Quote: SOOPOOMy picks are in. I am expecting to have the highest point total in WoV history. There are 18 weeks to pick, correct? Will my 68-40 record accomplish that?

A record like that could win, but I don't think it would be within sniffing distance of all-time best.
Hold on, I'll look; the threads are actually somewhat easy to find:
68-40 = .630 (rounded)
2022: .586
2021: .664
2020: Covid-No Game
2019: .652
2018: .604
2017: .612
2016: .634
2015: .590
2014: .700
2013: .586
2012: .713
With that, .630 could win and would be middling as far as 1st Place goes. It would be nowhere near GOAT NFL Picks Game result.

You didn’t read my post. I said highest point total, not highest percentage. There are skip weeks, ties, and some years only had 17 weeks. And some don’t use confidence picks. I don’t think anyone ever had the 68 I’m going to (not really…) get!

I definitely read your post; I just didn't comprehend it properly due to the fact that I am an idiot.
68 wins...eighteen weeks, all games picked, every confidence pick possible. I guess the logical thing to do would be to start with the years with the highest winning percentage and work our way down. With that, we go all the way back to 2012. In 2012, Wizard went an amazing 62-25 for a .713 winning percentage. Let's look at 2014. Wizard won that with a record of 56-24 (.700) despite that JohnZimbo had 62 wins.
I guess the next thing to do is look at 2019 and 2021, which are the only two remaining years where it is even mathematically possible. 2019 saw Joeman winning by going 60-32 (.652), though you actually had the most wins with 63.
However, in 2021, when making Confidence Picks was incentivized by the Perfection Bonus, JohnZimbo won with a record of 71-36 (.664), so 68 would still be second best.

Greetings!
This post is to notify everyone that I am now sending the second reminder, via PM. I am deliberately not sending any to MWalz9 as he said he was going to play, via text. I do not want to bother him if he has decided he no longer wishes to play.
FourFiveFace reappeared earlier this week, so he is getting another reminder. We're certainly hoping to see EdCollins again, though it looks like we may not, but I am going to send him another reminder anyway.
Do I poke Terapined again? Nah. He's certainly aware of it, by this point.
I have fifteen PM's in my Inbox already that either are, or could be, Picks...so I obviously can't open those. One set of Picks was publicly posted...that's sixteen. I'm sending eight reminders, but two are to people who are not listed, so that's six. That makes 22. I don't get a reminder and nor does MWalz...that's 24...everything checks out! NICE!
The first week is always complicated for this. I don't think I have ever screwed this up, but the one thing about reminders is...if I am going to send them at all...then I must send them to everyone or it is unfair.
Finally, I need someone to volunteer to receive my Picks just so that there's a timestamp proving I made mine prior to seeing any. You can open my Picks after Picks are posted, or not; it doesn't matter; it's the sent timestamp that is important on my Picks.
***BillRyan added to list + reminder sent.

I sent a PM with an apology, but I would also like to publicly apologize to BillRyan for failing to put him on the initial list. I just sent him a reminder PM, as well. Somehow, I saw this post, but then missed it when I was putting together the initial list of players...which I was mostly basing on PMs anyway.
Quote: avianrandyHard to believe it's that time again. Does anyone have at&t or directv? My local channels fox and cbs are blacked out due to a contract dispute between the 2 parties and the network demanding more than double what they were paid last year. This is going to suck if I cannot watch nfl games.

