I'm heading back to Vegas for 6 nights--Dec 14th-20th. Staying at Harrah's and Four Queens (all comped nights). This will be my first stay at Harrah's. I'll post trip updates here. I need to work NY hours for some of those days, so I won't be really starting my day until early afternoon, but Vegas is probably the best town if you need to get a late start.

Question: Via the Caesar's app sports betting, I've managed to get myself Diamond Plus status. I don't think there are any Laurel Lounges open in Vegas, but please let me know if that's incorrect. I went to one in Harrah's AC and it was great.

I have a $100 celebration dinner. Any suggestions on where to use it? Unless something changes, I'll be traveling by myself this trip. 99% of my Vegas meals have been food court or buffets or cheap places downtown. I've never come close to running up a $100 meal bill. Where to go? I believe there's a Ruth Chris in Harrah's but I've heard mixed reviews.

Joe's isn't part of Caesars, even though it's in the Forum Shops. They told us that when we asked if they validate parking.

But yeah, five stone crab claws is $100!

Joe's is in the Caesar's Forum mall but not part of Caesar's. I had two friends that worked there as waiters. They loved it and made big money.

The extent of my calculations on Dealer Open Pai Gow are some probabilities…

Dealer has
Pair Jacks 7.4225%
Trip Jacks 0.5498%
Quad Jacks 0.0120%

2+ Jacks 7.9843%

As you can see, the vast majority of “special” hands are the marginal Pair of Jacks hands. I’d be interested to know how all of these would break down normally, as each of these become losers in this variant.

Perhaps Wizard can put this on his to do list…
link to original post

This is a very rough ballpark estimate of this game's HA.

Of the 7.4225% of hands that have a pair of jacks, I estimate that:
-3.977% are two pair hands, that is JJ-XX- xyz
0.277% are three pair hands, that is JJ-XX-YY-x
about 3.2% of the hands are JJ+ 5 singletons

The above ignores straights and flushes occuring with the Jacks, as well as a pair of jacks occurring as part of full house or better hand.

Dealer's two pair hands with a JJpair probably win about 50% of the time and probably push about >45%. Thus, these dealer hands probably have a normal-rules Player EV of about -0.45; which is now converted to -1.00.
Dealer's three pair hands probably win >85% of the time and probably push most of the remainder hands. Thus these hands would have a player EV of about -0.85, which is now converted to -1.0.

Based on all of that, I would make a very rough guess that HA in this game is about 5% +/- 1%, as compared to about 2.8% for the classic 5%-commission version of PGP.

This rough estimate does not eliminate the need for a high quality estimate of HA,but indicates that the HA of this version of PGP is probably worse than the original game's HA.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

I’m wondering if some of your potential options will be temporarily closed during that time period, between rodeo and Christmas traditionally being the slowest time of year in LV.

I know of at least two changes to that list: Binions Steakhouse in Bally's and (believe it or not) Mon Ami Gabi. For MAG, you have to go to Caesars Rewards (right across the floor) and get a comp sheet from them before you go to the restaurant. It's a pain, but hey, free $100!

Damn, I had a list from my November trip, but I think I tossed it. There have been so many restaurant changes since the 'vid that I'm sure that list is out of date. Just ask someone from the Paris or Harrahs CR desk for a current list.

One thing is certain, though--no more free show tix for Diamonds and above. <badword>

There are no Laurel Lounges but as Diamond Plus you get four free drinks per day valued up to $25 each. They should be preloaded on your card, just let your bartender or waiter know wherever you choose to use them. You have a lot of options, basically any casino bar or restaurant listed on the celebration dinner sheet and Starbucks. Bound at Cromwell makes nice drinks.

I used my celebration dinner at Bugsy and Meyers at Flamingo. My husband loved it. I thought it was good. He's surely a better judge of steak.

Thanks all! Right now I’m leaning toward Gordon Ramsey Pub and Grill. HK only has fairly inconvenient reservation times available. The pub has almost the same food and much more availability.

I’ll def look into the free drinks for Diamond Plus. Can use that for something pretty good. I like old fashioneds but the ones you get on the floor are bad/mediocre/absurdly sweet/essentially manhattans.

