Before I came to my current place of work the coldest temperatures I had ever experienced was 28F until last year when I got here and it was a cool 12F. It has gotten down to about 5F but honestly there is no difference for me between 15F and 5F.......
I went to sleep at 6:00a.m., and got up at something like 10:00a.m., waited around until 1:00p.m. for the owner to show up so that I could jump my car, or for the maintenance guy to show up, call the owner at 1:00p.m. and he had just gotten up, so I said, "Screw it," and called my Night Auditor, who lives about a half mile away, and asked to borrow his car. He was cool with that, but HE had also just gotten up, so told me he'd pick me up in about an hour.
Again, I could walk there in under ten minutes, so I told him I was just coming over. In any event, I walked that half mile in the negative-teens (again, factoring in wind chill) and, no, there's really no appreciable difference between that and negative-thirty. I'm sure the latter will kill you faster, but in terms of how ridiculously cold you are, how long it takes for your thighs to feel like solid blocks of ice, and the short duration of time required for your penis to actually retract inside of your body (kidding), they're pretty much effectively the same temperature.
Quote: TomspurIt was once so cold outside my penis shriveled up to about 6 inches :)
That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode about George's shrinkage. Funny stuff.
Everyone in the cold snap should monitor the tire pressure in their vehicles. The cold can drop it quickly so don't wait for the light to come on. I checked some of mine and they were all down three or four pounds.

Yup, I haven't driven the Saturn since last
Thurs and 2 of them are down. Started right
up though, 12 years old.

Yeah I learned about that this vacation in Tahoe. The tire pressure warning came on and warned me that all my wheels were flat.....when I checked them, obviously they were fine.
Scared me just a little and had to do a double take first.
Perhaps the cold has some effect on the wheel pressure sensors too?
rage now, people tired of getting their driveways plowed
shut for the 3rd time in one day are taking pot shots at
drivers. Pole barns are collapsing every day in MI from
the snow weight. They said there's more snow on the
ground now than in the last 40 winters.
The Great Lakes are frozen, the rivers and creeks ditto.
My bird feeders are running out of food at a record rate.
6 more in of snow tomorrow.

Yeah, my wife tells me it was 80 degrees today in Vegas.....hey, hey :)
Quote: AxiomOfChoiceThe weather is pretty nice in California!
I lived there for 7 years and never went back
even for a visit. Nice weather, the people there
in general I don't care for. I'll take cold weather
any day over living in what used to be a nice
place till the bums and illegals and dope heads
ruined it.

You can't really compare different parts of the state. San Francisco is nothing like LA which is nothing like San Diego. And none of them are anything like the small towns along the coast or the places that are further inland.

I would totally live in California. I would live in SD or in some of the smaller golfing villages between SD and LA if I had the money.
I do worry about the earthquake issues but not enough to dissuade me to live there. The main reason I don't live there is because you need a certain level of income to live there the same way we live in Vegas.......I certainly don't make that level.......yet......

I lived in Marin Co, SF, Santa Maria, Ventura,
and ended up in Santa Barbara for 5 years.
I hated LA so much I refused to go there.
As a rule, Calif is full of way too many vapid
people, and you really do get sick of the nice
weather. Except they do have crappy weather
a good deal of the time 3-4 months of the year.
You realize it isn't everything, in the scheme of
things it's actually very far down the list of
what's important in life. It draws the 'skaters'
like a moth to a flame, those who want to
skate thru life and they need a warm climate
to do it in. FL has the same problem.
Quote: EvenBobYou realize it isn't everything...
No, it's not everything, but as far as those things go it's a pretty good thing!
Quote: paisielloNo, it's not everything, but as far as those things go it's a pretty good thing!
I used to think that, but the warm climate people
wore me down. They're not serious like cold
climate people. Too much welfare, too much
crime, too many bums. Way too many flakey
people. Shallowness rules they day in Calif,
it's all about how much money you make and
the car you drive and the clothes you wear and
the job you have. You can know somebody 30min
and they'll tell you their annual income, where they
went to college, what their mortgage is, what their
car is, and what school they send their kids to.
You can know somebody 5 years where I live and
never know any of that. It's because we judge
people on their character and how they present
themselves, not on their accomplishments and
lifestyle. Warm weather is at the bottom of my
list now.

