I just read the Wiz's thread on a new game, Uptown/Downtown, and then the idea for a different dice game went off in my noggin.

It is incredibly simple, perfect for drunks, dopers and the innumerate.

Alas, I see no prospect for casino placement; this would almost certainly have to be a street game, or a game played at home, mano el mano.

I've no idea if someone came up with this idea before: all I can say is "It's new to me," but I assume it's been seen before.

OK, to the game: I call it "WTF!"

Two six sided dice are used, the ones we see all the time at a craps table.

The shooter gets to make the call before rolling: he has only two choices: odd or even.

Like street craps, the shooter banks/ fades all of the bets against him: it's shooter vs. everybody else.

If he calls "odd" and the sum of dice roll is odd, he wins the opposing bets: even money.

Otherwise those betting against him win.

Since it is a fifty-fifty proposition, I see no way for a casino to make a profit, unless it tinkers substantially with rules and payout of the game.

Short-pay winning craps numbers at 4:5 instead of even money. Odd pays 1:1 on 5, 7, 9, 11 but 4:5 on 3; Even pays 1:1 on 4, 6, 8, 10 but 4:5 on 2 or 12.

Edge is 1.1%, but due to the one-roll resolution, the bet earns way more than the passline on an hourly basis.

Sounds like a winner to me!
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

I wrote about this before, but I have an idea for odd and even bets where the Big 6 and 8 currently are on a craps table. Here are the return tables for them. As you can see, each has a house edge of 2.78%, the same as the liberal form of the field bet (where a 12 pays 3 to 1).

Even Bet

Number Pays Combinations Probability Return
2 3 1 0.027778 0.083333
4 1 3 0.083333 0.083333
6 0.5 5 0.138889 0.069444
8 0.5 5 0.138889 0.069444
10 1 3 0.083333 0.083333
12 3 1 0.027778 0.083333
Odd -1 18 0.500000 -0.500000
Total 36 1.000000 -0.027778

Odd Bet
Number Pays Combinations Probability Return
3 1.5 2 0.055556 0.083333
5 1 4 0.111111 0.111111
7 0.5 6 0.166667 0.083333
9 1 4 0.111111 0.111111
11 1.5 2 0.055556 0.083333
Even -1 18 0.500000 -0.500000
Total 36 1.000000 -0.027778

Reading this thread, I cannot help but wonder, why an odd/even bet in Craps has never taken hold. Ever. Wow.

As far as I know, nobody has ever tried it.

I have seen this game in several "historic" type Japanese samurai flicks from the 50's - 70's. Unfortunately, for those hoping inspiration has landed on their shoulder, it is not new. However, just like Pai Gow Poker uses established equipment in a new way, I think the application of this game in a modern casino setting might gain some traction like "Casino War".

Edit: It's called "Chohan Bakuchi"

Question though... What happens to the existing "Field" bet? Most of the same numbers are already covered, and its position on the layout allows most players to reach it easily to place their bet. Occupying the "Big 6/8" corner makes it inconvenient for the players positioned near the stick. Also, how do you avoid confusion when the seven shows up and the dealers sweep up all the wagers out of habit?

Is one of the dice a two?
