Indiana Sports Betting Hits Record $207 Million In Wagers
Indiana (sports) - Matthew Waters, Legal Sports Report - If returns out of Indiana and Iowa are any indication, the US sports betting industry is in for a big month. Both states saw record handle last month as NFL betting was thrown into the mix of NBA and NHL playoff games as well as the last month of the MLB regular season. This Week in Gambling: The battle of US sports betting supremacy

The war for U.S. sports betting domination has begun, and with over $150 billion in annual revenue up for grabs, the stakes are high. This week, the first shots were fired in what is sure to be a long and hard fought battle.

Caesars Entertainment is in talks to buy William Hill in a deal that would value the British bookmaker at $3.7 billion and underscore the size of the opportunity in online gaming and U.S. sports betting.

The companies said that the casino operator could offer $3.45 per William Hill share, an 81% premium to the stock's average price over the three months to 24 September. The deal would give Caesars control of their U.S. joint venture. William Hill says it has a 32% share of revenue in the Nevada sports betting market, and it is rapidly expanding into other states.

Sports betting was already booming in the United States before the pandemic hit, after the US Supreme Court in 2018 cleared the way for it to be legalized in states outside Nevada. While lockdowns severely disrupted large sports events, the months long shutdown of casinos helped boost demand for online gambling, buoying stocks such as DraftKings and Flutter Entertainment. Las Vegas casinos reopened in June.

The American Gaming Association expects nearly 35 million people to bet on the NFL this season.

Iowa hits monthly record of sports betting

September was the strongest month of the year for hotel bookings, according to AAA, though it still trailed September 2019 by 12 percent. Detroit casinos report nearly $88M in revenue for September

Internet gaming helps offset revenue losses in September

Pennsylvania casinos post a 1.1% increase in September
Pennsylvania (results) - Rege Behe, CDC Gaming Reports - The gaming market in Pennsylvania showed a slight increase in total revenues in September 2020 from the previous year. Gaming and fantasy contests took in a total of $284.2 million from gamblers, a 1.1% percent increase from September 2019…Retail slots revenue fell 16% to $157.4 million and retail tables revenue decreased 16% to $59.1 million. While the total handle for sports wagering reached $462.7 million, the taxable revenue from sports wagering dropped to $6.2 million…igaming, which generated $57 million in September 2020. TSA screened 1 million passengers Sunday for first time since March

Huge week for sports betting news in America: The Caesars William Hill buyout for $3.7 billion leads the headlines, while the popular 5Dimes sportsbook based in Costa Rica was busy paying off the U.S. Department of Justice.

Caesars Entertainment has said that it and William Hill have agreed on the terms of a recommended offer for the U.K. betting company that values it at 2.9 billion pounds ($3.73 billion), as announced Monday. This ensures the Caesars William Hill buyout is a done deal.

Under the offer accepting William Hill shareholders will get 272 pence in cash for each share held, a 25% premium to Thursday's closing share price of 217.60 pence, the day before William Hill said that it had received the approach.

A Look at Louisiana's casino market
Louisiana (results) - Timothy Boone, Baton Rouge Advocate - The state’s 14 riverboat casinos, Harrah’s land-based casino and four racinos brought in just over $126 million during September, down 31.3%. Part of the reason for the big year-to-year drop was the damage done by Hurricane Laura to the lucrative Lake Charles market. Revenue in Lake Charles was off by 64.9% from nearly $62.2 million to $21.8 million…Video poker revenue was up 13.4% statewide in September to nearly $54.5 million from $48 million. This Week in Gambling: Will Las Vegas casinos ever return to normal?

Most of Sin City is open, but at limited capacity. And some Las Vegas casinos still remain closed. While the pandemic still rages, some are wondering if and when Vegas will return to normal, or if this is just the new normal.

Other stories include new Las Vegas casinos and a major resort that is reinstating parking fees for some guests.

Yes, many Las Vegas casinos open. But no, a return to a world before Coronavirus is not close. Recently, the owner of the South Point Casino went as far as to say that a full recovery may not come until sometime in 2022.

Michael Gaughan was speaking at a ribbon-cutting event for a new 40,000-square-foot equestrian arena at his resort and said “I’ve been here since 1952 and this is probably the worst thing that’s ever happened…” Casinos were ordered shuttered in mid-March to help curb the spread of the virus, and the state didn’t allow them to start reopening until June 4.

He continued: “I do think that by the start of 2022, Las Vegas casinos should be back to completely normal. I just hope Las Vegas can get back to where it was. Everybody is trying to survive and keep as many working as they can.” A handful of resorts remain closed, and the Encore announced this week that it was ceasing midweek operations because of weak customer demand.

Nevada gaming totals down 22.4% in September

In 2019, the US Department of Justice (under the Trump Administration) "changed their opinion" on the 1961 Federal Wire Act. This law deals with conducting gambling on an interstate basis. Historically, it prohibits only interstate sports betting, but the DOJ’s new position is an attempt to extend it to all forms of online gambling. And let's not forget that one of Donald Trump’s biggest donors is Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson, who has campaigned relentlessly to criminalize online gambling in America.

Reduced hours, new capacity limits at most Illinois casinos

Denmark opens window for new land-based casino licenses
Europe (Denmark) - Phil, G3 Newswire - The Danish Gaming Authority, has opened an application window for operators to apply for land-based casino licenses. The number of available licenses isn’t yet known with the only detail being that licenses will run for ten-years. The deadline for applications is January 29, 2021.