I have AT&T and it’s so frustrating. I also have a $25 antenna, and it works perfectly.
That said, is there a thread that outlines the pros and cons of streaming services (e.g., YouTubeTV)? If not, I should start one. I wanna make the jump, but I’m sort of stuck in my ways. But it’s gotta be better (and less expensive) that what I have today. Sigh.
If no one else has volunteered, I will agree to receive your picks each week.
Matt

Do I get in trouble if I call you a liar because you are not an idiot?
That’s one freaking good year by JohnZimbo! By the way, in my Mission to get to 68 I only took 1/2 point spreads!
Thanks again for doing all the work.
I'm not sure as I don't read every thread; I do know DT has a thread like that.
PlayYourCardsRight,
That sounds great; thank you! I couldn't remember if I sent them to UnJon or Gordon last time; I guess I could look, but I'm lazy. It's probably good if I switch up who I send mine to anyway.
Soopoo,
You're quite welcome!
Everyone,
I'm sending my picks to PlayYourCardsRight now. Please expect all Picks to be up between 11:00-12:00 EST; I have something I have to do and then I'll be able to do it.

I'd also like to welcome my friend, JStephe8wvu to the game. He's been a friend of mine irl (I actually have a few of those, can you believe it?) for dang near fifteen years now, so it's great to have him in the game for the first time. I don't know whether or not he will post. He will submit his Picks, via PM, as with everyone else---which he did. Actually, I didn't know for sure he would play until I saw his Picks PM in my inbox.

If you submitted Picks, please double check and make sure you are listed. I am fairly confident I got everyone, but I am also going to double check myself.
I'm going to try to grade them as they go and then compile the standings. Ideally, on Tuesday morning, I will only have to grade Monday Night Football games, which will make posting the results and standings on Tuesday much faster. At a minimum, I'll grade early and afternoon games late this evening, SNF tomorrow and MNF on Tuesday.
I'm not going to make an official player list yet as Week 2 Entry is permitted, though usually nobody does; it's only happened a few times. I would remind anyone considering Week 2 Entry that you have already used your Skip Week (Week 1), so without Default Picks in place, any missed week is an 0-5 record and disqualification from consolation prizes.
For the time being, we have 26 players to Week 1, so this is fantastic turnout. Winner aside, 24 of those will pay Entry Fees (which will be paid to Second Place if I win.) I don't pay an Entry Fee and the winner obviously won't be paying themselves, so the First Place profits (if I am not in first) are going to be $850 and Second Place if I finish in first will be looking at $750 in profits.
This was also an excellent first week for formatting! There were only three sets of Picks PM'ed back to people in the correct format and only one that I would have considered totally unacceptable after Week 3---though I could at least tell what the Picks were.
Good luck to everyone and let's have another great year!

As you can see in the post above, I'm going to do my best to keep running results going as often as possible. That said, Sunday Night results can be expected at some point on Monday and MNF results on Tuesday.
I would ask for the following two things:
1. Please self-check your own results, as time permits. This would be best done on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, but there's no harm letting me know if I made a mistake earlier than that. EdCollins' program never made mistakes, and I usually didn't, but I think I made one or two during the season I manually graded.
2. If Official Results are pending (i.e. it's not Tuesday yet), then there is really no reason to alert me if I have missed one of your games. If I do miss one of your games as I am doing running results, then I will almost certainly notice the oversight on Tuesday and correct it.
ATS
Jaguars: 13 units (Won)
Bengals:10 units (Lost)
Eagles: 10
Giants: 9
Raiders: 9
Over/Unders
Texas-Ravens U 44: 4 units (Won)
Early leaders
JStephe8WVU (3-0)
JohnZimbo (4-1)
All of the early games were Under except one (Colts vs Jags)
(Oops, forgot to turn off CAPS LOCK; I'm leaving it because it's funny. Forceful. I am very insistent that you must be greeted.)
Anyway, the running results are updated to include both early and afternoon games, so feel free to check your own and let me know if there are any errors. I am going to make a master list on Tuesday morning and double-check everything and I also don't think I made any mistakes.
Tonight's game may be graded tonight, but probably will be done tomorrow.

You're right. You are the only contestant who picked on the point total for the Cowboys/Giants game, and I missed that. Thanks.

