I am more of a strip casino guy and have never stayed downtown.
I normally enjoy the sights and sounds of the strip as I do not have to just play blackjack all day…I can go sightseeing and visit the Forum Shops, Bellagio water show, etc.
I also enjoy the strip restaurants (i.e. Grimaldi's pizza at the Palazzo, Javier's at Aria, Bacchanal buffet and Del Monico at Venetian)
So, I welcome all of your thoughts, pro and con, for taking a chance on this offer.
For what it's worth GN has a blackjack game with a strong side bet, that actually is one of my better generating EV games. It probably is too low limit a game for your tastes though.
And for what it's worth, Ace: Don't remind us that you are an attorney. Don't make it harder to like you than it already is. lol
Quote: DRichTheir Spa Suites facing the pool are very nice. They are two story with large living and dining rooms. The bedroom is upstairs it has a separate jacuuzi and a nice steam shower. Bonus: some, if not all, have mirrored slats on the ceiling over the bed. I liked it, it's not as cheesey as it sounds.
I suppose it is better if you have someone to join you in the jacuzzi
Quote: kewljIs there some sort of rule where if you are staying downtown, you can't visit the strip and vise versa?

kewljj I thought it was a good running joke as there was a thread I was ranting about something attorneys have to deal with and some people had no idea I was an attorney
At LEAST once!
It is, by far, the nicest and most upscale property Downtown.
Ask for a RUSH Tower Suite. All Non-Smoking Tower.
Stay a few days Downtown and feel the vibe.
It's totally different from the Strip but in a good way.
Enjoy!
Quote: ten2winI would most definitely take them up on this one.

I was just reading on trip advisor that the Rush tower rooms are already outdated and people complained about the a/c not working…
I know I shouldn't look a gift horse int he mouth but if I am going all the way to Vegas, I want to ensure my accommodations are top notch
There's a little Middle Eastern restaurant down there that I really enjoyed the last time I was on Fremont St. - Kabob Korner?
You can always take a cab (or The Deuce for that matter) out to the strip.
Quote: TerribleTomFree night in a suite? Why not? I like the downtown area a lot, especially for the gaming.

Free however many nights I want and a limo available to me if I want to go anywhere else.
I love the GN, I think it is quaint and has some real upswing, especially if you are getting RFB. Get a nice suite and look around downtown. There are some things to see, the Neon Museum, The Mob Meseum (I think is totally worth it) also the Smith Center isn't too far away. The building is beautiful.
If you don't like it, you make arrangements and head to Aria, no harm no foul.
Sometimes we have the best times when we step out of our confort zones!
Quote: aceofspadesA good friend of mine just became an executive host at the GN in LV. He wants me to stay there in a suite, RFB.

I'm with you. I go to Vegas for a vacation. I want to be on the strip. I will often visit downtown once or twice while I am there, but the strip is where all the action is and it's where I want to stay.
Every time I have ever stayed off-strip, I have regretted it. I used to do it when I was trying to save money, and it never worked, because I spent more in cab fare to and from the strip than I saved on the rooms.
Aren't you always comped when you stay on the strip anyway? So what's the difference?

Still trying to figure out how anyone could possibly say no to an offer like that.
I'd take as much time as my schedule allowed and didn't leave me feeling like I was being piggishly greedy with my friend's generous offer. 3-4-5 nights, maybe?
Quote: TerribleTomStill trying to figure out how anyone could possibly say no to an offer like that.
I'd say no because I'd rather be on the strip.
I'm essentially RFB anyway. Not quite unlimited, but it's never a problem unless I party REALLY hard and run up bar tabs in the thousands. A couple of hundred at the steak house is no problem. And, I think, Ace gets better offers than I do.

My point is, he can go to the strip anytime. If he doesn't find a room at Aria, he can go to MB or MGM Grand or any other property and they will gladly give him a room. Why not try something different? At least you have gone downtown and you now know what you like and dislike. Ace hasn't tried that before. I don't think he is going to make downtown his new base of operations but surely one or two nights cannot hurt?

The first time I stayed in the Spa Suites they were nice but definitely outdated. The next few times the ones I had were updated and very nice. If you decide to take them up on it, definitely ask your host for an updated one (they may all be updated by now).
Quote: aceofspadesWhen I met up with the WIZARD downtown, that was my only time ever there. It just looked dilapidated - although when he showed me around the GN, it was quite nice, but it seems so small compared to the Strip - a bit claustrophobic and a feeling of there being "nowhere to go"
Downtown isn't for everyone. After reading your posts, you probably shouldn't stay downtown. Its all good. Different strokes for different folks.
You seem to have a certain expectation of all the finer things in life. That's cool. In some ways I envy your lifestyle.
But.
I personally love downtown. But then we are different people. You probably drive a luxury car to work, me, I ride a bicycle(this a choice, not a necessity).
Dilapidated to you is character to me. Small to you, short walks to me. Feeling of "nowhere to go", wow. I rarely have that feeling but when in Vegas, I never have that feeling.
Quote: IbeatyouracesAnd this coming from someone in the New York area???
What I mean is - on the strip I can take the monorail or just pop over to Caesar's and walk around the Forum Shops - people watch, celebrity watch - whereas downtown there is nothing but the casinos and the street people
Quote: FinsRuleWhat's the alternative offer to the GN?
Aria

