Double-Double, dealt 9 thru K suited for a straight flush. Do you throw the 9 and go for the royal, or take the straight flush. I also understand that you can catch flush/straight/pair if you go for the royal. Thanks!

If you go for the Royal:
1 card (suited Ace) gets the Royal (800)
7 cards (suited 2-8) get a Flush (assume 6)
3 cards (other Aces) get a Straight (4)
9 cards (other Ks, Qs, Js) get Jacks or Better (1)
The other 27 cards get a losing hand
Your mean value = (800 + 6 x 7 + 3 x 4 + 9) / 47 = 18.36, which is far less than the 50 you get for keeping the Straight Flush.

Yes, also the 3 other 9s will get you a straight, so I think the EV for not holding is 18.62, still not close to your pat 50. For fun, I figured you'd need an absurd progressive jackpot of 2,276 to make tossing the 9 worth it. But good luck finding a seat at that 103.2% game!

I got dealt a 9-K of hearts and got ragged on excessively by other pros for wanting to drop the 9.....

but then again maybe I should have since it was $1 5 play, and I ended up with a $1250 handpay.
