I came to Disney World on Monday, and was at the airport Friday to return home, when United cancelled the flight. I hope to get home Tuesday.
The topic of discussion between my wife and me has been, getting stuck here has gotta be cheaper than Vegas. I'm not so sure.
What do you think?
Naw...there's lots more to do there than at my house. Go to SeaWorld, meet the penguins and polar bears (also the otters and seals are fun, not to mention the dolphins, whales, and stingray pools). There are a dozen fun dinner theaters. Car rentals are cheap; drive out to Kennedy for the day Monday, then get on the Victory Casino boat for Monday night.
Hope you make it home by Tues, and find you still have one.
Doesn't sound very pretty up there.
Quote: WizardofnothingI am traveling for three weeks on vacation and one leg of our trip required flying into nyc but flight were cancelled and I just got clipped for 1500 to drop the rental car off in nyc instead of Florida since all flights were cancelled and we could not get on the flight to nyc- everyone made a fuss but straight up 95 and not an ounce of snow or traffic
That must've been a serious schedule issue for you to do that. Ugh.
Quote: WizardofnothingYou might not be an ap if you think Orlando is cheaper then Vegas
Orlando has 10x the free or cheap things to do that Vegas does. And there are huge coupons everywhere for the more expensive attractions. Plus the beach and nice weather. Food is much much cheaper here as well.
a gambler than Vegas. Why do you
even need to ask.
Orlando has a beach now? Damn, I need to get out more often ;-)Quote: beachbumbabsOrlando has 10x the free or cheap things to do that Vegas does. And there are huge coupons everywhere for the more expensive attractions. Plus the beach and nice weather. Food is much much cheaper here as well.

A beach 45 minutes from the airport (and one of the best in the world, at that) qualifies in my book. Not yours?

If I'm on vacation a beach that is an hour and a half round trip is not an attraction for me.

Fair enough, but where can you fly for a beach vacation and be on the beach in 45 minutes? I can't think of many. Maybe Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.
is boring and hot and sandy, three of my
least fave things. I like food and gambling,
all within a 5min (or less) walk from my room.

Most of my vacations are beach vacations and it is rare that the beach is more than 20 minutes from the airport.
I'm not a big fan of FL beaches. However I love places like thisQuote: EvenBobI don't get the appeal of a beach. A beach

But Orlando / beach is not a poll option.
Walt Disney World has expensive hotels, food and park admission. But at least it can be budgeted. Casino gambling? Not so much...
I was just messin widja BABBs, Cocoa Beach is one of the best in FL. Daily sailings on the Victory as well, 3:2 H17, $5-$500, Split to 4, DAS, No RSA, NS, if I remember correctly. Maybe not great, but not bad either ( if you got to be somewhere where your kids can play on the damn beach all day ;-)Quote: beachbumbabsA beach 45 minutes from the airport (and one of the best in the world, at that) qualifies in my book. Not to mention that I am newly involved in a boat (yacht) dealership that is based in Florida. Still trying to figure the whole deal out but if you want the absolute top of the line finest Italian designed craft(s) on the market and are willing to pay 150% the price of the next step down in class, PM me. I got you covered ;-)Quote: TwoFeathersATLI was just messin widja BABBs, Cocoa Beach is one of the best in FL. I go there every year and always stop for a drink at the bar on that beach. They actually put up the flight schedules so you can anticipate the 747's coming in.

I just bought over three days worth of food for under $40. At so many of the major hotels you can buy two meals for around $10. No matter how nice the beach is, the time and cash spent on transportation is definitely a cost.
Again, no matter where you are the cost will be the same and will come down to whatever your values are. If someone likes spending money, they can spend a lot at either place. If someone doesn't want to spend much money, they can do so and be fine at either place. And whether it's a good time or a bad time being stuck anywhere will always come down to what you make of it.
Number 3: Maybe Myrtle Beach, South Carolina?
Quote: DMSCRHa ha. You DON'T want to be stuck in Vegas. Vegas is only fun is when you want to be there.
But that's true of anywhere on earth. Nobody
ever says 'I hate being here but I sure am having
a good time.' In Vegas it's nothing but options.
You can stay DT for $38 a night and spend $15
a day on food, and go up from there.
Now, if I had a car and was 'stuck' in Orlando, I could find some decent hotels for under $50, cheap food, and take a tour of all the mini-golf courses set on a 'mountain' with Ty-D-Bowl blue waterfalls that the area has to offer (there are several, actually)!
The planes parting your hair on the beach didn't impress me...but I like this sign. Did search, is or was real. I have not been to St Martin, damn if I know how I missed it.Quote: VladsGiantsThat beach bar has other perks as well:

There was a few topless women at the bar this year when we went. I don't know if they still do it, but they used to have hermit crab races that you could bet on.

I dont like this beach. I feel like it's not a real beach if you have to wear sneakers.
I wasn't interested in dodging the crabs, ones trained to race just scare me more. I have been to some, cough, interesting beaches once or twice before. None lately, cough, cough. The wife does like to travel though. Might be +EV if I could drink about half the wife's drinks while no one was watching. Well, not watching me anyway....Quote: DRichQuote: TwoFeathersATLThe planes parting your hair on the beach didn't impress me...but I like this sign. Did search, is or was real. If by interesting beaches you mean nude beaches, Orient Beach in St Martin may be for you. I stay at Orient Bay every year but I have not yet got up the nerve to go over to the nudist area. The beach and area are wonderful but the nude area is just one small part on the very southern part of the beach. If you are interested Google Club Orient in St Martin.
You tempted me, I 'safari'd', scanned images briefly. Nice looking beach. Didn't try videos, only got so many hours in the day to stare at boobs and butts on the screen. You can't touch them, if you try it's just a cold hard glass screen....;-)Quote: DRichIf by interesting beaches you mean nude beaches, Orient Beach in St Martin may be for you. <edit> Just decided that I am looking forward to the next 'quantum leap' in computer screens....
<2nd edit> another quick Safari shows 3 casinos on St Martin, who's got info on the tables?
But does BABBs get to drink at the bar free when she's there? ;-)Quote: beachbumbabsPlayalinda beach just north of Canaveral AFB has a nude beach section. It's relatively remote, but I'm sure you can find it. :)

Following up on this - does anybody have any info on table games in St. Maarten? Specifically blackjack at Casino Royale. Going to St. Maarten in a couple of weeks and wondering in it's worth visiting the casino.
