I saw a post here the other day from someone wondering where WizardofEngland had gone (WOE appeared to abruptly stop posting after being a fairly active member of the forum).

I always wonder myself about the various reasons forum members come and go (especially active ones). Sometimes I see where they may have gotten into an argument with someone and left in anger. But sometimes they just seem to disappear and it makes a person wonder if they just moved on to other interests, are taking a break, or maybe they passed away or something.

I did a quick scan through the member listing, and below are forum members who were fairly active (100+ posts) and haven't logged on to the site since June or later. Hopefully they are all ok and doing well.

While we're at it in kind of a loose thread, yes, I have wondered why on-line Craps is a, "Heads-Up," game. It could be to avoid flame wars the first time someone takes the, "Don't!" Could you imagine what some of the players would say were it not for the possibility of getting kicked out of the casino or punched in the face?

This has always been a topic of interest in online chat since the days of Usenet. You chat back and forth. Then after sometime someone says, "hey, where is soandso?" Then you realize how in an active forum people come and go. I have dissapeared from places because of a change in jobs or graduating college years ago. I'm sure many people have plenty of time on their hands, sometimes even have a boss that does not care if you spend hours posting every day (don't laugh, that is how I was briefly in the top posters in this board's early days.) Then the job changes or some other "real life" thing happens and you leave, fast or slow. Sometimes I force myself on a break for a few days to a week, I cannot be alone in that.

Then others just move on to other interests, like when the CB Craze died off.

Though I doubt that you were thinking of me, you did make me think of a thread on here last year. I spend half the year travelling for work and so go through long spells where I don't post much, then have a lot of downtime the rest of the year and post on here several times a day. Earlier this year I was just going into downtime and noticed a Baccarat thread on here where everyone was going, "What ever happened to heather?" LOL.

I check the forum on my iPhone almost every day, but don't usually post unless I'm at home. That's just me, though. I have no idea what anyone else's schedule is like. When I notice that someone I liked hasn't posted in a while, I like to think that they're off on an RFB-comped table games binge and hope that they're having fun.

Heather, I do indeed remember reading the thread you are referring to. It is a great example of how an active member can be missed when somebody suddenly realizes they haven't seen the member in a while.

Like you and others have said, I suppose people have many different reasons for being absent for periods of time. Although it was sad to see that nope27 had actually passed away.

On a side note, I went ahead and PM'd WizardofEngland since his absence is the one that started this particular thread. Hopefully he will respond that all is well with him!

One factor that I believe comes into play is the sense of established community that makes it hard for new members to break into. When the people on a particular forum already form a kind of 'clique', it's hard for new members joining that forum to feel involved or like they are capable of belonging. They don't get the existing in-jokes, and sometimes their comments are ridiculed or ignored because they don't have an established relationship with the pre-existing members of the forum.

In the case of people who have been members of the forum for a long period of time, and then disappear, I think the common reasons might be:

1) Lack of interest in gambling. This is my own personal reason why I haven't contributed much. I've still been reading some posts in the forums, but the amount of time I've spent on this site has reduced. In addition, I don't feel I have much to contribute anymore, so while reading is one thing, posting is something else entirely. The lack of interest for some may be a desire to reduce their gambling, perhaps because of a problem, or a lack of money to do any gambling, or simply, like me, just a general lack of interest.

2) The recent spat of personal attacks may have turned off some members.

3) The ratio of non-gambling-related posts to gambling-related posts has become off balance, and some existing members may find the site to be not quite what it used to be, or having the information they are most interested in discussing.

I agree with this, but people just have to be willing to bear down in an effort to become an accepted Member of the community, it's not hard. In my case, you're talking about four months and 1,000+ posts, and nobody has ever complained of me posting too much or inappropriately. I have posted the occasional one-liner, but I try to limit them and keep them somewhat topical. In any event, I consider the Members of this Forum to be largely welcoming, and many have been very kind to me during my time here, including yourself.