I think a large part of why harrahs gave me the weekend comp is because it’s a dead time. I’m ok with that. I like when Vegas isn’t crowded. Hopefully some $10 craps on the strip and less crowding.

There is NO $10 craps on the strip. Ellis Island is $5-$300. Palace Station and Gold Coast is $10. Venetian is $15 in the morning. Hope it helps.

That's a good question.

For Diamond Plus players, the resort fees might be waived, but I'm not sure.

Day 1

Finished work and headed to JFK. Great weather but flight delayed by an hour because plane arrived late. Not ideal but fine. Flight to Vegas was good. Quickly deplaned and headed to Uber/Lyft. Uber was $24 and Lyft was $17. Lyft driver came to the airport and then turned around and went 80% of the way to the strip. I kind of think he got a cash fare and took it. He finally arrives 20 mins later than the original pick up time. Car and ride itself were fine. He said something about Lyft double booking him but I didn’t see that on the app.

Checked in at harrahs. Kiosk said there would be a resort fee (which shouldn’t be the case). Found a person who said it was a bug with the kiosk. Room itself is perfectly acceptable. Not as nice as Paris but probably slightly better than Flamingo and Linq. View is nothing. Clean and serviceable. Shower has that weird half glass wall set up.

Went Downstairs. Played tiles for about 2-2.5 hours. Dealers were friendly. One would read the tiles with his hands while I was setting my hand. I found that helpful—if he said something like “oh that’s very bad” I would err towards sacrificing the high hand for the low hand. Eg, 3/4 rather than 1/6. I figured he was focused on the high hand most likely. One time banking turned a $25 loss into a push. Had the table to myself 99% of the time. Eventually a guy and his friend arrived. Neither had any idea what was happening. at about that time I lost a bet and was down $200 and decided to call it a night.

Face up Pai Gow poker progressive bonus is at $5.5 million. Dealer said he’s never seen it that high before. $5 bet. Need 7 card SF (with joker is ok).

Running total: down $200

Day 2A

Didn’t sleep much before having to get up and be online by 6am for NY hours. Worked until 2pm local time. Went downstairs and stopped at the Bobby flay burger place. Got a BBQ smokehouse burger. It was good but a bit salty. Fries would have been way too much.

Walked over to $15 craps table. I was going to buy in but guy next to me never stopped talking. Really chatty. Nothing bad but would have been really annoying. Left before I could buy in and went to crapless table. That was a first for me. Just played $18 8 the whole time. Passed the dice. Ended up $175. Pretty good stretch. At one point asked the dealer about buying the 2 and 12. He said you can buy and pay vig on wins only. I believe that’s better than placing the 6/8. I was going to but then he got really involved in explaining breakage on 2/12/3/11 buy bets and I wanted to avoid all that.

Walked to linq. $5 3CP table. Played for a while and lost $45. Then walked to craps. Linq had $10 table in Osheas. I lost $250 betting PL and $30 odds. Guy next to me was doing all sorts of bad moves. He would call no action on 6/8 DP bets. He would doey-don’t while shooting and then very very carefully set the dice every roll. At one point he tried to buy in for a stack of $5 and $1 and the pit told him to go to the cashier. He pulled out $100 in 20s then. He’d put up 2 way make ‘‘em all bets. Some rolls he had no action at all. Just standing stick left and talking to the Stick.

Anyway, went back to harrahs. The kiosk said (I thought) that Diamond Plus got $10 food voucher because no more laurel lounges. I tried to use it and was told it was 7 stars only. I double checked and it did say 7 stars. Really seems awful to close diamond lounges and basically give nothing (other than some drink vouchers).

Went to the food court and got a ham and cheese sandwich. 95% bread and very little fillings. Rip off for $15. Later got a shake from Bobby burgers. Cookies and cream. It was more watery than I expected. The people who work there were extremely kind though.

Total: Down $325 or so.