Is this a program or are you doing it by hand?
If it's a program, then I would be quite appreciative if we could go to that around Week 4 if your program and my manual grading agree for three weeks. If you're doing it by hand, then I'd suggest not duplicating my efforts as I am unlikely to make a mistake. I don't mind if you do duplicate my efforts and it would be a good double-check, but it doesn't seem like the best use of your time.
For anyone who is curious as to why I don't think any mistakes will last longer than Tuesday, here is my manual grading process:
Sunday:
1.) Grade early and afternoon games.
2.) Add weekly records as applicable.
Monday:
3.) Grade Sunday Night games.
4.) Add weekly records as applicable.
Tuesday:
5.) Grade Monday Night games.
6.) Add weekly records as I go.
7.) Make a physical list of all results. Use CTRL + F to look for team nicknames (this is why formatting is important) compare to Master List of results and make sure team---> win/loss is the same for all spreads on that team.
8.) Repeat #7 for each team.
9.) Use the list of results and do the same thing for game totals as #7 & #8.
10.) Confirm weekly records.
11.) Post/Update standings.
ATS bets are the easiest to describe. I have a pick entry table with 32 rows for each NFL team and 26 columns for each player. Once picks are posted, I manually digitize the player picks by entering into the 32x26grid which teams each player has picked against the spreads (a 1 is entered for 1 unit and a 2 is entered for confidence picks at the appropriate grid points.)
I have another 2x32 table to enter results against the spread as games are completed: team name in one column and a second column in which I enter in whether that team covered, didn't cover, or pushed against the spread.
Once I enter in each game result my spreadsheet system automatically updates every player's score and automatically updates an unordered table of player scores. Once all games are completed and results are available and entered it requires a short manual operation to generate a list of players that is ordered from best record to worst record.
Over/Under bets on point totals is more labor intensive, since the definition of the games changes each week.
***********************
My thought was that EdCollins provided a lot of information that made the contest more fun and I just set about exploring how difficult it would be to reproduce some of that info. But the posted list of player picks is pretty chaotic and automated conversion of info on player picks into a spreadsheet system is a non-trivial programming task. And, hey, I'm already busy enough doing this endless moderator job, so it makes no sense for me to intrude/overlap into whatever roles you want to have on what is entirely your contest. I guess I'm a possible backup option for getting results out if you have a weekend when you're simply not available for some reason.
Or...hint...hint... maybe one of the players in the game who are genuine programmers can write a labor-saving method of going from posted picks to players scores and rankings, a la EdCollins.

Quote: gordonm888I don't have an automated way of reading player picks into my spreadsheet system, but once I have entered the posted picks I don't have to grade anyone -that is done automatically.

All of that sounds good!
I would say that the backup idea is a good one; I would appreciate if you could do that if I've not graded, posted standings and posted the following week's lines by Thursday. I can assure you that I wouldn't lean on you for that as it is highly unlikely for me not to have accomplished those tasks by then.
The information would be interesting to have again, but other than the programming itself...while I appreciate your willingness to do it...I don't see the gain in duplicating my efforts if it is going to require anything more than copy/paste.

1.) Please verify the correctness of your results at your convenience. Unless Gordonm888 and I made the same exact mistake, then Giants/Cowboys and Bills/Jets are the only games that can possibly be in error; I have already double-checked both games.
2.) The Standings are to follow in the next post.
3.) You can visit the Official Thread:

At any time if you wish to jump straight to results, lines and standings. In addition to the link, it is stickied to the top of the Sports Betting sub-forum until the conclusion of the season.
4.) SOOPOO loses on Bills-CONFIDENCE for making a pick with his heart, but what is my excuse? I don't have one. I obviously have no desire to see Rodgers hurt, but in terms of the Bills Pick, that should have been optimal for me.

I’ve been bad but never close to ‘Mr. You Suck’. I think. I did win ‘Mr. Average’ one year. I think. And I missed out on a top 3 finish in some contest here by .00000000001 or so.
With my bad picks I still won money. Biggest bet was getting Allen and Rodgers each under 274.5 parlayed. Paid 6-1.