Have an ex-friend who just got several years of probation for firing a pellet gun at a snowplow driver for... you guessed it... rage that his driveway got plowed in. Idiots.

Was just up your way. Stayed in St Ignace, played in a tourney in Moran Bay. Friday was pretty nice, but when that snowstorm rolled in in the afternoon, it got cold as a sumbitch. That wind is a killer. It was -2F* when we got up the next day, and I was out there with no shirt on. With no wind it ended up being an absolutely beautiful day.
Oh, and your snow is laughable. We get more in a half an hour than you had in entirety ;)

BS, dude, mine is as big as yours any day. I
just saw we're in line to beat the all time
record in our area from 1951. That was
the mutha of all snowfall years..

Quote: IbeatyouracesWe've had around 73-74 inches so far around here. The record is 90+ inches from way back in the 1800's. Expecting 3-6 inches more tonight.
We're nowhere near that but working on it. Record is 110" from '94

Well, whip it out, then!
Since my home is a backcountry blip, I can't find the site that gave me snowfall totals I saw back in January. But in one, 4 day storm alone, we got 65". Our yearly total back in January was already over 150", and it sure hasn't stopped since then.
I'd make a forum bet that not one single poster here can boast higher snowfall, but like Mission's smoking challenge, it'd be unfair to the point I couldn't accept it in good conscience.

Try weather underground. this is the site the weather gurus love. Just put your zip code in the top box, then check the almanac tab for the snowfall.
It's downright balmy in Anchorage, AK.Quote: AxiomOfChoiceThe weather is pretty nice in California!

And with this weeks final flurry, I have just passed 300" for the year. THREE HUNDRED. And though it's almost April, there's sure to be some last minute spurts before we're out of it for good.
I believe I've won this round, not just over you, but every single person that's ever signed in to WoV.

I spent two winter's in Valdez, Ak.

I didn't think it snowed all that much there.
But I was talking this year, not lifetime. Suppose I should've stated that lol. But anyways, it's still March. I know there's still more to come...

I don't own it, I was just there is all. It's crazy to cut tunnels through town and walk out the second story of your house.
This year? I haven't watched this year but Thomson pass above there avalanched and closed the only road out for weeks.
This year the lows here have been around 60 or so, its over 80 right now, Lake Havasu Az. No snow to shovel or plow. I have a tomato about to pick off the vine.
As always Face you present class posts, I even like the one that has caused you grief.
No good deed goes unpunished.
If I was back home, yesterday would have been taken off to go see the TIGERS opening day game
We had about 18 inches of snow during the month of March..... hopefully most will get melted away this weekend as we are suppose to see some sun and 50 degree temps... I"ll be outside in shorts if that happens
The local radio station has a contest running.... pick the date the huge snow pile will be gone ( since it stays cold all winter it never melts away so it is trucked out to a storage yard) they said the pile contains enough snow to cover the field of 44 CFL stadiums about 40 inches deep..... its so big I picked Sept 21...... 2015!!!

That's funny, sorry.
I've seen it snow in Montana in July and August! Only around a 6 inch dump and didn't stay long but any month is suspect.
Compared to Alaska, when the sun is up 24/7 although I was on the Southern half I never saw it snow past April although memory being poor it might have been early May but not in July.
It should warm up for real soon, Face. When do you plant corn anyway? We are picking tomato's.
Quote: petroglyphThat's funny, sorry.
Meh, no apology needed. Like I said, I was expecting it. But if I don't gripe about it, I risk losing my WNY resident's card ;)
Quote: petroglyphIt should warm up for real soon, Face. When do you plant corn anyway? We are picking tomato's.
Picking tomatoes?! Guys up here are just this weekend beginning to drive the stakes for them. The corn fields haven't even been touched yet. Not even tilled and disked let alone sown. I suppose that'll start any day now, but they risk dragging half the field down the road with them now. Had to use the tractor to get my car trailer because my truck would rut the swampy yard all to hell, and that never happens up here on the gravel hill.
