less, we're just glad its not happening to us.

I've been to Philly. How can sutting it down be bad..
Well, it'll keep most people indoors, which means I'll have the crick all to myself. All that rain will have the steelies running wild, bring it on

You can't get to Logan?Quote: cestanlI'm stuck in Connecticut right now..... My flight home from Providence was cancelled tomorrow. Trying to decide whether to attempt a flight out of Albany tomorrow night at 5:00pm or a 6:30pm flight out of Syracuse. I do not want to wait until Wednsday or later to fly home >>

Not enough vodka? Thanks, I knew it..

I can, but I was told nothing would be available there until Wednesday night.
Quote: JBSo T.F. Green and Logan are out, what about Bradley? Their web site indicates no weather-related advisories or delays.
The only United flights available out of there are booked. There are two flights from BDL going thru Charlotte to Kansas City.... But I don't think they can rebook me onto a USAIR flight.
I WOULD much rather fly out of BDL than anywhere else at this point, as I'm in a hotel in Cromwell at the moment

Are the US Air flights code shared with UAL? UAL can put you on those flights under their code, but if the plane doesn't fly, you're utterly SOL. Totally and completely f*cked (and not in the good way).
I may try a different event tuesday, and then there's a nice little slate of opportunities on Wednesday.

I spent 5 1/2 hours on hold with United trying to get something today.... Nothing was working on the website in regards to rebooking early this afternoon, and now that I'm able to use that part of the site, it doesn't offer me the option of getting onto those USAIR flights. I can see they're available for purchase, but for some reason I'm not able to transfer over to them. The lady on the phone said there wasn't anything I could do out of there either.
It doesn't make sense, because they ARE code shared with United.

If the flights are cancelled, the operating carrier is responsible. But you aren't paying the operating carrier, you're paying UAL. So it creates an odd situation where you'd be UAL's customer and USAir's problem. So the policy is to not rebook customers on the star alliance flights (also, US Air has their own customers to accommodate). But, a person can usually request/demand the booking at their own risk.
To answer what I suppose was your original question: Albany is better than syracuse. It's earlier and closer to you. What connection does that have that wouldn't be storm affected?

Albany to Cleveland, then to Kansas City. Same with Syracuse, it goes thru Cleveland as well. It seems the Boston flights (and I looked into Manchester NH as well) go thru Newark or Washington Dulles..... So that's explains why its out for now.

That's not bad. Is it the same flight out of Cleveland, just with a longer/shorter layover?

Exactly :)
Quote: NareedI don't want to appear insensitive. Certainly hurricanes are major disasters, with a huge potential for property destruction and loss of life. But as in all things, there are degrees to consider. As far as I can make out, Sandy is a Category 1 storm and it doesn't seem to be expected to grow stronger. So as hurricanes go, this is a rather mild one.
So my question is: why are the TV news networks hyping it up so much?
On the other hand, I've never experienced a hurricane or even been particularly near one. Also, I do know areas that don't experience hurricanes on a regular basis are less prepared to deal with one.
Just wondering.
There is another huge storm moving east, along with a cold front moving down from Canada. All three are going to meet at the same time, with the two fronts combining rain and the cold front causing both storms to stall over the area. There's more, but that is most of it. I was just reading about how the low pressure is currently a record for a storm of that size. Hurricane is measured by wind speed, but there is something to be said about a 951 (and dropping) millibar storm along with 80mph winds. The "perfect storm" of '91 was measured at 960 millibars. Lower is stronger.
Our home is about 30 miles from the predicted path of the eye of the storm. I'm anxious.
barometric pressure. The lowest ever recorded
on the east coast was 946, and that was in
the late 1930's. Right now Sandy stands at
950. Thats very low for a hurricane that far
north and is one of the reasons everybody
is going a little nuts getting ready for it.

No, they deserved to lose. Beat the Yankees
4 in a row, then lose 4 in a row? How sad
is that. I'm not really a sports fan and this
is why. I rooted for them losing tonight,
to rob the SF fans of a hometown victory.
And isn't that half the fun of your team
winning the WS, to do it at home? So there,
SF...

