Hi all,

This was a question that popped up a few nights ago when some people were chatting at a LIR game, and I haven't worked through any math, but it seemed sufficiently interesting at the time without thinking much about it.

The question was, would you rather receive trips or a three card straight flush in the player hand?

There were a couple bets and some casino-specific caveats implied to be included in the question, such as the presence of a three card bonus bet that automatically ensured a 30:1 or 40:1 payout, respectively, as well as the possibility of a tournament invite if a player receives high quads (four tens or better) if the $1 bonus bet was made, which could matter (but not really possible to quantify) if the math was "close enough."

Some people liked the possibility of a guaranteed no-brainer at a 9:1 minimum payout on the main game with a reasonable chance at a FH or quads, others thought the possibility of a huge hit with a flush/straight/two pair/trips/high card still up for grabs more than offset the fact you might lose 2-3 units in the game itself.

My own suspicion was that the answer would depend on the presence of high cards, with a ten-low SF (or better) favoring the 3c SF being dealt.

I will 100% (also not knowing the math) take the 3OAK on that game, because you're going to win all 4 bets at odds 100% of the time, and still have 2 chances for 4OAK and numerous chances for a FH.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.