Rest of day 2

Played tiles for 90 mins. Older guy at the table was smoking a lot and had non stop comments on the game. It was a lot. Twice the dealer almost made a mistake on my hand. Once she tried to take a push and once she tried to push a win. I corrected her both times. I think she may have been flustered By the other guy. He was betting more and at one point started yelling at the dealer to be quiet while he was going through one of his rituals and said he had to concentrate. He kept talking about the time he bet $15k per hand for 8 hours at Paris. Seeing him bet $200-$300 a hand, I’m guessing he’s either completely lying or the rituals didn’t work out well for him during that session.

I won $140.

Running trip total: down $185 or so.

That’s unusual. I rarely see tiles dealers make those kinds of mistakes. Did she make any mistake in a player’s favor?

I HATE getting a sandwich with little of what you want in the sandwich! I now virtually always order ‘double meat’ at any sub shop or the like.

I believe she made one mistake in my favor. She had 6/7 and I had 6/6. She called it a tie even though I’m pretty sure she had a higher 6. (She def won the 7 vs 6 part). I think there were so many hands close in value that it was easy to mix up. The ones where she almost made a mistake were honestly not tricky to read the hands at all.

I really think the dealers were just overwhelmed by that guy. He was simultaneously taking forever to set his hand because he meticulously read the tiles with his fingers and never stopped talking. Only briefly to smoke. It was a lot. I was only betting $25 so dealer focused on him. Not a pleasant experience but I won a bit so that was nice.

I'm just very happy to hear that Harrah's is still spreading tiles. There was a thread here a few weeks ago suggesting it wasn't.

Also, I never understood why they don't make the minimums multiples of $20 to try to eliminate the use of quarters.
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

I agree. A few places in AC have $20 chips for that reason. I believe all of the pai Gow poker here is no commissions so there’s no quarters there either. I’m guessing someone decided the extra $5 for minimum betters was worth the time and hassle of dealing with quarters.

My wife is so strange. If she is making a sandwich and offers to make me one, she will put a single piece of deli ham or turkey on it with one piece of cheese.I just don't get it.

I enjoy a nice grilled pastrami sandwich and make one about once a month. My wife is absolutely flabbergasted that I put the whole 9oz package of pastrami on my sandwich. i want the meats!

That would be above average for my home. But if you add the UPS, regular mail, plus other deliveries from what seem like members of the mafia, 5 a week would be a very light week.

Seriously though, my wife loves giving X mas gifts. There are boxes scattered throughout my living room. Apparently tomorrow she will be spending many hours wrapping….

Day 3

I’ve had a fair amount to drink today so some of the details below are a bit fuzzy.

Woke up early and worked NY hours (6am-2pm). I tried to grab an egg sandwich in the morning but the line was so long.

After work went downstairs. There was an open and empty tiles table. It usually opens at night but maybe Friday it opens at noon or something. Sat down for about 90 mins. Initially I was down $200 quickly. Like 8 losses and a few ties. Then came back to only be down about $100 or so. Then a seven stars guy sat down and that was the end of banking. I was hungry anyway so I got up.

Walked to flamingo. Food court Chinese place. Got a 3 protein meal with rice. Chicken teriyaki was excellent. Two fried proteins were blah. I should have known better. Ended up being $20. Walked back to harrahs.

$15 craps at harrahs. $15 PL and $30 odds. I got the dice and hit a ton of numbers along with 2 points. Place betters cleaned up. I hit the tall and for about 15 rolls I was one away from the all. I needed a 2. Several people had money on the all. Would have been $1000 or more to several people. Didn’t hit it though. I must have rolled 40-50 times. I was only making line bets and then a few cold shooters. Left the table down $50 or so.

Found a $5 high card flush table. Won $50 or so. Some kids about 21 playing. They were brand new to casinos but polite. One of them turned 21 a few days ago. At one point was dealt a 6 card flush. A-5 plus Jack. The 5 card straight flush would have paid something like $2000 if I made all of the side bets but I never make those.

Went to tiles. Played for maybe 3.5 hours. Had the table to myself for about half of that time. Pleasant session. I think I lost about $50 but not sure. I was carrying chips between tables and grabbing a handful out of my pocket whenever I sat down.

Got some late food at the noodle place in harrahs. Singapore noodles. Really excellent. Fresh, hot, lots of shrimp and pork. Great meat for $20.

