I'd say E. Parry Thomas, the ultimate "Man Behind The Curtain."
Quote: MrVAs a fan of Las Vegas history and development, I sometimes ask myself who was most instrumental in the development of Las Vegas and its gambling casinos and culture?

Then you should have voted. It is your poll.
Really it is different people in different eras. Modern era no question it is Steve Wynn, Vegas had a has-been image when he broke ground for Mirage.

I'm a big fan of the D but come on, how can you list Stevens ahead of Wynn or Adelson?

The poll is specifically about "Las Vegas", isn't it?
OK, I must admit that Wynn did once own a casino in Las Vegas, though I don't think Adelson ever has. Unlike Stevens & Wynn, Mr. A spent his time way outside town in Paradise.

The key word in the original post is "development."
Jimmy Hoffa gets the vote followed by Steve Wynn.
Billy Wilkerson was already building an upscale casino and hotel when Bugsy Siegel maneuvered himself in place and took it over,
Hughes bought casinos but never built any. Frank Rosenthal ran casinos but never built anything either.
Quote: mcallister3200Might be more appropriate to use the term blame than credit me thinks. Tough call, good suggestions so far.
The more money lost, the more the people have to rationalize it as something good.
The winners know (and don't mind telling) what the score is.

Lol, the AP's shoot real blanks.

I knew some guy too smart for his own good would post this objection. Come on!!!

The casinos love the smart ones.

But they love the stupid ones 1000x better!

This is exactly what they want the AP's to believe. The real AP's are the ones who set it all up, the AP's versus SP's.
I guess then really stupid would be to wise up? Go to Disneyland, get some decent memories and get it out of your system after one or two trips instead of never.

Gotta get my entertainment where I can find it! Note: the winking smiley was to indicate just how serious my objection was.
BTW, I'm headed out on a little trip starting tomorrow and plan to find some entertainment in one or two floating casinos.

I hate Disney and anything associated with it. BTW, Walt was a Nazi supporter.

And a deadbeat too, but at least some good came of it.
He's the right hand man of Steve Wynn when it comes to casino design and decoration: extremely talented.
He and Steve worked hand in hand on Steve's casinos.
A genuine friendship and symbiotic business arrangement exists between them, which completes the circle when one considers that Roger's dad was instrumental in giving Steve his big break into the world of Las Vegas casinos and their development.
Not ahead necessarily. Just listing a few guys that I think should be poll choices.Quote: bigfoot66I'm a big fan of the D but come on, how can you list Stevens ahead of Wynn or Adelson?Quote: DJTeddyBearJay Sarno

Uh, no.
That was Sarno, then Pennington and Bennett.
Wynn never owned it.

The book Super Casino is a wonderful book by Peter Earley. The whole Circus Circus story unfolds.
Now, why was the word "Circus" used in the name of the hotel/casino twice?

A very good read.
I also enjoyed (and still re-read on occasion) "The Green Felt Jungle" by Ed Reid and Ovid Demaris.
Yes, that's the same Ovid Demaris who penned "The Boardwalk Jungle," that fascinating work / expose' about how casinos came to Atlantic City.

I have the book The Green Felt Jungle too. I think I found it at a library used book sale. Probably paid less than a dollar for it. I'll have to read The Boardwalk Jungle sometime. Demaris is a very good writer.
Quote: discflickerPresident Hoover, and the people that approved building the Hoover dam. Vegas came about as the result of the builders of the dam.
Interesting, and DARE I say it, insightful.....
