard IMG tags, even if this service isn't implemented.

Thanks

And example of my using their photo service thru LVA then posting it here, is the photo in this post:

How about DT?
Is there an idiot's guide to posting photos
If I post a photo on FB, is there any way to use that post to somehow show a photo here?

Posting photos should be so easy a caveman can do it. I easily post photos on FB. They make it so easy. Not easy here.
When somebody doesn't believe me, I could care less. Some get totally bent out of shape when not believed. Weird. I believe very little on all forums

Question for Wizard... Is this forum built upon a modification of a common platform such as PHPBB or similar or was it built from the ground up?

Woo hoo! 😁

Frankly, I thought it would never happen because of the BB code IMG tag differences. But, woo hoo! 👍

Hi all,

now we have an option to upload the image from WoV.

You can use "Insert my picture" button for those purposes :)

Wonderful!!! This might be the needed solution to one of the major difficulties in the Casino Chip of the Day thread! At my last count, there were 118 chip-of-the-day images that have disappeared because they had been stored at Photobucket or one of the other services that started charging to host photos and subsequently blocked access to the photos from folks who didn't agree to pay the fee.

One very important factor related to that possible use of this new forum feature: On the (somewhat risky) assumption that members still have their original images of these chips (or could shoot new ones), is there (or will there be) a way for a poster to edit a very old post and replace a now-obscured-photo link with a new "Insert my picture" image? That would be great, and if that is the case, I will send PMs to the people who suffered that photo loss and let them know which of their chip-of-the-day posts need to be revised.

Thanks in advance!

Is there a size limit, either in pixels or MB? This is 800 x 600; it rejected a much larger one.

And note that the error message I got spelled "unsuccessful" with two Ls

The picture that got rejected was about 2.3 MB. I was able to load one that's 1.5 MB.

Also, there's no easy way to add/change a photo to an existing post. What you can do is, you can create a new post, upload photos, cancel the new post, and manually insert an [IMG] tag to the one where you actually want to add/change the photo.

Thanks for the info. I guess that makes two tiers of impediment for correcting each of the 118 missing images in the Casino-Chip-of-the-Day thread. Not only is it a multi-step process (as ThatDonGuy described) to get a replacement image inserted in an old post that's being edited, but also most folks nowadays don't have the ability to edit their old posts in the first place.

Anybody have suggestions as to how we could get that thread's lost-image posts fixed if we actually had the 118 images available to post?

If you can't edit the original posts, then how about creating a separate thread for the now-missing images and posting the new photos there?

I can edit my own old posts, but just in that one thread -- that permission allows me to manage the thread index that is located in the first three posts of the thread. If others can edit their old posts in that thread, I am not aware of it, and I cannot edit anyone else's posts anywhere -- I think that requires an Admin.

I was interested in getting replacement photos edited into the original posts so that the images appear right along with the discussion about the chip and the casino it came from. I feel that moving the images to another thread would diminish the value, unless perhaps we could add a note in the original post about where the image was now available. That sounds almost as difficult as adding the replacement image where I think it should go.

{Side comment: I didn't really mean to take this thread off its intended topic.}

I think it’s a date thing. I.E. All posts created prior to the rule about no edits are still editable. Additionally, I checked. I can edit my own posts, in ANY thread, as long as they’re old enough.

I don’t know what the cutoff date is.

FYI. All 3 of your index posts are dated 2/27/2010 but obviously weren’t created the same day, and are before the cutoff.

Test by trying to edit a post that’s a couple days old as well as one that’s at least 10 years old. And not in that thread.

Uhmmm? On my screen, it says that the first three posts in the Casino-Chip-of-the-Day thread are dated March 16, 2012, not February 27, 2010. Are we looking at the same thread? I think the original three posts were probably created the same day, but they have been modified (with some of the original stuff moved to later posts) in order to make room for the index.

I did look at another thread with a very old post of mine (2010) and can verify that I can still edit it, so you are correct there.

Specifically about the CCotD thread, my "special permission" will allow me to edit a post from last December in that thread, should I choose to, though I cannot do that in other threads. That ability allows me to edit a post in the right place in the thread to draw attention to related chip posts that were made elsewhere or at a later date.

I really appreciate that feature, Wiz. Perhaps you can clear up my uncertainty -- Can other members edit their own posts in that thread as I can for mine, such as they might post a link to a new chip image and replace an image that is now obscured by Photobucket? If not, do you have a suggestion as to how we might fix those obscured images if replacements are (or become) available?

Thank you very much! This may well provide the avenue to get the thread repaired (a need that combined with a pandemic to annoy the heck out of me for the past year or so.)

I will soon type up the list of missing chip images (have it handwritten now) and start passing it on via PM to folks who have lost quite a few from their posts. I'm hoping that many of those chip-posters still have saved image files or could shoot new ones and would be willing to go to the trouble to edit their posts to replace the images. I felt we had a good thread going for a long time, and then we lost a bunch of photos that were a significant element of the thread.

I was just about to post the same image, with the same question, here.

Anyway, at least on my computer, it doesn't seem to come up with an image wider than 780 pixels. Even when I select "Copy Image Location" and then paste the URL into a new browser tab, the image that comes up has width 780.

I used to post a lot of photos
Not anymore
This forum has really gone downhill
Liars are protected
Members no longer allowed to truthfully confront the liars
Why is that LIAR Mdawg protected
His whole thread is a total lie
His fan club are all liars and trolls.
All mdawg sock puppets.
His whole liar life is this board.
He actually needs help
Talk about a board addict.
Yet
The admins protect the liars and trolls and constantly suspend members that add real content to the discussions.
This place has become a cesspool of liars and trolls and admins here actively protect the liars and trolls.
I posted a ton of interesting pics here
Not any more
No way will I post more pics in this cesspool of a forum.
Go ahead and suspend
Its meaningless
I'm not addicted to this board like that LIAR mdawg and his lieing minions
Have not posted here in a week.
Suspensions are meaningless
When somebody doesn't believe me, I could care less. Some get totally bent out of shape when not believed. Weird. I believe very little on all forums
