So, I was in Tahoe over the weekend and the Pai Gow dealer told me an interesting story. It seems there was a player that was not playing the fortune bonus that got a 7 card straight flush. All the other players had $5 for the envy bonus and stood to win $5K. The player flipped his cards over and asked the other players with the envy bonus if they would give him $1K each. They all refused, so the guy surrendered his hand and no one got paid.

I'm going to call BS on the story. I have nothing to back that up.. I just don't believe it.

Edited to add: I believe you are relaying the story you were told as it was told to you. I just don't believe what was told to you.

Edited to add something else as I think about it: He had what was most likely at least a hand that pushed.. if not won against the dealer. It's not a hand that would be surrendered. What I don't know is the fact that he showed the hand to the camera whether the other players could get their envy bonus anyways.

I have no idea how or why this urban legend gets passed around and forwarded by naïve gamblers. If a dealer tells you this story, then a dealer is just telling you a story.

First of all, the odds of a non-bonus player getting a seven-card straight flush is ridiculously small.
Second, why would the player fold his hand for a loss, as a straight flush would almost never lose - to spite other players?

Third, the other players at the table could simply say "Sure, we'll be glad to pay you to play out the hand, you can count on that, we're just glad you got that hand!" - and then tell him to go screw himself after the round is complete, just for being a d*ck who demanded money from other players.

In fact, I'm tempted to spread an urban legend that such a player was promised the money and that he did play out the hand, only to get screwed by the other players who stiffed him in the end, as a lesson.

This is a story that's as old as the game itself. It may have happened at some point, but it's probably apocryphal. If it happened, it was probably some guy inspired by hearing this story.

By the way, it would appear that many casinos have rules against this happening. I'm sure that's probably discussed in the thread mentioned earlier.

99.726% it's just an urban legend / made up / spread around / etc.

But even then, (let's say I was in this position), I'd probably tell the guy yeah absolutely I'll give you $1k, I was planning on it as it's only fair to tip a player...yada yada yaa....then of course, not give him anything.

I'm not a pai gow player or nothing like that, but, as far as I know or think -- the side bet is independent of the main bet...meaning you can win one and lose the other or vice versa. I would think fouling your hand would result in an instant loss on the main bet, but the side-bet would still be "live", as the side bet is based on your 7 cards dealt - NOT - the result of your main bet.

PGD, yes - people do things to spite other players. I was playing BJ years ago at a $10 table or something, guy next to me wants to bet $25 or $50 on my hand, I'm like ok sure whatever idc. I hit my 12v2, busted, dealer made a hand, other player got angry. Whatever. Next hand, same thing, 16vT, hit, bust. He's STILL betting on my hand...I tell him I play how I want to even if he's got money on my hand. I think I fenaggled on a bet where I put $10 out there, he puts out $50 or $100 or some shit, I switch my $10 with $1 or $2, then continue hitting until busting guaranteeing a $2 or something loss. Some people are stupid....and for many of us, it's fun to mess with stupid people.

I would never do something like that. It is your fault that you did not play the bonus because you feel that the HE is high on it (sometimes with the payout increase it's actually an ok bet). Don't screw other people because of your mistake/failure/unwillingness to risk. Deal with it and move on.
