Please have a look at my new article on Downtown Summerlin. I have lived in this part of Vegas for 13 years now and have been hearing the entire time about how this area was zoned for a big mall. They started construction in 2009, I think, but it got mothballed when the Vegas real estate market collapsed. However, they finally resumed construction and it opened last week. Still a lot of construction workers milling about and stores and restaurants that aren't ready to open their doors.

This part of town is my stomping ground. Although you're unlikely to see me shopping, if you do, please say "hello."

They don't have bike racks in logical places, like actually outside the restaurants. They are only in the parking deck and the movie theater from what I have seen and heard. That is a major oversight they need to address, especially considering the regional bike path right across 215 from it. People were locking bikes up to anything grounded in the restaurant row like handicap parking signs and outside tables.

The sidewalk and crosswalk connectivity along the Sahara side's parking lots is very poor. One side of the road has no crosswalk across the entrance from Sahara. The sidewalk on the other side does not extend from one side to the other. You either have to walk through a pile of rocks or through cactus to get from one side to the other.

At least I'm not the only one annoyed by the lack of bike racks in Vegas. I must admit I drove to DT Summerlin, as I had Mrs. Wizard with me. When I can't find a bike rack I'll usually use the first convenient tree I find.

I agree it would be nice if there was easy access from the Beltway bike trail.

I know a lot of folks that love 5 Guys burgers. I prefer Smashburger.

This doesn't surprise me with the beginning of the report. It does look like a nice place though! Not tons of other people there though...

I assume the ones that prefer 5 Guys over Smashburger either:

1) Never tried Smashburger. And in Vegas you can get this beer at Smashburger for $3.50 (at the Premium Outlets -South location). A steal if you like Double/Imperial IPAs (bar retail is close to double this)!

2) Love 5 Guys cajun fries. These really can't be beat.

Check out the kid with the black shirt in the background at the opening of Downtown Summerlin. Wish I could dance like that. I'd settle for 5% as well.

Small nitpick: an arroyo is more properly a ditch or a gully through which a stream or creek would flow. I don't think that makes a "dining arroyo" any more reasonable.

Explored the area yesterday and reminds me of Premium Outlets North. Really like the layout and design of Downtown Summerlin. A movie theater, Regal Downtown Summerlin 5 is located here which is great plus Red Rock is nearby.
