I have a bet with a friend of mine. Could you please tell me what the correct play for the following hand in Ultimate X JoB 8/6 is:

A♠8♠7♠5♥3♥

I say it is A♠8♠7♠
He says A♠

Who is correct?

First, welcome to the forums.

Secondly, your friend is right =). You can see for yourself with the Wizards online hand calculator.
Playing it correctly means you've already won.

Thank you for your welcome!

Unfortunately, the Wizards online hand calculator does not include Ultimate X that has a different strategy than regular JoB.

Three to the flush is the better play.

At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Yes A87 suited is better because of multiplier potential.

hm.. I would have guessed lone Ace as well.

but it looks like that high multiplier if you get the flush makes it worth it
Craps is paradise (Pair of dice). Lets hear it for the SpeedCount Mathletes :)

I stand corrected for the UltX JoB!
Playing it correctly means you've already won.

I just ran this through an exact calculation and confirmed that the Wiz's strategy, although an approximation, is correct for this case.

The details are: Three to the Flush has an expected value of 0.1275 while holding just the Ace has an EV of -0.2539.

Oops - that was for 3 line. For 10 line the Three to the Flush EV is 0.3911 while the Ace's is -0.8731.

Both sets of numbers are for the minimal multipliers. HOWEVER, if, in the 10 line game, the sum of the current multipliers is 83 or above, then the Ace is the better hold. At a sum of 83, the EV for the Ace is 33.0163 and the 3 to the Flush is 33.0082. At a sum of 120, the Ace EV is 50.1932 and the 3 to the Flush is 49.5401.
