Quote: AyecarumbaConfidence losses do real damage to a player's win percentage. It seems more so than the boost provided by a confidence win.
I'm curious if Sparty was actually trying to make losing picks, or just fell into them.
It depends on if the player is at or above .500 when making the pick to begin with. If the player is at .500, then it doesn’t matter. If the player is over .500, then a confidence pick stands to potentially hurt the winning percentage more than it can help. If a player is below .500, then a confidence pick stands to help (unless going for the You Suck prize) more than it can hurt.

I already know my best bet for next week. But I'm keeping it hush hush....
Going to throw this out there as food for thought. This game has earned money based on peoples picks. The playoff freeroll is going to be open to everyone that participated in the regular season game. The question, there are people that stopped picking months ago and also people that have been using default picks most of the year. Do I allow those people to get a full share? I could weight it so that if you only contributed 4 out of 16 weeks then you only get 25% of the prize money that you might win.
Quote: GWAEGoing to ask this question in here about the playoff game. We have some money to add to a playoff pool. Let me know your opinion and feel free to PM it if you dont want it posted on here.

Your game, your rules. That being said, I think the weighting by participation seems fair at first blush, but how fine do you cut it? Will those who took a skip week, or joined late only be eligible for a partial share? Everyone owes the same entry fee regardless...

You had this good idea to do this, and you put all the bets in, so I’d say whatever you decide is fine.
I would also say that if people’s default picks were included in the pick tallies that you based the bets on, then those people did have an effect on this doing so well. They just put less time into it. And maybe for some of those people, if they knew from the get go that they’d be excluded from the playoff pool for submitting defaults , would have made actual picks.

Default picks were for over/under which we did not bet on so they did not count. You have a good point that if I were to exclude that at the beginning then maybe they would have made more picks. Maybe them making more picks would have been been bad for us... or maybe it would have been better.

I am trying to be fair to everyone. The entry fee plays no part in this as it was my own thing so that doesnt weigh in on my final decision but you make a good point as to where I cut it. One of those NCAA bracket things where no matter where you end it someone is left behind.
When looking at the skips there are some people that bowed out really early.
When thinking about this more, I have made some good friends on this site over the last 6 years and would hate to alienate someone and cause a rift.

Re=read your last sentence. Do not exclude anyone. Include everyone who started.
Butttttttt...... above is just advice. It is your baby so do what you want......

Ok I didn’t know that defaults are always just over/under bets.
The default picks haven't been posted yet (again) but by now I think I have a pretty good idea what they are. If I guessed wrong I'll correct during the week.

First, I'd like to give a big thanks to Mission, for hosting the game and handling the bulk of the grunt work AND for generously donating to the prize fund.
Second, I'd like to thank everyone else (Babs, GenWyzgy, unJon) who also graciously donated to the prize fund with all of the additional prizes they offered. I wasn't following all of the additional prizes, and thus I believe there are a few others who should be recognized here.
And last but certainly not least, I'd like to thank everyone who played, and for those who contributed to the forum discussion, and in doing so helped to make this NFL season more enjoyable.
Good luck to all next weekend.
So no one got dropped. Per the rules, they simply took an 0-5 Forfeit Week over and over and over. However, next year we might want to include a rule that says after x number of Skip Weeks (two? three?) you're dropped for good.
Finally, can we eliminate Default Picks next year? For one, I think they're stupid but more importantly, they never get posted initially anyway. If you can't remember to make your picks by Saturday night/early Sunday morning (and there must be a dozen different methods available to remind you), then I say you must take an 0-5 forfeit. "Default picks" seem like way more work than what they are worth.
Quote: EdCollinsNote that I never dropped anyone from the standings, even if that player had many multiple Skip Weeks. We have no rule about when someone should or shouldn't be dropped, and whom am I to say they still couldn't make picks late in the season, and mount a huge comeback. Furthermore, if I dropped them and then they did start making picks again, I'd then have to add them back in so their record was accurate... and all of that would be way too much work.
Understood! For the purposes of getting a complete record, is there an easy way to include only weeks actually picked (or default picked) by people to the final standings? Basically, dropping any 0-5 weeks that were not by actual picks?