Sounds to me like you have already made up your mind :)

What I mean by that it - when I am on the Strip say, at Aria, I always feel I can walk across the street and experience some new attraction or walk to the newly opened LinQ or the Forum Shops. If I want to see a show I can choose many in walking distance - I never really need a cab - I am more than happy to walk up and down the strip for an afternoon people watching.
Downtown seems so, FINAL, as a destination.
Sure, the limo is available but how many times am I going to want a ride to the strip to just "walk around"
I think a few members mentioned staying ½ the week at GN and ½ at Aria - that sounds like a good plan and I might actually do that.
The vibe downtown is also unique; especially in the evening out on the street in the FSE. The one time I avoid the street is early in the a.m. - that is when the street folks are most noticeable.
Give it a try.

How's that? So many casinos so close to one another! I bet if you spread your normal action for one House around (and Downtown has good Rules, most places) you'd get a bunch of good offers from everywhere. I can't imagine someone turning their nose up at an immaculate Downtown Grand room, having been there, great view and a gorgeous room. Even the D has some nice rooms, don't know what their more expensive ones look like.

If you can get RFB at Aria, do it. Easy decision.

What is the crowd like at the GN?

I don't know, asking the wrong guy I'm afraid. I don't really hang out in there, except for the occasional Ultimate X vulture check. I think I played Craps in there once in December and got admonished for short-rolling three rolls in, so left. The buffet is really good, I did eat the buffet there in December. It seems like it is generally pretty quiet in there.
I think you would like the Dancing Dealers at either The D or Golden Gate, that's right up your alley. The BJ Rules are good at both of those places, too. The music at The D might be a bit loud for you if you are trying to count, unless you can count already with loud music around you, first floor is the loudest pit I have ever experienced. It looks like they may be putting in a few BJ tables on the Vintage Vegas floor, and that floor is really quiet.
Like I said, I'd try to show Downtown Grand some action while you're there, ask them if you can see one of the rooms, I think you'll find it very nice and wouldn't mind getting some offers from them.
I'll make you a deal: I'm going to Vegas in February or March of next year and I earn the MyVegas points on Facebook for MLIFE casinos. I could use those points for rooms. I'm so confident you will enjoy Downtown that you give me one night staying Downtown, and in turn, I will stay one night on the Strip...and I promise not to bus Downtown at all that day...I won't even say the word, "Downtown."
Quote: IbeatyouracesStay for the offer, play elsewhere.
What about high limit room?
The Rush tower, where I stayed, was nice enough. I don't recall having any complaints with the room. I've stayed at the Venetian a few times since so I'm spoiled now.
To me, the main gaming floor of the GN was too smoky. I can't speak to the air in the high limit room. If that's an issue (and I don't know if it is) a host can usually make accommodations.
My advice: he's a friend so take him up on the offer and give him your honest thoughts afterwards. You'll both come out ahead.

What about the Hideout pool - nobody under 16 allowed - supposed to be quieter and more relaxing
Quote: aceofspadesWhat are the BJ conditions at the GN?
Main floor- 3:2, H17, DOA, DAS, RSA, LS. Pen 4.5/6, $10 min
Double-deck game sucks- no DAS.
Also... be a good friend to yourself! You like the Strip. There are any number of reasons for it, you don't have to itemize them. Its a fact that you like the strip.
Whether you might enjoy downtown in general and GN in particular is undetermined, but you know you do like the strip. When you think "Vegas" you think of the Strip.
As to the GN, the only reason you might consider it is that Guinness is comped there... or atleast it used to be but there were alot of changes there and I don't even know if they still even serve Guinness much less comp it there.
So I would say, thank your friend but decline his very generous offer.
Quote: djatcThe high limit "room" is an enclosed area in the middle of the casino. To be completely honest ace you're playing at a level where you'll be taken care of on the strip, so I don't know how much more downtown can offer you aside from RFB.
Hmm it seems the Strip is getting a tad stingy these days - no limo to airport this trip!
I'm asking as I know aceofspades prefers a S17 game (as anyone who plays at his limits should, of course).

You may take the Deuce bus for $2!!!!
Hahaha, AoS on the bus. There's no way that happens. Take a picture of yourself on the bus, I got $10 for you if you take the bus to the airport!!!

Not on the main floor. I don't know about HL room though.
