OMG that reminded me of an old joke. I will tell it to lighten the mood.
Jesus was tasked with watching the gates to heaven.
A man approached and Jesus asked him to tell a bit about his life to see if he could be admitted.
The man said "Well, My son was born under a great star in the sky and I taught my son to be a carpenter just like myself."
Shocked, Jesus replied, "Really? Tell me more about your son."
The man replied, "Well, My son died but then he came back to life."
Jesus stretched forward in amazement. "Father?"
The man replied,

even if legendary is not a great choice of words - his journalism career was quite impressive
he worked with 2 giants of journalism - Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather as indicated in this article from MSN news
I have at least some respect and admiration for anyone who went that far in that field - it's not at all easy to get hired into positions such as that
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/kcal9-reporter-alan-mendelson-dies-at-70/ar-AA141bdL
.
Consider this. Alan worked for CBS Evening News and had the potential to become an anchor reporter following Dan Rather. He was a good looking guy who resembled Brad Pitt, and who knows what might have happened if he had stayed behind Dan Rather and paid his dues? Perhaps he had to move on from CBS Evening News because he was gambling?

He got married at a craps table. Is that something casinos allow non-high rollers to do?

I seem to remember a post of his stating he had won and lost millions (in the $3 million range). He posted that he had won $100,000 Royals, four, I think. He got lots of comps for his efforts. Perhaps the Wizard could further enlighten us as to his gambling efforts and habits.

Casinos consider people who play $25 denomination VP a high roller. You are potentially putting in over 100k an hour in action. At one time he certainly was a high roller.Quote: JackSpadeQuote: tuttigymSort of rhetorical: I wonder what his remainder estate looked like? He was a newscaster in the LA area at the network affiliate for 15+ years, a feat, impressive by industry standards.
RIP
I never directly interacted with him, but I enjoyed reading his posts, he was always well-written, eloquent, and had unique takes (especially on craps which is not a game that I know much about).
I also have massive respect for people who come onto online forums with their real name (and even profile photo), which is very rare (especially on this site) (in fact he may be the only one to have used his full name and photo), so that alone gets massive respect from me.
I wish his family and friends well.
Feisty, provocative, occasionally a bit inane: I'll miss him.
What more fitting memorial to this unique gambler than to repost the pic of him marrying at his favorite craps table at Caesars?
R.I.P., Alan, and if heaven's gatekeeper tells you there's only one way to get to heaven, argue back that actually there are eighteen.

I don't think the Jewish version of heaven would have Saint Peter as the gatekeeper. Most Jews don't see the afterlife as a gated community you must pass muster to enter.

Anyone hear anything about a memorial service?

Isn't 11 months to mourn kind of long? When I die, it would be nice to be mourned for a couple weeks, but then I'd want my loved ones to move on with their lives.

The maximum delay is three days and that's for family to gather.
Within 24 hours is preferred.
Unless my rabbi who buried both my parents lied to me.
And a seven day mourning period called sitting Shiva is the common length of time.

I imagine the different sects observe things differently, but children are supposed to mourn their parents for eleven months. As I understand it, others are not mourned for that long.
My college fraternity's nickname was The Fighting McHebes, as the founding brothers were Irish and Jewish kids who couldn't get into the very WASPish fraternities. It was interesting going from knowing hardly any Jewish people to being brothers with dozens of them in a few short weeks.

What constitutes mourning? Actual active practices, or just keeping your parents in your mind and heart while you go about your business?

Sitting Shiva is pretty intense. You basically close yourself off to the world for seven days.
I can't imagine anyone doing that for eleven months. It wouldn't even be practical.

I don’t know the exact details, but the ‘intense’ mourning is only for the week. You can do most normal activities the rest of the 11 months. I think there are just a bunch of daily prayers during the extended period. The last few funerals/shivas I went to had either a single day or two days of the family ‘sitting shiva’.
As I understand the mourning period, certain family members are semi-official mourners, and their primary responsibility is to say a particular daily prayer for the person. The three or four Jewish funerals I attended were sober affairs with no music. Very different from a NY Irish Wake/Funeral.
Shiva is a week or so, the mourning period is different.
There is a large amount of intermarriage
And even when that is not the case……many pick and choose as to what they feel is appropriate
Quote: WizardWhere does the part about ten Jewish men saying prayers come into it?

At the funeral, ten or more Jewish men offer up a prayer. If they don't have ten Jewish men, they skip it.
I believe the ten men are needed for other religious activities but those I know nothing of. Comparative religion wasn't big in my fraternity and many Jewish brothers joined us on our semi-annual Christmas Caroling.

That is called a ‘minyan’. For the service to ‘count’ you need a minyan. Imagine the rabbi arriving at 4pm at the house and finding less than the required number of men! It happened in 1974 in Bayside, Queens. I was walking home from basketball, shorts and a T shirt, with a friend. A few men who looked like religious Jews asked me and Perry if we were Jewish, and asked if we could spare a few minutes to ‘make’ the minyan. So we did!

Thanks! That happened on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, where Larry was walking with Bill Buckner. The other eight were evidently huge Red Sox fans and they refused to let Buckner participate, over the incident where the ball bounced between his legs in game six of the World Series against the Mets.
