For comparison, here's a Google street view of this shot. It is NOT Atlantic Avenue. It's much further inland!
The point on this map is the Applebee's seen in the flood photo:

Nice! That's about the best airport you could've hoped to have a 4 hour layover in, too. Take a walk to terminal 2 and check out the shrine to Butch O'hare. I tear up every time I read it.
edit: 4 hours, really? 4? You could probably go to Rivers and play for 2 hours or so...:-)
I'm pleased that the rain has passed, if that was the worst then we won't get any flooding in the house. The wind has taken out the local TV feed for DirecTV, which was from a repeater on the Nescopeck ridge. I expect the dish to get scrambled some time tonight.
On a side note, Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs robocalled us, offering $25 to come out tomorrow! For reference, my weekly comps are down to $10 since I've cut back dramatically on my gambling.
It's raining very hard with consistent wind - I have a tough time judging but I'd say 15-20 mph which isn't all that bad. Then occasionally I'll get a gust that shakes the building (sort of, primarily just hear it really loudly). I wouldn't be surprised at all if I lose power at anytime.
How do you pronounce "Conshohocken?"Quote: rdw4potusI wouldn't say it's raining particularly hard here (Conshohocken, PA), .

it's much easier than I'd feared. In fact, it's pretty much exactly how it looks. con-sho-hock-en.

Langford is a jackass for any number of reasons, this included. But Christie had the authority to do more than just suggest that evacuating was a good idea. Why didn't he use his executive authority to enforce a mandatory evacuation?
Soldiers guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier were just granted permission to leave their post! All 3 refused!

What can ya do? Arrest the people that won't evacuate?
No. You just help those people you can....
FYI: I lost power in my house about an hour ago.
Then about 1/2 hour ago, a huge pine tree came down, knocking down my electric and cable, as well as part of another tree, and is sitting on my driveway. I'll have to drive across the back lawn and part of the neighbor's lawn to get out.
I'm online thru a hotspot elsewhere in the area.
of the NYSE. Oh boy..
Water was reported rushing into Battery Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel and into the World Trade Center site.
The casinos should easily withstand the storm.
Quote: ahiromuSo I hate to get all "me" here but the real question that's on my mind is: I have a free room at Trump in November, anyone think I'll get to use it?
I wouldn't plan on walking between casinos on the boardwalk, but each individual casino should be able to reopen pretty quickly.

Sure, but they were there today, too:-)
Quote: Mosca11:30 and all is well in NE PA. At least our part. The wind is howling, the house is creaking, the lights have flickered a few times, but so far so good.
Same here. I wouldn't want to be outside right now, but this could be a lot worse.
Quote: rdw4potusSame here. I wouldn't want to be outside right now, but this could be a lot worse.
It could.
At home, there's a light drizzle and strange wind. It's not strong, it's just coming from every conceivable direction. The cricks are high, the water's flowing, and I can only imagine the number of steelies making a run.
One man's disaster...
During Derecho we were without power for 96 hours. Sometimes I suspect we are fine and they cut it off to fix the grid elsewhere more safely [we are underground for utilities here, but part of an electrical grid above ground]. That latter frustrating situation could happen again.
The light of day will tell more.
Toronto airport I would guess is 400 miles or so from New York City...that should give you an idea how big this system is
Detroit papers were saying lake Huron was expecting 30-35 ft waves from this storm....that would be at least 500 miles inland from New York City
The Embracer 190 we flew out of Toronto on was getting bounced around pretty good just sitting on the tarmac waiting to leave the gate...winds lifting the wings enough to shake the whole plane.... Calgary on the other hand was calm 3000 miles inland from New York :)
Fuckin-a just long enough to have to toss all the stuff in the fridge.
Quote: ahiromuI lost power at around midnight last night. Got it back not five minutes ago.

If you didnt open the fridge in that time and you had a decent amount of stuff in there it would barely go up a few degrees. I know that is the case with mine.

Thank you. Yeah a friend told me the same thing, his milk didn't smell spoiled so my lunch meat... Probably the most valuable thing in there... Should be fine.
For me, a fizzle, and I'll take that. Right now it's a light all day rain, with medium winds around 15mph.
It was just as well. I was tired and figured I'd be able to catch up on some sleep. So at 9:00 I was in bed.
At about 9:20 I was looking out the front window and saw something. At the same time I heard a loud crash. I freaked out, jumped out of bed and surveyed the situation.
A large pine tree fell across our front yard, taking down half a maple tree with it.
Fortunately, it missed the house. Unfortunately, it took my electric cables out. So when the rest of the area gets their electric back, I'll still be waiting....

Quote: MrVWow, the boardwalk in AC got hammered.
boardwalk in tatters
The video is misleading. The part of the boardwalk that was destroyed is the far northern section. Several hundred yards north of Revel Casino, the northern most casino on the boardwalk. That section of the boardwalk has no stores or businesses and has been deteriorating for years. There is railings missing and roped off and wooden steps to the beach that have been closed for years. Boards are loose, broken or missing. The only people that use that far north part of the boardwalk are those that live up that way and bicyclist that ride north past revel, fishermen and the homeless. It is NOT the portion of the boardwalk near the casinos or that have all the stores and pizza shops and other businesses.
That's why they moved Serendipity, the house used as The Inn at Rodanthe in Nights in Rodanthe. Our house is farther down the island but it might be inaccessible for our usual Thanksgiving festivities. The road washed out last year for Irene but they had a temporary bridge in place in time.
My sister lives 3 blocks off the beach in Ocean City NJ; her husband is an emergency responder. She said that her house is fine, no damage except for some tree limbs down; but a couple blocks south there are homes flooded halfway to the second floor. Greg said that the parts that are devastated are awful, but much of it is OK, too.
That's the way this storm was. In our area, much of NE PA was spared, and most of us have power and the trucks have all headed to NJ, or W VA, or wherever they're needed; but there are the people who lost roofs, had trees fall on houses, or cars, or, terribly, children: to those people, me calling it "a fizzle" is insulting.
So, I'll call it what it was. A storm that left selective devastation across a large part of the US.

I would say very misleading. That no man's land up beach was the only photo op of Boardwalk damage that the media could find. The casinos and the rest of the Boardwalk withstood the storm just fine and are awaiting the word from regulators before reopening.
No less misleading are photos of flooded streets that imply that the city was overrun by the ocean. That is not seawater. That area by N. Michigan and Baltic near the outlets often floods during rainstorms.