Back up to the room. Feeling tired.

Trip total: down $325 or so? Could be a bit higher. I’m probably right about at expectation for the trip.

I don’t even remember what thread this is in….

Sadly, this isn't just around Christmas. I would be shocked if she doesn't get 300 packages delivered each year.

Day 4A

Woke up early to watch some of the 3rd place game. Medium coffee and one donut at Dunkin’ was $9. It was very good Though.

Went to place some small bets on the World Cup final. Machine didn’t print the tickets. Told the guy at the desk and he had them check the tape. Then they printed my bets for me at the desk. Solid customer service.

Walked through couple casinos on my way to planet Hollywood. Someone threw paint on several cars parked at Paris by valet. One of them had words written on it in paint. I would post a photo but there’s obscenity in the paint and not sure if that’s a forum violation. If it’s not a violation I’ll post the photo. Really strange. Unclear if the paint was done while the cars were parked outside. Full on words written on one car so I can’t imagine they were just out in the open by valet.

Walked to planet Hollywood. Good crew at the craps table. $15 PL and $30 odds. Terrible rolls and lost $300.

Trip total: down $625 or so.

Day 4B

Walked to Park MGM. Won both MyVEGAS match plays. Used $25 for both so won $90. The rewards desk woman was very nice.

Killed some time and headed to Caesar’s. I booked Hell’s Kitchen for my diamond rewards dinner. I got the prefix plus Mac and cheese. Scallops were very good. 8 out of 10. Beef Wellington was ok. I’ve never had it before and I didn’t like it as much as traditional seared steak. There was no char. Service was absurdly smooth. The Mac and cheese was very good but it was too much food. I should have gotten Brussels sprouts for a side instead. Sticky toffee pudding was excellent. 9.5 out of 10. Never had it before but I’ll always order it if I’m at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant.

Went into Caesar’s and found $5 9/6 JOB machine. Put $100 in. On my last $25 held AK and pulled a boat. $225 and cashed out for $125 profit.

Walked around a bit and ended up at Linq. Got on $15 craps table. Literally stayed for 1 shooter. She hit like 6 points plus a winner 7. I won over $200 just betting PL and $25-$30 odds.

Back to harrahs for tiles. 2 hours and won $50. One dealer had a very accurate (but maybe snide observation): “You are not a gambler. You are a player.” She said this after recommending that I not bank after I won a non-banking hand. She said most players only bank after a losing hand to change to luck. I said I like to bank because I like setting the tiles and shaking the dice. I could have mentioned winning on ties and 0/0 but didn’t want to bother.

End of day 4 and start of day 5

Monorail to mgm grand to see Ka. Got a ticket in the second row to the side. All in $105. Not bad. Show was excellent. I’ve always enjoyed Cirque shows. There is an elaborate dynamic stage that is a big part of the action. Really impressive. Before the show, found the 9/6 $1 JOB in high limit. 100 play machine but I played 1 hand at a time. Won $60 in about 15 mins and cashed out.

Monorail back to harrahs. Tiles for another hour and lost $50. Crunchburger from Bobby flay was good. Less salty than the smokehouse burger. Again the cashiers there were very nice.

Went to bed. Watched the World Cup final this morning. What a game! I was rooting for Argentina. Glad to see them win. Checked out and cashed $10 bet on Argentina to win. $8.35 profit there.

Trip total: I did a quick count and I think I’m only down about $300 once I back out tips and the like.

I checked out of harrahs. I’m paranoid about posting room photos and the like while still studying there so here you go. Room was very nice. View was blah.

Day 5B

Some good news and some bad news. But overall good.

Uber was super expensive to downtown. I think maybe lots of requests due to World Cup celebrations? Lyft was just as expensive. $43. Normally I think it’s like $18.

Got to 4 Queens and checked in around noon. 2 nights comped. It’s not fancy. It’s old and feels old but it was free and I don’t need fancy amenities. Went to players club and got new card. Received Tshirt and $40 free play.

