I do if the federal government leaves it up to the states to determine casino gambling, then why not for sports betting? Also, with a conservative supreme court, this could be a states rights issue also.

I'd say that in 20 years, sports betting will be prevelent in the US.

But I'm thinking this New Jersey thing is not going to be quick and easy.

If I am reading the law right, the only sporting events they cannot accept bets on are collegiate events taking place in, or involving schools from, New Jersey. I wonder if this includes bets on who will win the BCS Football or NCAA Men's Basketball titles as long as Rutgers and NJIT (and whatever other D1 schools are in NJ) are still eligible. (They can always do what Vegas did for a few years, and simply say, "Which non-NJ school will do the best in those events?".)

Note that none of the next four Final Fours are scheduled for New Jersey (they're in Atlanta, Dallas (well, wherever Cowboys Stadium is located), Indianapolis, and Houston).

I was going to comment that there is nothing similar to what I like to call the "David Stern rule," where the commissioner of a professional league can request that bets not be taken on games in that league played in, or involving a team from, Nevada (Stern requested that no bets be taken on the NBA All-Star Game when it was played in Las Vegas), but I think the only "major sport" team still in NJ is the Devils.

A couple of operations that others might consider "major sport" teams would be the Giants and the Jets.

Also, would this include racing? Last I heard, F1 was going to run a city circuit in NJ...

Shows you how much I pay attention to the NFL - I thought MetLife stadium was in New York. Didn't know it was in East Rutherford. (I thought pretty much the whole point of building a new stadium was to bring the teams back to "New York proper.")

On top of everything else, this puts the 2014 Super Bowl is in New Jersey - the NFL is going to love the fans having easy access to places where you can bet on the game legally, right? (It reminds me of an episode of The Odd Couple where Oscar Madison admits on the air during a Monday Night Football broadcast that he had a bet on that night's game, and Howard Cosell demands that he apologize on the spot to Pete Rozelle.)

Are the Nets still in NJ? I don't follow the NBA.

The Nets are my favorite basketball team, I have been following them since 1989. The Nets concluded their final year playing in New Jersey this past season.

The Nets will be playing in Brooklyn and be known as the "Brooklyn Nets" this upcoming season and thereafter, they are currently building a brand new State of the Art Arena Downtown Brooklyn by Atlantic Ave which will be completed before the start of the next season.

Nets moving to Brooklyn, NY for next season.

I think NJ Sports Book has a chance, a small one, but a chance.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

From the article: “To those with a vested interest in the status quo – the professional sports organizations who take a hypocritical stance that wagering will ruin the purity of the game and the Nevada-based conglomerates that have enjoyed that state’s stranglehold on sports wagering for the last 20 years, I respectfully say, ‘Bring it on,’ ” New Jersey state senator Raymond Lesniak said in a statement.

Is he aware that Nevada-based conglomerate Ceasars Entertainment dominates the AC market?

I don't think it's so much "the purity of the game" as it is the fear of things like point-shaving. The recent problems with soccer in Italy are only going to intensify their worries.

that's a strawman's argument. fixing will occur because of sports betting. sports betting occurs whether or not it is legal or not. thus fixing occurs whether it is legal or not.

Sports Betting already legal in NV. And there has been point-shaving inquiries even within the last few years... right here in the US.
And theres Sports Booking, though not legal, that does a healthy business. And the shadowy world of scripted events... that one has some wiggle room.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

Well, the NHRA Supernationals are starting tomorrow at Raceway Park in Old Bridge. They are advertising up to 320 m.p.h. That could qualify to drive on the Garden State Parkway.