In any event, I've never felt any less than extremely welcome here.

Yes. It is very unfortunate to see anyone come across a serious gambling problem, but I would say this place would be a good place to avoid. There are inevitably posts about big wins, jackpots, great Craps sessions, RF's being hit on VP...etc Just the kind of story that drives a habitual gambler right back to the casino to take another shot...It's truly a shame when a hobby (other than AP's) gets out of control, when it should really just be fun, but it happens sometimes.

A couple of years ago I had a couple of really brutal craps trips that just completely turned off my gambling desires. I was not interested in anything gambling related, including looking at this forum, for about 4 months. Eventually the desire to play came back, and I returned to the forum about 1 month before my next trip was to take place.
The old jerrylogan and mkl feuds also drove me to ignore the forum for weeks at a time. Had that not been finally suppressed, I probably would not be here anymore.

This is true. I am actually a bit envious of members like you, 1BB (benbakdoff), WizardofEngland, etc., who were able to jump right in and become very active participating members of this forum. It seems like not everyone can pull that off. I am probably a more timid poster than I should be, but that isn’t without reason.

I lurked for quite a while before joining, and it didn’t take me long to see that this forum has a high concentration of very smart people who know their stuff. This forum doesn’t necessarily have to be a tough nut to crack, but a person better bring their A game if they want to be taken seriously. There are plenty of heavy-hitters here who will correctly call BS if you try to pass off any shenanigans. You have to have a pretty thick skin if you want to get up in the mix of things.

A thread I found interesting was the What Makes Someone a Good Forum Member thread. It correctly pointed out that there are probably way more “net takers” on this site (including myself) versus those who contribute.

Because of the caliber of the existing members, for the person who takes the time to get a real feel for this forum it can actually be somewhat intimidating to put themselves out there and make contributions to the various discussions. You’ve heard the old saying: “You don’t have to be the smartest person in the world, you just have to be the smartest person in the room.”. Well, a new member better come to grips with the fact that it’s probably not going to be the case for them here in this room. Which is not a bad thing. I had a business partner who once said you don’t need to hire anybody who isn’t at least as smart (or smarter) as you, because you don’t need them.

This forum is very fortunate to have experts in math (Wizard, miplet, MathExtremist, mustangsally, etc.), craps (7craps, RaleighCraps, etc.,) baccarat (heather, etc.), counting (LonesomeGambler, etc.), as well as experts in so many other areas. We even have our own resident man of the cloth (FrGamble) whose skin seems to be thicker than almost anybody’s besides EvenBob’s!

So this forum has a great mix of people who are able to contribute to those of us who mainly take knowledge away.

That’s my personal take on it anyway.

I appreciate the compliment! The main thing is being courteous, and you are clearly capable of that. You're also an excellent writer. Additionally, it's important to realize that one can make the occasional, or even frequent, mistake as long as one does not insist on belaboring the erroneous point by constructing clearly flimsy arguments to support something they know to be erroneous. This requires objectivity, which you also seem to have in Spades. I tend to like being wrong even more than being right, because when someone is both wrong and objective, he learns something. Admitting when one is wrong also makes one a better and less egotistical person.

That's true, but the vast majority of the people here are easily intelligent and objective enough to recognize the difference between an honest mistake and someone trying to BS just to fit in. There's nothing to be intimidated about if you bring only the truth, and I am sure you would!

It is good to surround oneself with intelligent people, just as playing Chess against an inferior opponent will not make you any better. It is important to keep in mind, though, that pure perspective can neither be right or wrong, so fresh perspectives are always good regardless of whether or not there is a difference in knowledge between two people. Slots are a good example for me. There are many who say, "The ER of Slots is poor, and I find them mindless, so I don't know why people like this particular machine," then I come in with, "I love Slots, and I can tell you that the draw of this machine is..."

