I just learned that a movie called Runner Runner starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake will be released Oct. 4th. It's about the owner (Affleck) of an online poker site in Costa Rica who gets confronted by a college student (Timberlake) who thinks he has been cheated by the site. Affleck has some history in poker. He once hired Annie Duke and her brother Howard Lederer to coach him. Annie was married to Ben Duke from Columbia, Montana just west of Billings. They had four kids. She got her start in the 10-20 game at the Crystal Lounge in Billings, which is my watering hole when I'm in Billings. They still talk about her there. At the 2004 WSOP there were rumors floating through the poker games about Annie and Affleck. About two months later she was on the cover of Cardplayer Magazine. In the interview she stated "People want to know what it's like to be a poker player and a single mother of four." That's the first we heard of her separation from Ben Duke.

I remember Affleck filming a movie called "The Town" at Mohegan Sun a few years ago. Did anyone see it? Was it good?

I have that DVD here at the house as my wife is a BIG Ben Affleck fan.

I don't remember any portion of it being in a Casino setting.

They are bank robbers that run around South Boston.

It's a pretty good movie!

The Town

Maybe he was staying at Mohegan Sun during the filming?

For a little Poker action during down times.
I don't know everything but I know a lot.

No, they were definitely filming. A dealer that I know was chosen to deal to him over and over and over. You could look down on it from upstairs by the restaurants.

Brian Koppelman and David Levien are the screen writers and producers. The guys who brought us Rounders. This is actually Rounders 2 with a different cast. Originally this is the Rounders sequel where Worm gets to run another scam involving online poker taking advantage of the Moneymaker Effect in some Caribbean destination. Looks like the negotiations behind the scenes didn't pan out and evolved into this with Affleck and Timberlake. Looks interesting but I am sure it would not be as good as the gritty classic of Rounders.

Jumping on this a week late. The Town is a terrific movie, IMO. If you haven't seen it, rent it. Affleck is great, as is Jeremy Renner.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 94%.

I seem to remember a few real life incidents where suitcases of cash were being moved around these postage stamp countries and one jet caught fire so there was some scrambling about saving the "real" cargo.

Oh. I hadn't known that. I thought R2 was going to focus on Michael's relocation to Vegas. I was thinking the story would involve some of the other characters visiting and/or relocating as well.

Instead its a story about a Rounders-type who gets cheated in cyberspace and relocates to the only "there" that exists in cyberspace, the fast and loose lifestyle of vest pocket republics that host the servers.

Just saw this. I'd say most anybody who comes to this site would enjoy parts of the movie; it starts out really good but doesn't finish well. Affleck is perfect for his role - a guy running a successful online gambling site. To watch it to see gambling - meh, not so much.

I'm old fashioned enough to agree with having the bad guys lose out against the good guys, but in this case it was overreach. The way the kid turns the tables on Affleck's character, and the FBI, was pretty lame, lacking credibility. It was as if whoever wrote the ending thought the movie was a comedy, but this was certainly no such thing and it didn't fit.

The movie gets its title from the poker expression runner, runner. Affleck's character refers to the difficulty of getting a job on Wall Street as equivalent to getting a runner, runner flush in Texas Hold-em.

Trivia question: what is a runner, runner and what are the odds of getting a flush that way according to the movie? No fair looking it up, although I had to LOL.

a runner, runner is a hand requiring both the turn and the river to complete. In the movie they say the odds of a flush that way are 4%.

actually, I do wonder if it isn't 0.4% instead of 4%

but in the movie they say "4%" ... and are in awe, like 1 in 25 is astronomical

If runner runner flush is the only way to win, yes it's about 4% (1 in 25). Of course movies will make it more dramatic. We've all hit longer odds paying video poker.

Probably the most famous runner runner flush here:

You mean they haven't done that themselves? Not saying everyone or you.....but.

Wasn't the original premise of the story to be based on Calvin Ayres?
