2023 WoV Picks Game DISCUSSION Thread

GENERAL QUESTION: Do you guys like having the Lines and updated Standings in the Official Thread, or would you prefer it just be the Lines and Picks? I have the thread Closed and Pinned to the top of Sports Betting, so its main purpose is just for people to be able to find the lines quickly if there's a lot of conversation going on in this thread.

I like having the standings pinned there also. I might feel differently if I wasn’t currently on top of them though. :-)

I'm half wondering if either of those other two are deliberate because I did hear from one person that the PM feature was briefly down, so when I post the Lines next week, I will provide an Email (via PM) to send the Picks to in case that ever happens in the future; I've never seen that happen before. I'd ask only that you try PM first, then go ahead and use the E-Mail if it doesn't go through.

Scolist sent a PM Skipping Week 6, so that was deliberate. If anyone says that they attempted to send their Picks, and that the PM didn't go through, I'll have to try to figure out an equitable way to address that. On the one hand, I'd hate for someone to unintentionally take a Skip Week when they intended to submit their picks, but on the other hand, there is nearly a three day window within which to submit one's Picks...so the PM feature being out for a few hours (or whatever it was)...I don't know.

On the third hand, which is one too many, it's not like people should be expected to check their PM Outbox, so if they click on the send button and then close the window, they would have every reason to believe their PM was sent.

I have spoken to FourFiveFace who I believe may have attempted to send his Picks last night.

I have received his intended Picks, but unfortunately, they included the Ravens game; the Ravens game is in progress, so I cannot accept Picks that include that game.

Given that we know JML24 did not attempt to make Picks, I have given FourFiveFace the option of either swapping the Ravens Pick for something else (and having his Picks play this week), or alternatively, to use his Skip Week.

No one picked either side of the Cardinals vs Rams, nor the Over/Under of that game.

FourFiveFace's Picks have been added to the list as he opted to replace his Ravens Pick with a different one. FourFiveFace shall retain his Skip Week as I have ample reason to believe that he attempted to submit his Picks at a time prior to the deadline.

The other players (who submitted their Picks later) to report issues with PM's are SOOPOO and JStephe8WVU. The latter states that he first attempted to send his Picks yesterday evening, between 7:30-8:30p.m. EST; SOOPOO did not specify when he first attempted to send his Picks.

When I post next week's Lines, I will send all players a PM with a backup E-Mail to send Picks in case the PM fails. Alternatively, players can choose to simply always send their Picks to this E-Mail, if they wish. The reason I say that is because players might have to check their PM Outbox to see that a PM did not go through, so it seems that there is going to be an additional step, either way.

However, with the E-Mail available to everyone, by one means or another, all Picks will be expected to be submitted by deadline even if there is a PM issue.

The forum made 18 picks on the 49ers ATS and only 1 pick on the Browns -the latter a pick by FourFiveFace. Apparently, FourFive Face is a supernatural genius at picking. And just as apparent, everyone else is hell-bent on depriving Mission of the "You Suck" prize.

This is wild! I didn’t expect to suck this badly, even intentionally. I’d probably be in contention had I just made the opposite of my Picks since Week 3 and kept trying to win.

My Picks almost certainly wouldn’t have been the exact opposite though. As counterintuitive as it sounds, I can have more confidence in a side to lose than its opposite to win, even though the two are functionally the same thing.

Are you sure? That total of 508 would seem to amount to fewer than three and a half picks per week per player. From my simple addition of the numbers in the "Record" column for the "Week 6 Cumulative Results" above I get 429W + 440L. Am I mistaken?

Regardless of that, even though the FWoV Fund has done okay since getting started a few weeks ago, to really make the holidays merry for those ladies of library science folks need to get the overall long-range win rate down closer to 40%. Cancelling out selections made on both sides to take only the net of each does have the effect of materially increasing the ROI and cutting the vig involved, but still. While folks here are admirably better at picking losers than the EV of fading random drunks in a bar, playing the reverse of "winning" mid to upper 40s really won't provide very well for those nubile performance artists. They deserve better, and with unJon on-board helping a little now, I'm confident your collective efforts can make it happen. All together now, let's see un 40-ish%. You can do it. Yes you can!

The funny thing is my average beats the juice over a nine year period, though maybe not now, but I have been legitimately trying to come in last as of Week 3.

Can't believe the Chiefs and Chargers couldn't score 8 points in the entire second half to hit the over!
