Quote: WizardI put $20 on my namesake to win, plus $10 from my dad. Just before the race I had to meet someone at the Palms. My 9-year-old son was in tow. He seemed excited about the race and wanted to make a bet on Shackleford. To improve his chances of winning, I went up to the window at the Palms at put $3 on Shackleford to show. As I watched the race I thought for sure this would make my son's day. Sheesh. Horrible ending. At least I had the chance to teach my son what a "bad beat" is.
I know it probably felt like a bad beat, but the way he was running on the backstretch, I was amazed he held on for 4th. At the top of the stretch, I would have put the over/under of his finish at about 8.5. The fact that he was only passed by 3 of the 18 best 3 year olds down the stretch either means he's got a ridiculous amount of game, or this year's 3 year olds really are very weak.

¡¡¡Puñeta!!!
I meant to put a bet on him, but totally forgot. Not only that, I have to honor the bets I booked for my father. I hope none of my old pals in Baltimore are going to write to me asking how much I bet on my namesake. That old nag cost me money by losing in the Kentucky Derby, and then winning the Preakness. Dang it!
Quote: cclub79I had him on Top of a Tri with the 3 favorites then ALL. So that was a tidy $700.90
I should have done that. Just put him with the 2 favorites first, second, fourth doesn't quite get there. he he

My bet was just under $50 anyway, so it wasn't a big difference in doing that rather than just putting it on his nose. Better for me would have been MMM 2d and one of the way out there horses to show.
Quote: kenarmanCome on I can't be the only one that had a bet on Shackleford. Did everyone actually think the world had ended? $50 on the nose at 12 to 1.
Congratulations! At least somebody here had faith. I hope you don't mind if I steal that excuse for not making the bet. It sounds better than "I forgot to."
Seemed like a good bit of "maybe" without much discussion about what effect it might actually have.
Sorry for the lack of a link... memory problems: both the computer's and mine!
A win in that race, and he would most likely wrap-up the Champion 3 year old title. He would also start being a contender for horse of the year.
I don't think he really has much of a chance. The race is 1 1/2 miles, 5/16 longer than his Preakness win. With his front running style, I see him tiring pretty early in the stretch of the huge Belmont oval.
His morning line odds of 9/2 are a bad bet, but in advance wagering, I think he is at something like 15-1 right now. I think 10-1 is the magic number on him.
He does have a chance to win. He needs to set an easy pace (around 24.5 seconds each 1/4 mile), with all of the serious contenders afraid to go out there and challenge him. Then he'll need to somehow have enough left in the tank to hold them off.
Like I said, at 9/2, it's a pretty bad bet, but it looks like no one is respecting him, so he might be had at a nice price.
The race is at around 6:30 eastern. Enjoy!
The race will be broadcast on NBC. The track is heavily favoring speed so far, so Shackleford is a great bet. My guess is that he'll go off at around 6-1. If he wins this race, he'll be the favorite for winning the 3 year old of the year award.
Good luck Shackleford!
My name should also be in the news any time now, as Shackleford Banks, North Carolina are in the direct line of fire of Hurricane Irene (corrected). Not surprisingly, most maps don't bother to indicate the name.

D-oh!

Don't feel bad, there must be something connected with the two names internally because I've heard 3 separate newscasters call it "Emily", including Shepherd Smith yesterday.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I blame one of those three for misinforming me. Both names have the same vowel-consonant pattern, if you count "y" as a vowel, which it is in this context.

He just did it again! and then said "Why do I keep calling it Emily!??!" Emily was one of the '05 storms when we had so many.
The fact that both decided to pull a reverse in the same race was quick surprising....
Too bad.
This performance seriously damaged Shackleford's chances for Horse of the Year; just hope to see better in the Breeder's Cup.

At the risk of being too off-topic, the hurricane name lists are re-used every 6 years, so there was an Emily this year, too. Storm names that become memorable in the public conscious are retired, and are replaced with new ones. My guess is that Irene will get said treatment.
