Not only that but we have officially set the details:

When: May 16, 2015 6:00 PM
Place: 777 Brew House, Main Street Station

Be there or be square.

I don't quite get the inscription at the end.

Still, I'll be bumping the reminders as near daily as I can.

Those planning to attend should say so here.

Yes. It is also a gambling term meaning somebody who is a recreational player who tends to bet on hunch rather than math. The term is usually used in sports betting. The squares typically bet the favorite and/or the over. The opposite are the sharp players.

Prior to its meaning "not hip", it was a favorable attribute meaning things like honest, reliable, stand-up, etc., such as offering someone a square deal. At least up through the mid 1950's, the motto for the Cub Scouts was " Be square." I don't know whether/when that might have been revised as slang evolved.

"Be prepared" was/is the motto of the Boy Scouts, not the Cub Scouts. I was indeed in error, though. I got to thinking about it and looked it up.

The Cub Scout motto is and has been "Do your best." What I was misremembering was a line from the Cub Scout Promise that went "...be square and obey the Law of the Pack." Apparently that line was revised in 1971 when it was viewed as out of date.

Both those ring a bell from way back. I seem to recall wondering at the time what the "law of the pack" was, but was afraid to ask.

Early Egyptians buried their dead in rather shallow graves out in the desert. Often they'd find jackals digging up and eating the remains. At such times they'd notice the corpses seemed dried out but largely unspoiled.

From these observations came the jackal-headed god of the dead Anubis, and the practice of preserving bodies through mummification (which really si just an embalming technique)

From this site:

Quote:

The Law of the Pack

The Cub Scout follows Akela.
The Cub Scout helps the pack go.
The pack helps the Cub Scout grow.
The Cub Scout gives goodwill.

For those who may be curious, the same site explains that
Quote:

Akela means "good leader." To a Cub Scout, Akela may be a parent, a teacher, a religious leader, a Cub Scout leader, or another guide. A Cub Scout should choose a good leader to follow.

I participated in Scouting and have concluded it serves both social and other purposes.

Scouting obviously serves a social purpose: to allow people to meet, mix and work toward common purpose and individual growth and development.

But under the surface is the very militaristic nature of Scouting: the participants are basically being exposed to and made to be presupposed to accept a military way of life.

Uniforms, knives, survival skills, merit badges: it all can be related to what Scouts would need to know if, later in life, they join the military.

The "law of the pack" theme is akin to teaching loyalty to fellow squad / platoon members, which bond most likely allows soldiers to willingly accept grave danger in order to protect fellow "pack" members.

It's all very tribal.

Yes, the Boy Scouts were founded by Robert Baden-Powell, a British army general. Here is a Cub Scout Pack's web site I found that has a brief history of scouting, including some background on Baden-Powel and the military needs that influenced the creation of the scouting program.

When I was drafted into the army and went through basic training, I commented that the only two things I thought they tried to teach me in that eight weeks that I hadn't already learned from the Boy Scouts were: (1) How to hurt people and (2) How to kill people. And I had already learned my marksmanship from the Boy Scouts.

BTW, I have to note that, in spite of the slant that MrV gave to it, the skills taught in Scouting have a lot of value in later life even if one does not participate in the military at all.

One reason we know a lot about Egypt is that the hot, dry desert climate proved to be excellent at preserving papyrus and buildings. This means in 5,200 years, archeologists will be able to reconstruct the history of the US based on what they find in Vegas ;)

Cool! I was a Girl Scout all the way through high school, and a waterfront director at a variety of summer camps through college and my 20's. One year I did it with the Boy Scouts (the camp out of Omaha), and they sent me to a special WD BSA camp near Austin, TX to learn to teach the Boy Scout way (rather than Red Cross WSI/SCI certifications GSA, JCC, and YMCA camps use). That was a trip! 400 guys and 3 girls; I got to work with the guys who literally wrote the book on canoeing/rowboating. It's a lot harder to earn those merit badges than those of any other organizations I worked with. I was certified to award Knot Tying, Sailing, Canoeing, Rowboats, Swimming, and Lifesaving. Knot tying was totally my favorite.

That canoeing badge was especially hard and learning it gave me the biggest bruise I've ever had; you had to capsize your canoe in deep water, shake out the water while treading, flop yourself back in the canoe without tipping it again, and get back under way (that was just one requirement out of about 20). Learning to grab across the gunnels and flop your butt into the bottom was about as hard a trick as I've seen; the bruise on my hip/thigh back was the size of a dinner platter.

I agree with somebody else above about lamenting the decline in popularity of Scouting; the meetings during the school year were mostly meh, but the camping and boating was phenomenal. Miss those times so much, both doing them as a kid, and later working with kids on adventures like those. It's a big loss in kids' development to not have those experiences. Very challenging stuff.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

To keep the jackals away from the remains of the dead, Egyptians began lining the sand pit tombs with mud-brick, and sealing them with a slab of stone or more brick, before covering the whole thing with sand. At this time the wealthy, including the nobility and the kings, perhaps began mummifying their corpses on purpose.

But those early mummies were nothing at all like the mummies we know.

Yes, right, so much for "near-daily."

You may understand when I say the earliest I got home last week was 9:30 pm.

Anyway, the Old Kingdom mummies were not very well preserved. They used plaster over the wrappings, too. So these look like statues from the outside, but inside they're piles of bone. I'm not sure if the kings and wealthy of that time used Ka statues. If they didn't, then their attempts at early mummification would not have passed muster with the gods :)

Since the Boy Scouts of America present religion-designated awards for Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Maher Baba, and Zoroastrian members (and perhaps others), I suspect that your perspective that they are a "christianity-saturated organization" is heavily influenced by a particular unit you encountered. Perhaps it was one that was sponsored by a church and somehow focused on its sponsor's religion, or on the make-up of the membership of that particular unit.

I do note that I am not aware of the Boy Scouts promoting atheism or agnosticism.

Don't you guys think it might be fun to put in a game of poker as a WoV event this year? I've heard people can reserve a table at some places; seems like it's a natural for this group.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Just got a flyer from the Fremont - 33 free spins on a a $1 Blazing 7s machine plus 3 nights at Fremont 5/15-17. I'm in. Doesn't being square or four square have something to do with Masonic ritual also?

that's a very weird promo. I've only seen that on new slots such as wonder woman this year. is this new or has it been going on for years?

I'm all for that, I'm confident there's many more here that would participate. Djat c, Rudeboyoi, Drich? Mike , Mission and others I can't think of.

At our very first WoVCon, on 6/15/2011, we first met at the 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station, but we adjourned and re-convened for poker at Binions. That was one of the two times that I have played poker in the past 37 years. I think that Croupier and maybe his wife were the big winners. I lost a grand total of $10, including tokes.

I'm down. I'd prefer limit over no - limit but would be willing to play either way. Binions or golden nugget would probably be the best places to start a game.

Craps at MSS for me, with maybe a taste of Hawaiian color at the Cal tables.

But the Cal only has 2X odds, while its sister-property, MSS, has much higher odds.

I wonder why there is this difference?
