This Week in Gambling: Could Las Vegas casinos close again? 5 August 2021

Last week saw the return of Las Vegas casino restrictions where employees had to wear masks indoors. This week's gambling news finds Nevada following the CDC recommendations, meaning tourists at Vegas casinos must also wear masks. Will social distancing and capacity restrictions follow? And could a Las Vegas closure actually happen again?

In our last episode of This Week in Gambling we told you that a Las Vegas face masks mandate had been reinstated… but only for casino employees and others working indoors and around the public.We also stated, however, that the situation was fluid and could change at any moment. Today is that moment.

Nevada Governor Sisolak has signed an Emergency Directive which rolls things back to May, and makes face masks mandatory for all individuals (whether employee or tourist) to wear face masks starting July 30th. This directive comes in the midst of the latest wave of infections from the new “Delta Variant” of Coronavirus. Nearly 1,000 people in Nevada have recently tested positive for COVID-19, which is the highest daily total since late January.

Although Las Vegas face masks have returned, there has not yet been any comment on social distancing or casino capacity restrictions. Obviously, all that could change at any time. A Las Vegas closure has not been discussed yet, but last week no one was discussing making tourists wear masks. Stay with us for more Las Vegas Covid information.

Gaming revenue sets new record for third time in 2021
Maryland (results) - Rege Behe, CDC Gaming Reports - Gamblers in Maryland continue to wager record amounts at the state’s six casinos. The state’s gaming operators combined to generate a monthly record of $180.1 million in revenue during July. The July revenue total represents an increase of $40.2 million, or 28.7%, compared to July 2020…MGM National Harbor with $72.3 million in revenue. Live! Casino in Anne Arundel generated $62.9 million in revenue. Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino also saw a significant increase over July 2020, bringing in $19.3 million, a 22.4% jump. Standard Blackjack rules unchanged other than as set out below:

* Player’s 21-point is an automatic win. Pays 1 to 1.

1. Each Player makes both a Main-Bet and a Power-Bet (Odds-Win) equal to half his Main-Bet.

2. Each Player receives two cards Face-up and the Dealer receives two cards with one Face-up.

3. If the Player’s two-card hand total is Even (e.g. 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16...), then his Power-Bet (Odds-Win) loses; Otherwise it remains in play.

4. After the Odds-Win wager is resolved.
​If the player’s 2-Card hand is a hard Total of 14 to 18. He/She may Swap his hand for a new-hand (i.e. replace his two-card hand with two new cards).
* Note: If the player’s Swap-Hand is a Blackjack, it will count as a natural Blackjack. Pays 3 to 2.

5. After this decision, the Player plays their hand as normal.
* Note: If the Player splits their hand after the swap, the Odds-Win wager remains with the first splits-hand.

6. The Odds-Win wager is resolved in the following way:
a. If the Player wins on his hand, his Odds-Win Wager (if any) wins 2 to 1.

The Atlanta Falcons stand at a 7-game over/under as of April 2021. But are they a good bet for the over, or are you wiser betting the under?

The Falcons have certainly struggled in recent years to hit the over if we’re looking at recent history. Over the past two seasons, they have gone 7-9 and 4-12. And now, the team has a new coach, a new regime, and a new direction.

They’re in certain rebuilding mode, even if quarterback Matt Ryan is still the man in the driver’s seat. However, they have recently traded Julio Jones. And they also have a lot of holes to fill.

Ryan can lead this young Falcons team to overachieve and perhaps scrape an 8-9 record. And he also has help coming from rookie Kyle Pitts.

Let’s see if it will be enough.

State of the Atlanta Falcons
Without Julio Jobes, the Falcons have two phenomenal pass catchers in Calvin Ridley and rookie Kyle Pitts. Say what you will about Pitts having not played a single down in the NFL. It’s irrelevant. Pitts was one of the highest-rated draft prospects at his position of all time, and if it wasn’t for Trevor Lawrence, odds are he’d have been the highest rated player in the draft...

Strengths of the Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons offense will always threaten with Matt Ryan in charge at quarterback. Ryan, despite his status as an aging veteran, still produces at a high level. And with names like Calvin Ridley and Kyle Pitts, expect him to continue to put up gaudy numbers even with Jones’ departure...

This Week in Gambling: US online gambling via tribal gaming? 12 August 2021

This week's video and gambling news focuses on how U.S. online gambling could be expanding in states with tribal gaming, much like the arrangement between the state of Florida and the Seminole Tribe. Congressmen from New York and California are supporting a bill to allow Tribal Gaming casinos within states to operate online gambling websites. And the details of that bill are pretty exciting.

When the state of Florida reached an agreement with the Seminole Tribe, no one expected the fallout could result in US online gambling expansion. And while there is still a long way to go to make it happen, that path is an interesting one.

The Floridian compact with the Seminoles would allow them to take mobile sports bets from anyone within the state, even if they were not located on Tribal property. That bill has led to a federal lawsuit, but while we wait to see how that plays out, some in the US Congress are taking matters into their own hands.

Representative Lou Correa of California and Representative John Katko of New York have sponsored a bipartisan bill that would “…remove Federal barriers regarding the offering of mobile wagers on Indian lands when the applicable State and Indian Tribe have reached an agreement.”

The legal definition of where an online bet takes place has no legal precedent. If the bets placed online are legal defined as occurring where the servers are located, then any Tribal casino with servers located on their land could accept US Online Gambling bets from anyone in the state.
