Bridge jumpers make 10% in West Virginia racing. Minimum payout $2.20. Double the profit. I've thought about it. Didn't do it.
Quote: GWAEcan someone enlighten me to what the hell a bridge jumper is in horse racing?
A bridge jumper is a person who plunges on an overwhelmingly strong favorite usually in a small field usually betting to show but sometimes to place and are willing to accept a very small profit, usually 5%. They bet with the idea that their horse is a sure thing to finish 3rd or better. There are a few bridge jumpers who will bet as much as 100K and I have personally seen this done at a small harness track, Rosecroft. They are called bridge jumpers because if their horse is out of the money they have lost a great amount in pursuit of a relatively small profit and some go looking or thinking about a bridge to jump off of. Track regulations require a minimum payout of 5% profit even if this causes the track to lose money which it frequently does in these situations. When this happens the show pool is called a minus pool. Don't feel too sorry for the tracks though. On the days when the bridge jumpers lose the tracks realize a windfall as do all the other bettors who bet on other horses who showed.
Ask Max pen what a bridge jumper is after the election.Quote: GWAEcan someone enlighten me to what the hell a bridge jumper is in horse racing?

No good bridges in LV you will have to settle for the Stratosphere.Quote: WizardOr Mike after a Super Bowl safety.
Fortunately I missed them bad years. But you may need to make room if it happens again.

That's what I meant. I'm still not sure what to call it. The Mike O'Callaghan -- Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is quite a mouthful.

Ah, sorry for that then. Sounded like you meant just the dam. I would just call it the Tillman Bridge. Bridge names that are too long get shortened when everyone knows what they are talking about. You can trust me on that. They renamed 3 here and I still use the old names.

I like the Stratosphere idea. But I think you should exit from one of the rides in a dramatic fashion.
Wiggle out of the restraints. Tip your top hat, and wave your cane and step into the great beyond.
The rest of the riders will be telling the story for a long time.
Quote: DRichHow big of a favorite does it have to be to be classified a bridge jumper? I would say around 15:1 favorite.
I think the no safety qualifies and that is around 8 to 1.
Florida bred horses are usually rats.... they usually can not race with other horses outside of Florida. And you would NEVER expect a Florida bred three year old filly to race aged mares in a stakes race.... this one did in Lexington last month and as the only three year old in the race she won easily for her first start for the new owners and trainer.
here is the race where she beat up on the best aged mares in North America at THE RED MILE

I'm all for thinking outside the box but in this case it's Wizard of Vegas and gambling so you must keep in spirit with that theme IMO. The Stratosphere IS the correct choice.Quote: rxwineI like the Stratosphere idea. But I think you should exit from one of the rides in a dramatic fashion.

I'm not trying to take you off your bet if you like it. Good Luck. I've thought about these types of bets too. To break even with these types of bets you would have to win 20 out of 21. I've thought about it and I don't know how anyone could estimate the probability of a win rate that high. How can a person estimate the possibility that the horse could break stride or have an incident or a hidden injury? I really don't know and I don't think anyone can know this. Secretariat lost a race and shortly after the race it was discovered that he had an abscessed tooth. Also, if you were determined to do this why not look for a horse in West Virginia where the profit is double and you would only have to risk half as much to make the same amount? But again, it's your bet, not mine. Again, I wish you good luck.
A valuable lesson learned.

I think the key to becoming a bridge jumper is not the odds but the fact that you bet big. Really big. Big enough that it's going to hurt really bad if you lose. Because that horse (or non safety allowing football team) owes you money. That money is yours right after you bet it; before the outcome. There is no risk. Because after all; you're you.
I tried to bet on the race but my online place did not have this track on. Sorry.Quote: coilmanOnly a hour left to get your money down..... weather is NOT going to play a part in the outcome nice fast track tonight

I'd build a guillotine. Think that's quick, relatively painless. Really see no downside. You have to be crazy and stupid to jump from a bridge if the thought of your coconut exploding sounds good.
One of most painless I ever heard of was my dad worked in mill where a guy jumped into the molten steel. Talk about fast way to go.

About freezing to death, it is interesting to note that before you die you feel hot. That is why in cases of death by freezing on places like Mount Everest you see the bodies nearly naked with cast off clothing all around.
When I nearly died from food poising, with a temperature of 105, I felt dreadfully cold. Strange.
As for the guillotine, your head might remain conscious for up to a minute after being decapitated. I would prefer a firing squad to that.
You guys got to think of something more delightful. Like hitting the mega bucks jackpot and got a heart attack. At least you die laughing.(And you wife laughing too)Quote: WizardAbout freezing to death, it is interesting to note that before you die you feel hot. Why can't you people post threads either without JARGON or EXPLAIN the JARGON in the INITIAL POST.
Did Vegas have a line on this?
Note: As to manner of death..don't worry... we all go the way we most fear!
Bridge jumper... I thought you were referring to Base Jumpers.

No easy money there that I saw? If you think a horse like that, with no obvious class edge is a 1/20 shot to place, you are mistaken. And a harness race no less. Long time ago I had a friend Harry Commarata, AKA Hot Horse Harry, who was the security guard at Laurel Raceway. In harness races at that time, owners, trainers, etc. could not leave the paddock until the horses were on the move. Harry would sometimes open the gate, then race to the window about 40 feet away to place a bet for himself or an owner.
One night there was a 1/9 shot that looked unbeatable. Talked to Harry about betting an exacta with a longshot second. Harry whispered " Don't do it " I said WTF or something like that. Harry said the wheel might fall off in the backstretch second time around. Damn'd if it didn't.
I've resolved that once a year I must say "Buzzard is right." It's late enough this year that I'm starting to feel a chill in the air, but now I get to check that box for 2016.Quote: FDEAD3709bzzzzzzz
In my opinion, trotters (harness "racing") is pretty much the b*strd child of an illicit tryst in a port-a-potty between jai-alai, dog racing, and cock fighting. Reasons for me to ever bet on it: If I'm I'm rock-solid dead-sure that I'm in on the fix, and it is Buzzard's money I'm playing with. Similar to thoroughbred "racing" in Manila, only much more so. For a while living in Manila I was occasionally let in on the fix by some local friends. Trotters at Pompano? I'm not in on the fix, and not gonna be. This is all good, because I know that I'm not. Just IMO, FWIW, etc.
Fans of harness racing as a sport are welcome to feel otherwise; both of them, worldwide. I see the betting handle at what I think pass for 'major' harness tracks is generally < $50k/race, which might almost come close to the sum of parking fees but probably not cash hotdog sales at actual racetracks, with the wagering liquidity provided by their eight to ten-million dollar daily handles at Belmont, Santa Anita, etc. The liquidity of a betting market can matter a lot for the potential of a lot of different scams. But if y'all actually do enjoy it, by all means, have at it. If that's not really what's going on with that for ya, remember it is best to leave the food stamp card at home when the month is so young. Still just IMO, yadda, yadda.
