I, like many others, didn't see eye to eye with Alan on many things, we certainly had our online battles and I gave him the business many times.

I have said it before, and it deserves repeating. I respected and admired his interesting career.

It sucks he's gone, things here won't be the same without him.

He definitely deserves legendary status.

OMG that reminded me of an old joke. I will tell it to lighten the mood.

Jesus was tasked with watching the gates to heaven.

A man approached and Jesus asked him to tell a bit about his life to see if he could be admitted.

The man said "Well, My son was born under a great star in the sky and I taught my son to be a carpenter just like myself."

Shocked, Jesus replied, "Really? Tell me more about your son."

The man replied, "Well, My son died but then he came back to life."

Jesus stretched forward in amazement. "Father?"

The man replied,
Pinocchio?

When I originally saw ChumpChange's post on page 1 of this thread, I also thought it was an inappropriate attempt at humor. But we moderators all try to give you guys as much free rein as possible to have your conversations. So, it's not against the forum rules to be inappropriate, so don't expect moderators to enforce a 'code of manners' above and beyond the 'No Personal Insults' and 'No Profanity" rules.

However, that ViennaPizza post was so terrible that we immediately made an exception, as Wizard explained when he announced VP's suspension.

even if legendary is not a great choice of words - his journalism career was quite impressive

he worked with 2 giants of journalism - Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather as indicated in this article from MSN news

I have at least some respect and admiration for anyone who went that far in that field - it's not at all easy to get hired into positions such as that

Alan Mendelson had previously worked for the CBS Evening News as an assignment desk correspondent under Walter Conkrite and Dan Rather. He became close to the two news broadcasting titans who were mentoring him. But he switched to local news because he wanted to be in front of the camera.

Consider this. Alan worked for CBS Evening News and had the potential to become an anchor reporter following Dan Rather. He was a good looking guy who resembled Brad Pitt, and who knows what might have happened if he had stayed behind Dan Rather and paid his dues? Perhaps he had to move on from CBS Evening News because he was gambling?

Casinos consider people who play $25 denomination VP a high roller. You are potentially putting in over 100k an hour in action. At one time he certainly was a high roller.

Alan, played the high limit video poker for a few years and was well comped at LV Caesars (NYE, Celine tixs, suite, rfb, $1000+ fp). My impression is that he would give back the VP wins to craps. I do not know his level at the craps table. He said he never had a winning year, but reading between the lines, that was for his ex'es to read ( something a few ex posters failed to comprehend). Well versed in Total Rewards/7 stars program.
He was a newscaster in the LA area at the network affiliate for 15+ years, a feat, impressive by industry standards.

R.I.P.

I never directly interacted with him, but I enjoyed reading his posts, he was always well-written, eloquent, and had unique takes (especially on craps which is not a game that I know much about).

I also have massive respect for people who come onto online forums with their real name (and even profile photo), which is very rare (especially on this site) (in fact he may be the only one to have used his full name and photo), so that alone gets massive respect from me.

I wish his family and friends well.

Feisty, provocative, occasionally a bit inane: I'll miss him.

What more fitting memorial to this unique gambler than to repost the pic of him marrying at his favorite craps table at Caesars?

I don't think the Jewish version of heaven would have Saint Peter as the gatekeeper. Most Jews don't see the afterlife as a gated community you must pass muster to enter.

The maximum delay is three days and that's for family to gather.

Within 24 hours is preferred.

I imagine the different sects observe things differently, but children are supposed to mourn their parents for eleven months. As I understand it, others are not mourned for that long.
My college fraternity's nickname was The Fighting McHebes, as the founding brothers were Irish and Jewish kids who couldn't get into the very WASPish fraternities. It was interesting going from knowing hardly any Jewish people to being brothers with dozens of them in a few short weeks.

I imagine the different sects observe things differently, but children are supposed to mourn their parents for eleven months. As I understand it, others are not mourned for that long.

What constitutes mourning? Actual active practices, or just keeping your parents in your mind and heart while you go about your business?

Sitting Shiva is pretty intense. You basically close yourself off to the world for seven days.

I can't imagine anyone doing that for eleven months. It wouldn't even be practical.

I don’t know the exact details, but the ‘intense’ mourning is only for the week. You can do most normal activities the rest of the 11 months. I think there are just a bunch of daily prayers during the extended period. The last few funerals/shivas I went to had either a single day or two days of the family ‘sitting shiva’.

The Jewish tradition is very different from Christian ones. I've been to enough of them to be confused.

As I understand the mourning period, certain family members are semi-official mourners, and their primary responsibility is to say a particular daily prayer for the person. The three or four Jewish funerals I attended were sober affairs with no music. Very different from a NY Irish Wake/Funeral.

Shiva is a week or so, the mourning period is different.

Where does the part about ten Jewish men saying prayers come into it?

A great many Jews do not follow the ancient traditions

There is a large amount of intermarriage

And even when that is not the case……many pick and choose as to what they feel is appropriate
the foolish sayings of a rich man often pass for words of wisdom by the fools around him

At the funeral, ten or more Jewish men offer up a prayer. If they don't have ten Jewish men, they skip it.

I believe the ten men are needed for other religious activities but those I know nothing of. Comparative religion wasn't big in my fraternity and many Jewish brothers joined us on our semi-annual Christmas Caroling.

Alan's obituary is here, at the ReviewJournal
https://obituaries.reviewjournal.com/obituary/alan-mendelson-1086678915

The obituary is abbreviated compared to some of the articles about him posted online.

I saw a notice about a memorial for him that was scheduled for last Thursday, November 17th, but I can't find the notice online now.

Thanks and I mean that genuinely.

You appear the only WOV poster who took the time to find the info.

I just found the memorial notice again too. It's a week past. I was actually considering going to it, but I thought it might be awkward having never actually met the man or his family, especially if it turned out to be a small service.

His daughter is an actress and has done some roles. It was on her twitter feed that I found the memorial notice after a google search of Alan's name.

That is called a ‘minyan’. For the service to ‘count’ you need a minyan. Imagine the rabbi arriving at 4pm at the house and finding less than the required number of men! It happened in 1974 in Bayside, Queens. I was walking home from basketball, shorts and a T shirt, with a friend. A few men who looked like religious Jews asked me and Perry if we were Jewish, and asked if we could spare a few minutes to ‘make’ the minyan. So we did!

Thanks! That happened on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, where Larry was walking with Bill Buckner. The other eight were evidently huge Red Sox fans and they refused to let Buckner participate, over the incident where the ball bounced between his legs in game six of the World Series against the Mets.