AGC put out an electronic match play for downtown grand. Up to $50. They sent out the email like a week ago. It’s also on their app. Anyway, I get to Downtown grand and they say that they don’t see it in their system so they won’t honor the match play. Oh well. I decide to play some $5 craps anyway. 2 shooters had monster rolls. I went from $30 odds to full $50 odds (10x). After two more bad rolls (including my own) I cashed out for $400 profit in like an hour.

Back to 4Q. Went to magnolias. Used BOGO for lunch. Got the open faced beef and salmon entrees. Both really delicious. Some of their meals are so so (chicken piccata and country fried steak especially) but those two were excellent. Between BOGO and comp dollars, bill went from like $37 to $5 plus tip.

Sat at 10:7 double bonus. Ended up losing the $40 free play plus $120 more. Oh well. One SF but zero 4OAK.

Trip total: I think I’m right about at even. Maybe Down a nominal amount; like $20 or so.

End of day 5. Start of day 6

I wrote out a post last night but it didn’t upload. Oh well. Short version: played bingo at plaza. Two sessions. Won one game for $120. $40 profit.

BOGO burgers at binions. Sides (cole slaw and potato salad) were bad. $9 for two burgers. They were acceptable.

This morning walked to donut bar. Two donuts plus large coffee. Coffee excellent. Blueberry donut very good and cinnamon sugar donut very good too.

EC for $10 SD BJ. Dealers did better job concealing the bottom card when removing from the shuffler. Last time o was clear as day. Anyway, Guy walks up to the table and buys in for $300. $50 bet and I get A7 vs 3. I double and he grumbles. Then he loses and he’s more upset. Complains to his friend. I laugh. He gets more upset and said “you did this to me and now you’re laughing.” I responded “Yeah, I did this to you.” A few hands later he colors up for $300 and walks. I lost $50.

Back to 4Q. 10/7 DB. Not a whole lot and finally pull 2 more aces on AA hold. Cashed out up $150.

Trip total: maybe up $100 or so?

Sorry—I got a new phone recently and not sure why the photos are upside down. I probably need to orient the phone differently for horizontal photos.

Really seems awful to close diamond lounges and basically give nothing (other than some drink vouchers).

Before the show, found the 9/6 $1 JOB in high limit. 100 play machine but I played 1 hand at a time.

Can you play $ 5 ( 1 line of 5 credits ) on that machine ? The ones I have seen ( if I recall correctly ) will put one dollar on 5 different hands if you play $ 5 worth.

When I selected JOB, it defaulted to like 10 hands. I clicked +1 all the way up to 100 and then it came back around to 1 hand so that worked out well. I’m pretty sure that was my first time playing on a 100 play machine so I wasn’t sure if I could play 1 hand at a time but it let me do it.

I liked the way Harrah's Laughlin used to do it. If the Diamond Lounge was closed you could get free drinks at any casino bar just by showing your Diamond card.

Rest of day 6

Had two solid craps sessions. Both at 4 Queens. First one I won about $300 and second one I won about $200. This is the first time I can remember having multiple winning craps sessions in one trip.

Had some up and down sessions with video poker. Finally got a 3333 and for the day ended up $80 on VP.

Played BJ at Cal. $15 table. Friendly table. I was there for about an hour. Lost $25. Then lost another $30 on their 9/6 JOB VP.

Strange moment at Golden Nugget. There was a $5 high card flush table. I buy in and try to make a $5 ante bet. Dealer says that one of the side bets is now required as well. I think it was the progressive but not sure. I clarified to ask if it’s mandatory or he was just saying it’s a popular bet. Turns out, it’s now mandatory. He said the decision was made recently. I didn’t play and just went to cash in my chips.

Played the dealers choice pai Gow $10. Played for like 3 hours. Very leisurely game. I won $50

Lunch today was BOGO at Binions cafe. The Korean chicken was excellent. Hot, fresh, perfectly cooked, tasty dish. The open face turkey was below average. Magnolias has a dish with the same name but they use turkey like you’d get from a thanksgiving slice of turkey. Binions used cold cut turkey. Not nearly as good. The staff was very nice at Binions.

For dinner, stopped at Wana Taco. Got the sampler three pack. Quite good. All in $10

I may be forgetting some things but those are the highlights of the day.

Trip total: I think I’m up like $700.