I'm not opposed to eliminating Default Picks because they are a pain in the @$$ and I also understand about everyone being able to make their picks. We might start a new thread for proposed rule changes after the playoff version of this game is over so we can put some stuff to a vote. Naturally, the idea of Default Picks originally was just if someone was going to be on vacation, or something, which would make forgetting to put in picks completely understandable.
What I might propose (if we can get a majority rule vote on it) is that we eliminate Default Picks in the future and instead allow for up to two weeks to be skipped with the second of the two weeks resulting in an automatic 0-1 record just for that week. You're reading that right, zero wins, one loss, forfeiture of any consolation prizes if a second week is missed. If a third week is missed, the player would be eliminated. I'm definitely willing to hear suggestions in this regard if anyone feels like a one game loss is not a sufficient penalty for missing one week.
I'd also like to thank everyone for playing and EdCollins for maintaining the standings! I'd like to thank everyone who contributed prizes to this game as well as GWAE for doing his fun thing where actual cash got put on the line based upon our picks!
EDIT TO ADD: What I would probably allow is for a person to make not, "Default Picks," per se such that they stop playing the game and I have to deal with it for the rest of the season (and EdCollins has to also deal with it), but I might accept Picks for two weeks at a time if someone knows they are going to be busy the following week. These would NOT be default picks and there is a precedent for it, anyway. Sometimes, people will look at VegasInsider on Wednesday and say, "Hey, I'm busy over the weekend so the lines might change, but please give me these teams (list of five teams) and I might make different picks later if I have time. I would still accept that.
Since approximate lines are out by Monday every week, I would propose that players be allowed to make picks beginning Monday. I would just say Bills Over and leave the number out. Or Bills plus and leave the number out.
I would bet I travel around the world more than anyone here not named PokerGrinder, and there is always an availability of some internet connection. Giving players from Monday through Sunday morning seems like plenty of time for any willing participant.
By the way, I'm working through my strategy for this weekend. So many players within a single game changing you from 1st to 4th, or vice -versa! I know it might be my best strategy to take a bye week, but the emotional -EV of losing if my picks would have been successful is too great.
Were the Vikings really favorites with 0 for Monday night Kirk Cousins against Mr. Monday night Aaron Rodgers? Without Dalvin Cook? I thought it was typo when I took the Packers....
Of course I'm the doofus who kept overrating the Cowboys and Browns all year.....
Quote: SOOPOOThanks Mission. But WHOLEHEARTEDLY against allowing a 0-1 week as an option. It is certainly possible that taking an 0-1 week in week 17 could ensure you first place if your lead was enough, while a possible 0-5 week would be enough for you to not win.
(Quote clipped, relevance)
Yes, maybe we should keep it as an 0-5 with the third missed week being immediate elimination. I agree with everything else you said. Like I said, I don't mind them being given to me even more in advance than that, but if we eliminate default picks, certainly nobody can pick more than one extra week out at a time.

I never pick over/under...... But over 48 Falcons Bucs looks good!
Quote: SOOPOO...I never pick over/under...... But over 48 Falcons Bucs looks good!
Why?
Quote: AyecarumbaWhy?
I just started this contest to see if I could be good (over 53%) on picking games. Over/under requires more work, specifically weather forecasts occasionally. I am also less interested in that outcome than the win/loss spread part. If I was a sports bettor I would pay attention to any opportunity. Over the years I have proven to myself my picks are no better than a coin toss.
If you asked 'why' I like that over, both QBs are good for points. And Winston often sets up the opposition for easy points.

I recall that defaults this year are the first 5 non-duplicate games from your ranked list, and only Overs.

Probably a week or so after it ends I'm going to sit down and hammer out all of those details. I have a bunch of people to pay out myself, so I'm going to kind of get how everyone wants it figured out and try to do it in one day. At that time, I'll also figure out who else is paying who and will PM accordingly.

** ah crap.. I was looking at the wrong thing on my spreadsheet last week. I needed 6-0 last week and went 3-3. Guess that means I need a 6-0 this week. I didnt even look at who I picked when I sent them in so maybe I have a chance. I took the first 6 away teams on the list.

The 49ers/Seahawks game is almost certainly a new record, for the most picks on one game.
I think something went wrong on your calcs. I only have them at 3 picks for 49ers and 6 seattle. We dont even have 56 possible picks this week.

Yeah, we can do that. I was also going to try to come up with something for the playoffs in addition to what you’re doing, so that works. We can figure out what everyone owes everyone else at the end and start a new thread for it.

Negative, I’m afraid. Check your PM outbox.
Could still get the 6-0 pay, though. But I expect the Bucs to disappoint me in that as well. Can't bet Florida teams. I hope some of you had money on Miami, though. Good for the fish!
Edit: yes, thank you Bucs, may I have another? No? End of pathetic season? Good riddance.
