Why does EVERY (and I am talking 100% here) pillow case come out of the dryer inside out? Shouldn't it be close to a 50-50 proposition? lol

And why I am at it, how come salt comes pouring out of the shaker and pepper, you have to bang the shaker until your hand hurts?

pepper shakers usually have less holes (over pepering could ruin a dish easier than over salting)
salt is denser than pepper....therefore shakes out through the hole easier

I've heard this (the pillow case question) answered that the object is sewn in the inside-out orientation, so that the seams are hidden. That makes this the "natural" position, a bit as if you must "wind the spring" to get it right side out. Then, in the agitation in the washer and dryer, it greatly tends to return to its original, natural orientation.

But not 100%. That's just the way it seems.

You must live in the desert.

Live in a temperate or tropical climate, and you'd find it opposite. Salt melts in the humidity and solidifies into a solid block. You have to smash it to get anything out of the shaker.

Yes, I do, but wait....I've lived other places....well not the tropics, I guess.

Perhaps because salt is more uniform in size and shape thanks to its chemical bond whereas every piece of pepper will be different due to it was ground off a larger shape by an irregular blade?

This is a reasonable answer Doc. Tee-shirts are designed similarly, but yet it seems like they are a more 50-50 proposition as it should be. Perhaps it is just selective memory on my part with the pillow cases. I know it's not 100%, but it sure seems like it.

I noticed when we went to sea salt the grains were bigger and came out slower than the common table salt.

Probably a little "knuckledragger" of me but I drilled bigger holes in our pepper shaker and it comes out a lot faster.

I'm guessing that one of the waiters' chores every night is to fill the pepper shakers. They shouldn't fill the shakers completely--they should leave some free space for the pepper to move when the shaker is shook.

When I briefly worked banquets this was indeed required. They wanted no "empty space" showing, IOW filled to the brim. Sharp minds will notice that the stuff on the bottom may go years without being changed, but I see nothing, NOTH-ING.

Pillows are such a pain to put in the case, maybe you're turning the case inside out when you take them off the pillow. Just a W.A.G...

Many years ago, I worked as a bus boy in a diner, overnight shift. On the first Tuesday each month, we were required to empty all the condiment containers and put them thru the dishwasher. The contents were discarded.

there was a tv news report locally of the most bacteria laden risks for people eating out (other than the bathrooms)

1- lemons
2-salt and pepper shakers.(not inside but outside....touch the shaker and eat a roll.....instant bacteria

since then I never ask for lemon in my ice tea.

I can't help you with the pillow case question, but since we're onto salt & pepper...

1. Don't let anybody else grind your pepper. Get a pepper mill (or several) and buy whole peppercorns. I've got at least three pepper mills in my kitchen right now - black pepper, smoked black pepper and white pepper.

2. Use kosher salt or some kind of large flake sea salt and just put it in a small bowl and pinch with your fingers - or get a salt grinder to go with your pepper mill.

Don't let anybody else chop your garlic or squeeze your lemons, either.

I can help you with the pillowcase dilemma.

1. leave the pillowcase inside-out from the laundry, or (right side out) grab the center seam and push the case partially inside-out (until you see the seam).

2. (if inside-out)reach inside and grab the center seam, (all)then grab the short edge of the pillow, with the same hand.

3. peel the pillowcase up the pillow with the other hand while continuing to hold the seam and edge together.

Goes on in 3 seconds and the pillow is straight in the case, all the way in. Lots easier than shaking the pillow down into the case.

This method kind of reminds me of something else, but I can't put my finger on it. :)

heeheehee...it's definitely a kissin' cousin to that other one...but why you can't put a finger on it anytime you want, I can't really imagine.

Pure salt yes... commercial salt has "anti-caking" ingredients added. Brown sugar is a much better example. Turns into rock candy in about a week even in the N.E.

It took YEARS to wean my parents off canned or jarred black pepper. Fresh-ground is the only way to go. Ditto on the garlic and lemon. Good advice there.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

in restaurants I horrify my wife by unscrewing the pepper shaker top about every time

The pepper shaker is the one with more/larger holes. Most people put them in the wrong shaker. Has always been a pet peeve of mine. When the shakers actually came labelled this was always the way they were.