Besides, everyone has at least one piece of actual knowledge that someone else does not. Perhaps not about a specific subject, but in general...

Similarly, there are no dumb points of view. Incorrect facts, maybe, but everyone's entitled to voice their own opinion.

At AT&T, on midnights, I would sometime have to call out a repairman. This was before everything was computerized.
Nothing like having an outdated call-out list and waking a woman up at 3 am and asking to speak to her dead husband !

My absences are mainly due to work. Being the general dogsbody, or bitch, for the casino means I generally pick up extra things to keep me busy.

Also with Vegas being a expensive trip, sometimes I just dont wanna think about a place I cant visit for a while.

But it's nice to see you back around here, Croupier. You had a really extended absence -- something like five posts in ten months, and you were missed.

The wizard of England also disappeared right in the middle of his black sheep game,
Which had a lot of interest, and made his disappearance more noticeable and unfortunate

On a side note, I went ahead and PM'd WizardofEngland since his absence is the one that started this particular thread. Hopefully he will respond that all is well with him!

Update:

It's been over a month since I sent the PM to WizardofEngland, and it is still showing that the PM has not yet been opened by him.

His absence may forever remain a mystery.
You serious, Clark?

Yeah, according to WizardOfEngland's profile page, his last visit was June 9, 2012. Strange....

Has anyone heard from EvenBob? He's been gone for two weeks which is not like him. I hope everything is okay.

I don't think it is a coincidence he disappeared right when Obama won. He is probably embarrassed for having predicted a Romney landslide for months. If he returns I promise to just give him a gentle ribbing and then move onto other subjects, but I speak only for myself.

Keyser hasn't posted since Election Day either.

They really should just move on and get back to whatever they posted non-politically. But I guess it's possible that they got so engrossed into arguing about the election this year that it became their biggest source of entertainment on this forum, so they left when it did. :(

EB had several gallons of vodka in his bunker, I assume he's been nursing them for quite some time.

At least I hope so. I hate that he's not here, I miss the ol' codger.

Keyser has still not made payment arrangements with me, the time has come (two weeks) for me to send a PM...

He might be in temporary hiding for this reason. I was very upset at the election loss but have not gone into hiding over such a thing in my life and did not intend to start now. I even had to post a bit from my iPhone to show I was not hiding out because I did not have good laptop access.

Lets see them come back--someone besides me needs to represent the right here.

I was all over Romney too, but I moved on and accept the will of the people and will just worker at paying less in taxes (legally).

He's possibly bankrupt if he spread as much as he said he was going to on the markets in his "sure thing".

I'm a little worried about Evenbob, I don't think he could stay away.

Has anybody seen him lurking in the "visited today" list? if so I would feel better

I used to really enjoy many of EvenBob"s posts.
He seemed to become shrill and aggressive about the election.
I will not miss his political tirades.
It seems that many anti obama people are struggling
To continue to hope for his failure
but somehow separate that from appearing to hope for america to fail.

It is not hard to seperate at all. I hope Obama fails because I beleive his agenda to be dangerous and just bad for the USA. Obamacare is just the first and biggest way. He has many other things he would like to see implemented such as "comporable worth" requiring you to say pay the woman who answers the phones the same as the guy who is a service tech, despite that they are different jobs with different skill levels and different hiring conditions. I believe his agenda to be a socialist disaster in the making.

It is not that we also "want America to fail." It is that we see what he wants and know how it will work out given the past. Raise taxes and you get a slowing economy. The 1950s are an example. People say, "we taxes at a top rate of 91% and had a great economy then!" What they miss is in the early 1950s we were still selling into a world market devastated by WWII. By 1957 the world had rebuilt enough to the point they needed to buy far less and there was a "Great Recession" in 1958. This led to the "JFK tax cuts for the rich" and a boom in the 1960s.

Yes, I will survive Obama, but I prefer when we thrive under the likes of Reagan, Bush, and Bush.
