Gabes is an a nickname I have been called all my life, primarily due to people shortening my last name because it is rather lengthy (4 syllables, 10 letters) and one of those German names that people think is tough to pronounce (although I think it is fairly straightforward). 2 is my old baseball number, and what could be better than one 2 than two 2's

Mine is a play on my last name. I get given the nickname "Duffman" no matter where I go and that was before "The Simpsons" though more so after. I adds the AZ when I lived in Arizona and kept it as Arizona is kind of a state you can be known as the guy from when you get back. It is unique enough I get it on most boards and blogs I visit so will keep it for life.

Once upon a time in a Usenet forum, someone accused me of being a "math extremist" because I wouldn't believe their foolproof, guaranteed winning system for gambling (on roulette, I think). I took it as a compliment -- and my handle.

A long long time ago, when the world wide web was young (not the internet, the WWW), my friend set up the Online Web Village (allegedly one of the first 1000 pages on the WWW, but I'm skeptical on that claim, as was he). It was a silly graphical interface where people could create a house which linked to their University homepage, and simple chat, and add roads and water features. Very basic. I put my house in the corner surrounded by ponds and called it the 'The Cesspit', linked to my home page, called that 'The Cesspit', and filled it with links to various crap I was interested in.

I've just used that name ever since, as it is never taken on forums or boards, whereas the name I preferred often was. This information probably means you can find my real ID very easily, which I guess is a downside...

About 95 percent of all the gambling I've ever done in my entire life has been in Northern Nevada: Reno, Tahoe, and Carson City. Reno doesn't have the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Compared to Vegas, the table minimums are lower, the buffets are cheaper, the casinos are less crowded, the dealers are friendlier, the summer weather is better, there's less road traffic, and while 6:5 blackjack exists in Reno, it's not nearly as common as on the Las Vegas Strip. In other words, Reno, Nevada is the perfect gambling destination for a low-roller like me.

That's the nice thing about screen names. You get to pick it. When i was a kid you got stuck with a nickname. Like red, skinny, fats.
or even Buzzard if you were a skinny kid with a big nose.

I been meaning to start a thread about nicknames, and I won't hijack this one. I used to say all my childhood friends were dead or in jail. Now they are mostly dead. Tried to track them down on last visit to Baltimore. Hard as hell to remember their real names. LOL

Not so funny is my best buddy growing up. Probably dead, all I know for sure is he got 20-25 in prison , instead of 2-5 or maybe beating the rap. All because he was the only kid who didn't have a nickname. Talk about bad luck.

This is how the wiz got his screen name. I think I answered the phone a few times in my youth from his alter ego. All I know for sure was a guy named Don calling Henry G to offer him a nickle lines on a few games in the late 50's.

Mine has nothing to do with playing cards, nor am I a smooth talking con-man that rolls with the crew of Hannibal Smith, Howling Mad Murdock, and Bad Attitude Baracus.

“Face” is just a carryover of youthful stupidity. In the days of adolescent threats and machismo, “face” was my one-upper. If someone threatened to punch me, I’d threaten to punch their face. Kick me? I’ll kick your face. Kill me? I’ll kill your FACE!, always said with ridiculous emphasis on “face”. It was so absurd, it couldn’t be topped.

It spread to “snaps” or “playing the dozens”. You know…“You’re mama’s so fat..” to which the reply was “Oh yeah? So is your FACE!" Stupid, I know, but man, it stuck. “So is your face” became the widespread comeback, for which there was no retort.

It eventually spread to my entire peer group, and was used so often it got shortened to simply one word, “face”. One word, and we all knew what it meant, what it signified. It became a war cry during sports, a declaration of superiority, a mock threat towards your safety, eventually almost a greeting for those “in the know”, and, since I was the creator, my nickname.

I’m fortunate enough to still be close to some of those from way back when, and every now and again I will hear the old war cry. It never fails to elicit laughter and a smile =)

Mine is pretty straightforward. I like Beethoven's music, and I (mistakenly) thought that 'Beethoven' had been taken since it tends to be a popular username, so I added '9th' because I love that symphony.

What about you?

Good tastes =) I prefer the 14th. The 3rd stanza especially, it's just so metal. My hockey playlist, among the Pantera, Rage, and DMX, contains its fair share of Beethoven.

I own the domain thebigpayback.com, which I acquired back in the day but had to shorten my username as WOV doesn't allow longish names anymore. I always thought the domain was cool, being both a marketing slogan for Discover Card and the name of Springsteen song, so was surprised to find it available although granted that was many years ago. It will soon be the home of our "casino directory" project which should be soft-launched in the next month or two.
Lack of prior planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part.

There's a lot of great stuff on YouTube like this. In the "Are you better than a 3rd grader" department, check out 9-year-old Umi Garrett playing Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu (which features a 6-on-8 rhythm that most people can't even tap out on a table):

This is a glorious recording of a master at work. He was 80
when he did this, and its from memory. Wilhelm Kempff
was 96 when died. If we could see whats going on in his
brain as he played, it would be lit up like a Christmas tree
on both sides. Watch some of the posers play this sonata,
they pound the keys like they're banging a whore. Kempff
caresses them, even at 80. Marvelous.

I had that exact thought while watching this.

I kept asking my girl "wtf is he looking at?". I thought he was looking at sheet music, he sure as hell wasn't watching the keys. Then the wide shot showed there was nothing, and the face shot confirmed it; he was looking into his own mind.

80 years old in this vid? My god. I couldn't even move my fingers that fast, and I'm 32. "Caresses" isn't even the right word; it's incredibly severe right when it needs to be, it's hauntingly tragic exactly where it needs to be. It's intense, it's serene, it's manic, it's tranquil, it... it's just sublime.

Watch his eyes, he rarely if ever blinks. This is
genius at work. To be that old and that flawlessly
skilled is unreal. I watched it four times. Classical
