The last lock I got here was on Romney to beat Obama.
It's not whether you win or lose; it's whether or not you had a good bet.

Bridge jumpers make 10% in West Virginia racing. Minimum payout $2.20. Double the profit. I've thought about it. Didn't do it.

A bridge jumper is a person who plunges on an overwhelmingly strong favorite usually in a small field usually betting to show but sometimes to place and are willing to accept a very small profit, usually 5%. They bet with the idea that their horse is a sure thing to finish 3rd or better. There are a few bridge jumpers who will bet as much as 100K and I have personally seen this done at a small harness track, Rosecroft. They are called bridge jumpers because if their horse is out of the money they have lost a great amount in pursuit of a relatively small profit and some go looking or thinking about a bridge to jump off of. Track regulations require a minimum payout of 5% profit even if this causes the track to lose money which it frequently does in these situations. When this happens the show pool is called a minus pool. Don't feel too sorry for the tracks though. On the days when the bridge jumpers lose the tracks realize a windfall as do all the other bettors who bet on other horses who showed.