I’m messing around with an Excel file between the raindrops that can do this. It’s not super great as it won’t pick up misspelled teams or using city (Cleveland) instead of mascot (Browns). If I get anywhere useful I’ll let you know. I have no programming skills but am decent with Excel.

Awesome! Please keep me posted, as well.
If anyone wants to help with any kind of Picks grader, then I'll definitely accept that, but only on condition it doesn't require any more than you just copy/pasting stuff and telling it to grade it.
As far as everything having to appear perfectly, no misspellings, etc---that's my responsibility to ensure, either way.

Ok, I’ve got an excel file that graded week 1 and got the same answers as you did Mission and Gordon. I’ll use it for week 2 and post its results. If it seems reliable, I would love to send it to one of you guys to be responsible for posting results as I do not want that responsibility all season.

I appreciate it! I don't know if I could use it or not as I don't have Microsoft anything and use Google Drive (I think the equivalent is called Google Sheets) stuff.
If Gordon wants to use that, then I'd certainly be most appreciative. As ever, I would like for people to confirm their own results---so as long as it agrees with manual grading for two weeks I'd have no trouble going to it fully.
Even the thing just grading spread bets would be a huge time saver. Most people don't make totals bets, so grading those by hand doesn't take particularly long.
The Week 2 Lines are as follows:
Raiders 8.5 @ Bills -8.5 O/U 46.5
Packers -1 @ Falcons 1 O/U 40.5
Ravens 3.5 @ Bengals -3.5 O/U 46.5
Bears 2.5 @ Buccaneers -2.5 O/U 40.5
Seahawks 5.5 @ Lions -5.5 O/U 47.5
Colts -1 @ Texans 1 O/U 39.5
Chiefs -3.5 @ Jaguars 3.5 O/U 51
Chargers -3 @ Titans 3 O/U 45.5
Giants -5.5 @ Cardinals 5.5 O/U 40
49ers -7.5 @ Rams 7.5 O/U 45
Jets 9.5 @ Cowboys -9.5 O/U 38.5
Commanders 3.5 @ Broncos -3.5 O/U 39
Dolphins -3 @ Patriots 3 O/U 47
Saints -3 @ Panthers 3 O/U 40
Browns -2 @ Steelers 2 O/U 39
If you are looking to compare lines for the purposes of making Picks, then I believe going to Miplet's page:
https://miplet.net/newnfl/
Will give you the most up-to-date lines that you can compare to the ones posted below.
Thank you again to Miplet!
I've confirmed the accuracy of the lines, which I may or may not continue to do. It honestly doesn't take that long; not having to type everything is the big time save on posting the lines.

In that event, thank you to both yourself and UnJon!
I'll still do it manually once or twice just to make sure everything seems correct, but after that, we'll go to the Excel program.
As ever, people should check their own results and report any inaccuracies in the grading. Naturally, if the program grades anything incorrectly in later weeks, then I would manually grade everything for the applicable week just to be sure. As I recall, when EdCollins program would make a mistake in its youth, the mistake typically either had to do with formatting (which is my responsibility to keep formatting uniform) or it was just such an egregious mistake that he (or someone else) almost instantly caught it.

You have to use the spread as shown in the post on this thread. This is a contest and everyone is required to use the same lines as everyone else, no matter that the sportsbook lines shift after the contest lines have been posted.

The link shows you the current lines, which some people use for the purpose of making their decisions. For the purpose of the game, the Colts are always -1 for this week.
This is just the notification that the following has occurred:
Picks Received: 7
Reminders Sent: 18
Separate PM sent to BillRyan (banned rule) notifying him to either PM me his Picks on DiversityTomorrow (Mission146) or to send them to my E-Mail address, which was obviously in the PM.
I've yet to receive Picks from BillRyan, so I think he will be using his Skip Week.
In the meantime, I seem to have Picks from everyone and just sent my own Picks to PlayYourCardsRight. For those reasons, I will begin compiling the Picks now and should have them up in more than ten (after deadline to make Picks), but under twenty minutes.