With no TV, all my Sandy news has been gossip and through here. So...
Should I worry? I'm 40 miles south of Buffalo and wasn't joking when I said I totally planned on being out fishing Tues and Weds.
People are telling me to stock up on food and firewood. Really?

It sound uncomfortable at the very least.

Bradley will be closing at 1 PM today.
Details?
I wouldn't say it's raining particularly hard here (Conshohocken, PA), but there were some almost impassable parts of 202 (Dekalb Pike) when I drove over to Valley Forge before coming into work. That road isn't particularly low, so I suspect storm drains were clogged by leaves.
Whoa.
Quote: MrVPer the news: "Atlantic City's public safety director said most of the city is flooded."
Details?
I've been watching the Resorts beach cam but it went blank again.
Here in Connecticut the winds are increasing, they're closing roads and my lights are flickering. The generator is at the ready but I'll most likely lose the internet.
I don't mind a break but how am I going to know if those guys paid their bets to you know who? :)
Quote: cestanlWell my flight just got cancelled out of Albany, but i got rebooked on that flight out of Syracuse. Looks like i get to enjoy that stretch of I-90 once more. So incredibly scenic too, this time of year with the leaves changing.
I hope that works. The storm should reach Syracuse before it reaches Albany. Maybe the problem in Albany was related to where the plane was coming from or something.
Quote: slytherIs it me or is everyone making an overly huge deal about this just because it's going to affect major population centers with..wait for it.. 6 foot waves?! In California they call that Surf.
It's sustained winds of 60-80 mph. Well, supposedly, I've been waiting for those winds the past 24 hours. Currently, it's like a nice fall afternoon in Seattle.
Don't get hung up on numbers like hurricane categories or wind speed. We had more damage from the remains of Ike a few years ago than from Irene last year. A wall of water pushing into NY/NJ will do more than the wind will. And you'll have wind, too.

In California, there's a hill between the ocean and town:-) I think it's also a problem that they're expecting 6 inches of rain in 24 hours here (Philly).
Although I've prepared as best I could for the worst, I really don't think it's going to be that bad by the time it gets to NE PA. Here is the forecast from our best meteorologist, Joe Snedeker:

Hello .Sandy! Or, as the overhyped media calls it Frankenstorm. For YOU, Sandy will continue to spread westward today, making landfall near Southern New Jersey. Our winds will pick up this afternoon and evening while rainfall becomes steady and heavy. Expect temps to stay generally in the 50s with gusty east winds rocking to over 40mph at times and rainfall totals generally between 2″-5″ by tomorrow afternoon. should that scenario occur, we should weather the storm just fine with only limited flooding and isolated wind damage and power outages. Always good to expect the best but prepare for the worst as rainfall can be greater in spots and wind gusts exceeding 50mph at times. Hey, Im a positive guy, and do feel much of our area will get through Sandy with limited damage. From Tomorrow afternoon through Wednesday (Halloween), the system will continue to degrade and lessen its impact. Our winds will die down and rain will taper off to showers that may even linger into Thursday and Friday. Hey, stay right here for all of the latest with rivers, radar, flooding, and your forecast specifics. Weve got it all on this website, wnep and wnep2.

As the AC photo shows, it IS a big deal.

I went to work this morning about 20 miles from home. (Computer system manager for an electrical supply warehouse.) The wife didn't want me to go, but the winds weren't bad and it wasn't raining, etc.
Yeah, the REPORTS are bad, etc. Almost all of the guys, and about half the gals, made it to work ontime. Somewhere around 10:00 I heard that we were sold out of D cell batteries. At 11:50 we were told that we're closing at noon, and we weren't sure if we would open tomorrow.
The drive in and back was pretty easy. I saw no evidence of any closed business. In fact, on the way home, I stopped at a gas station quickie mart. The manager said he's unsure how long he's staying, but figured it was gonna be a few more hours.
I've been home for 3 hours. I've been ignoring the news, just vegging. There have been several big wind gusts, as well as the lights blinking a couple times.
But so far, I'm doing OK..
Of course, while driving home I heard that the worst of it will be overnight.
...Fingers crossed...
