Sorry about blowing this play. ;-)
Recently I laughed to see that Eric Estrada, he of CHPs fame, has a traveling "quiz show" that was featured at Chinook Winds tribal casino.
I guess when you cannot sing, dance or act then all that's left is hosting idiotic game shows.
Oh well, at least he's not out there holding up a cardboard sign reading "will act for food."

I just checked the events calendar for one of my local casinos.... you ain't lyin'...
Three Dog Night, Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Tom Jones, Culture Club, B-52's, etc...

I think they have, or are going to cancel that show. I assume this is the show where they tell stories and answer questions from the audience.

To be fair, half of those groups were popular like 46 years ago. The singers are in their 70's now. Even a baby that was born when they were popular would be old enough to be a parent of a 26 year old adult to put things into perspective. And maybe have grandchildren of their own. The other half were popular like 36 years ago.

Not that it is any of my business but why are you playing the lottery when you live in poverty?
Quote: GWAENot that it is any of my business but why are you playing the lottery when you live in poverty?
This made me recall a memory from my past. The state just opened riverboat gambling and I didn't know a thing. I'm pretty sure I was 20 years old playing with a pass back id. I went to the casino for the first time ever after my shift waiting tables. If I had $80 in my pocket I would be surprised. Anyway, I ended up winning... I saw a three reel top symbol line up playing a single quarter and I hit some kind of a side bet on a table game. I'm guessing I was up ~$300...
None of that is important I guess because I spent it all on lap dances.
Anyway, my point is everyone has to start somewhere.

I just saw your question literally a minute ago. ;) I am not "living under a bridge poor." ;) I have a stable job, a roof above my head, bank accounts, get my hair done, good indoor plumbing, food, good clothes, buy toiletries, have a cellphone, pay my Utilities bill. :) I make roughly $1,000 a month and I play like $100 in gambling every month :) $50 in Lottery and $50 in Casino.
Dumb, poor, downtrodden, mathematically challenged, diminished hope... whatever it is the tax is real and self paid.Quote: billryanI thought it was a tax on the dumb.
Saw one guy at the supermarket recently. Had a flip folder full of see through plastic compartments. Each one for a separate lottery game. Had atleast six separate games going but those were merely the compartments I was able to count. He had several compartments that I could not see or did not recognize. Every one was stuffed with multiple tickets and he had lists of multiple numbers that he played.
His hobby? Or his entire pension going to the lottery? I don't know. He was cheerful and did not appear to be hungry or homeless. he was dressed in clothes typical for a Florida morning and he had a set of keys with him so he had a vehicle.

Unless you have another source of income not mentioned, or cash saved from some previous adventure, I'm going with GWAE on this one. $1000 a month doesn't leave much after paying for rent, food, clothes, cell phone......

I think I could make things work on $1k/month in my current living situation, which includes owning a car and owning a decent house in a decent neighborhood. An unexpected car or house repair would throw a bit of a wrench in things though.
That would only work because I split the bills in half with my GF who lives with me. So maybe Nathan has a significant other to help offset her living expenses?

The 50% return on state lotteries isn’t so egregious when you consider how little action most players put in compared to casino games.
With a game of blackjack players are wagering $5-$25+ every minute or two.
I would say the average regular lottery player spends $20-$30 per week. Although some certainly play far more than that.

I am not going to chastise you for spending $100 a month on lottery and penny slots. If it makes you happy then go for it.
Do they have bonus banking machines in the casinos near you? Do you know what I'm talking about? You have been on this forum long enough and you must see people talking about Advantage Play and machine vulturing.
I have yet to ever see you ask anything about that stuff.
If they do, you should seriously learn how to take advantage of them. As much time as you seem to spend going to the casinos, perhaps you could be adding a few hundred a week to your income for very little risk. If you are conservative and pick your spots well you should not need much more than $300 to get started.
There should be some little promotions from time to time that are +EV and don't require much risk.
While I'm not advocating this for anyone because it's not good for everyone and people may have friends and family. Or a gambling problem.
But if it were me, I would learn as much as I could about bonus banking/ accumulators, build up a little bankroll then transfer from my job to a location where there were lots of bonus machines. There's no reason you couldn't at least triple your income.
Again, it's not for everyone and I'm not advocating anyone do it, its just somthing to think about.
I only get haircuts if I win at the casino. Rather than getting pedicures twice a year you can simply kick your toenails into the curb until they break off and put the pedicure money into your gambling fund. It is kind of a bad policy, even worse when people aren't allowed to even check their bags. Now I see that many take backpacks as their only luggage flying, it's turning away good customers that at least could afford a few hundred just to fly. Don't know the casino motivation, whether just for safety or game protection from cheaters, etc.Quote: NathanGod damn it, I hate this rule of "no bags," allowed in my local casino. (I put it under an outside bench ), hoping that no one would steal it. I played some slots. When I came to the bench, lo and behold, it was GONE. I hoped nearby valet had it/had given it to security. The valet admitted they weren't paying attention to that bench. Crap. I asked security, hoping maybe a janitor had picked it up and turned it in. No, nobody turned it in. If I had any really good sense at the time I would have hidden it in a nearby bush and then collect it when I was done playing. Silly me for putting it under a bench. The next time, I decided to bring a small bag with me with a new umbrella and some candy to see if that would fly. It did. A small bag is fine but not a huge bag.

That arrangement sounds very favorable to 2 of the 3 people. I guess living expenses are different everywhere , but my rent is about 10x the amount of my cable bill and 15x my utility bill. I’m assuming the guy paying the rent has a much bigger bedroom or something ?

The guy paying the rent is his HOUSE! :) He is a a doctor's assistant. The one paying the cable bill pays way less because he is the college kid brother of the one who rents his house. He works at McDonald's as a burger flipper and we know he doesn't have much money.

