I'm only getting about 1 scam cell call every few weeks. It's usually the one where they're telling me somebody has accessed my social security number.
Quote: billryanThere was a chain upstate, around Glen Falls, that had three or four attendants dressed like ice cream men who would descend on your car. One guy cleaning windshields, another checking oil, another pumping gas. They had some sort of promo where if they didn't get it all done in a certain time, it was all free or something.
We'd only get there once every couple of years but it was fascinating.
Texaco had a similar setup at the 1965 NY Worlds Fair.
Sounds like you're describing Mobil - I vaguely remember at one point that Mobil had some sort of "home game" where you had 10 seconds to move plastic gas attendants from inside the station to your car.

because they have selective memories.
I remember all the crappy stuff too.

Not exactly right. "THE" Marlboro Man, who died in 2014, never smoked, one of those ironies. However, there were other Marlboro Men who were necessary because the original 14 years-of-it guy decided to quit making the commercials. He felt it was a bad example to his kids.Quote: lilredroosterthe Marlboro man - a real cigarette for a real man - he died of lung cancer
The perfect irony is ruined because latter-day M. Men did smoke and evidently some died from cigarettes.
Another irony, though, is that THE M. Man of 14 years did die of COPD. My wife, btw, says the only people she actually knew personally that got lung cancer were all people who never smoked.

What amazes people is Marlboro was introduced as a woman's cigarette at first. The brown filter was to hide lipstick. It did not get popular until the cowboy image thing.
When I was a kid all the kids who smoked smoked Marlboros. Herd mentality.

There is always parts of the past we prefer. I wish casinos were more like the past than today. I wish I could have went to the Sands during the Rat Pack era. I wish casinos were more the size of back then than the Disneyland size if today. I do not care much for all the new features on cars, and I hate the infotainment screens. Give me the 2000s cars for the most part.
I wish people took time to dress better as they did in the past. I wish TV News would get it done in 30-60 minutes like they did in the 80s.
Fast food tasted way better in the 70s.

"Now"? Other than 1984 - mainly because only two new buildings were needed, and, IIRC, they are still being used (the natatorium is now USC's home pool; the velodrome was constructed so it could be moved, and it was, to the USOC training center in Colorado Springs) - what summer Olympics didn't lose money for the host? How long did it take Montreal to finally pay off 1976?

Not all of them - when was the last time you saw judo, or (team) handball, on ESPN, or anywhere other than the Olympic Channel for that matter?
And even this is relatively new; as recently as 1996, sports like judo and field hockey were lucky to get seconds of coverage on NBC. Even when NBC tried its "triplecast" in 1992, some sports were ignored, and, in fact, when Ahmad Rashad appeared on The Tonight Show to shill it, he used the fact that some sports wouldn't be aired as a selling point.

there is an Apple store in the mall - it opens at 9 a.m. - every single morning - even on a Wednesday in February - there is a line to get into the store

I take your point, but it is getting progressively worse. IOC, like a movie studio, keeps taking a bigger and bigger slice. The TV facilities the host must build alone get bigger and bigger. Remember how people were hoping Chicago would lose their bid for whatever year games they pitched for? I remember being one of the few to cheer when NYC was cut from the "quarterfinals" meaning they would not be the USA city to bid. People thought I was nuts, I asked if they knew the cost.
We might eventually get to a rotation for the Winter Games at least. That would be smart given the limited number of potential hosts. For the summer the USA needs to get smart and bow out.

I agree that you rarely realize an "era" and when you do it is something that is ending the era. But other than the smoke I would prefer that era to the cattle-car that is today in Vegas.

One of the effects of pot is you
can't see what it's doing to your
life. You think you're doing fine,
it's only when you quit entirely
that you can see what's wrong.
Willie Nelson could smoke it

career has been on automatic
for decades. He has people
that did everything for him,
all he had to do was be pointed
at the stage and sing once
in awhile. Most people aren't
that lucky.

Quote: RigondeauxRemember when people believed all the ridiculous propaganda about pot?
Don't need propaganda to know that it slows you down. The more you do it the slower you get. Regular users get like the are listening to a radio broadcast on a 3 second delay. Getting high takes over their life and any ambition goes up in smoke. Slowly but surely they degrade into jobs where they can function.

See, here is the thing. We are having an intelligent conversation here. Intelligent people are able to and do talk in general terns. One or a few exceptions does not change the general thing.
Should I or should I not leave out the "since it's been legal in NV" which would indicate he has only used it a few years at most. Assuming he was not a regular user before decriminalization, then your statement is void right there.
But lets talk in generalities. Most of us have known of "that guy who smoked 3 packs of Luckies a day for 40 years and was fine!" He died falling off his roof or some other accident, but the smoking never bothered him. Are you going to come on a forum and say cigarettes are not harmful? Maybe just recommend people smoke Lucky Strikes? After all, It's Toasted!
I highly doubt you will do that. Most regular users I have known have lives that fall somewhere between "disaster" to "never going anywhere." The former keep losing jobs to their habit, the later are still sitting around listening to the same music giggling stupid with the same pothead friends as if time stands still even as it goes by,
The USA is on her way to being what China was during the Opium period. Expect similar results.

Speaking only in generalities based on limited personal anecdotes removes any nuance from the conversation.
You are also building a strawman here - at what point did I claim that it’s impossible for Marijuana to ever be harmful?
Inhaling burning plant matter is not good for your lungs. The big difference between cigarettes and Marijuana is the amount of burning plant that is smoked by the average user. Most cigarette smokers are sucking down 1/2-1 pack a day. Studies with tobacco have shown that moderate use common with cigar or pipe smokers, in the range of 1 cigar daily, does not increase risk of cancer by any significant amount. If someone is smoking 10-20 joints a day then I agree that they have a problem.
But in any case, smoking is not the only way to consume cannabis. Many people use edibles, which makes the entire comparison to tobacco a moot point.
It comes down to causation vs correlation. Anything can be abused. Cheeseburgers and Coca-Cola can be abused. That does not mean that anyone who drinks a soda is spiraling into a pit of diabetes.
I have no doubt you can correlate Marijuana use to unemployed deadbeats. Same goes for alcohol. But claiming moderate MJ/Alcohol use is causative of that behavior is patently false.
I can’t safely comment on the issue of legality without risking political discussion. I don’t even know what to say about your comparison of Cannabis to Opioids other than its absurd and shows how mis-informed you are on this subject.