Not a terrible deal for him either as long as he likes you guys. He gets to put equity in the house while someone else covers the utilities.

Quote: NathanPlaying advance lottery slips is a must. :) I had a good feeling that 46 front pair in Pick 4 was coming up soon so I played 46 front pair at .50 for both drawings for 14 days for $14 dollars over a week ago. Yesterday, 4680 showed up and I got my $25. :) And I still have 5 days left for 46 to show up. I've seen "Do it again numbers" come up consecutively. For example, I saw a number like 8500 come up on the evening. And the midday number was 8500. A person who had done 2 weeks in advance would have won $400 in just two drawings. And that's not to count the possibility of a ANOTHER 8500 showing up again within the 2 weeks. I am talking about box in this scenario which means anyway it comes you get paid. For example, if 0580 shows up you still get paid. :) I have seen 750 cash 3 show up three times in just one week! So let's say you have 8500 box and it comes up three times in one week like 8500, 8500, and 0580 you just won $600 in just one week! Not bad on a $14 gamble! :D That's not even to say if 8500 comes up once next week. $800 in two weeks on just $14! :D And if you had it 8500 at straight and it comes up three times in that 2 weeks, you just won $7500 before taxes on just a $14 investment! Or over 535 times your investment before taxes! :D With taxes taken out at 33 percent you still get over $5000 for you. :D On a $14 investment. :D So, advance plays are a must. :)
Post that on lotterypost.com and people will believe you. There are threads where people describe their spreadsheets that predict pick 3 and pick 4 numbers (and PB too though that one is harder because there are a lot more numbers from which to choose).
Every so often I go over there and try to teach people a lesson about expected value, and it always goes the same way... BUT MY SYSTEM WORKS!
Quote: RSYes. I’ve never done it, but have been involved in situations where someone bought off someone else’s debt. Of course, it’s at a discount and the people involved basically “make a new deal”. If Alpha owed Beta $1,000 and Beta doesn’t thing Alpha will pay, or will take a long time to pay, he could sell it to Charlie for whatever they agree upon. If the person is very likely to pay, then he might sell for an amount very close to the $1,000. If it’s some dude who you’re almost certain isn’t going to pay, then he might sell it for much less.
If I’m not mistaken, collections companies do the same thing. If you don’t pay something like a medical bill within X time, it gets sold to a collections company and they have to collect from you. That actually happened to me, with an online course I took. Long story short, I had a s*** professor who messed everything up by scheduling my final presentation on a date that she used from the previous year’s calendar, she rescheduled everything except mine, and wasn’t made aware of the mixup until afterwards (and I got like a 40% in the class because the final counted for like 50% of the grade). I told them I wasn’t going to pay for that course because it was setup in a way where I literally could not have passed it. They still tried to charge me. Like 2 years later I was getting calls from a collections company for an amount less than what that course cost. I told them it was BS, they said they don’t care and start threatening me with some nonsense. So I gave them my credit card, waited a few days, then did a charge back and marked it as fraud. I got reimbursed and a new credit card.
Dealing with debt collectors is very easy. Send them a letter (certified mail, return receipt requested, or they'll say they "lost" it) that says pursuant to the Federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, I hereby insist that you CEASE AND DESIST all future communication with me.
It works every time. I had a terrible financial crisis 10 years ago, with quite a few debt collectors calling me every day, and when I found out about this law, I wrote them and never heard from them again. They take it seriously because the civil punishment is $1,000 per violation (that's per phone call, per letter sent, after you get the return receipt back).
The only communication they are allowed after getting a C&D letter is to let you know that they are going to sue you, and they must follow through or that letter will cost them $1,000. It's rare they sue people because that costs money, and it's hard to squeeze blood out of a turnip, so they just write it off. The biggest single bill I had was $20,000, and they didn't sue me over that one.
Fraud means someone else used your card without your permission. You did use your own card and then falsely claimed it was fraud. Okay, so the "victim" here is just a scummy debt collector, but the best thing to do is send that C&D letter.
A less costly way to do this is would be to have a $1 scratcher with a minimum prize of $500. This game doesn't exist, because no one wants to play a game where the probability of winning something is tiny. It needs to be about 1 in 4 or people won't play. The advantage to the state then becomes even larger. For example, if you buy 20 of those, exchange $10 of winners, exchange $2 again, and one loses and one wins $500, that's great, but you've gone through 20+10+2=32 tickets, which is $16 for the state. The better game would be buy 20 of those and nothing else, which is only $10 for the state (same reason why the casino hold on table games is far more than the house edge for each hand played, since you re-bet the same chips over and over).
Quote: billryanWhy do you make $1,000 a month? Sounds like a pretty dead one job. Ever think about using the time spent here to advance your education and career?
Actually, according to my finance report for last year, I actually made like $19,000, not $12,000. My take home pay is like $12,000 a year but my gross is roughly $800 every two weeks. If I were paid under the table and every single cent I earned went to me I would be making roughly $1600 every month. But I am paying federal taxes, FICA, health insurance, dental insurance, eye vision, my 401K, 2 separate loans,my stock plan, so all of that combined takes roughly $300 of my gross leaving me with roughly $500 every month.
I remember the first Texas scratch ticket. It was the Summer of 1992 and I was not old enough yet (by a month or so) to buy tickets. Still bought/got tickets (one way or another) and played. I do not recall winning anything of significance.Quote: KevinAABack to gambling... when I was 18 I worked at a convenience store and Texas had just created the state lottery. They had just one game, a $1 scratcher. With one exception in the six months I worked there, every single person who redeemed a winning ticket wanted more tickets instead of cash. In other words, they're trying to win a large prize ($500 to the top prize of $25,000).
