Quote: michael99000Not sure if I’d call that a fluke goal. Fluke goal to me means it bounced off a skate and went in , or took a weird bounce on the ice in front of the goalie. This was just a shot that should’ve been easily stopped.
What’s crazy is the shots on goal disparity. Vegas 59 San Jose 29
I agree, just a poor play by Fleury.

Hey, Boz.
I'll go $150 to win $1950. Please confirm.Quote: BozConfirmed $150 to win $1950, you have Vegas Golden Knights to win the 2019 Stanley Cup.
Acknowledging I lost this bet. Boz has been PMd to arrange payment.
Quote: billryanHorrible way to lose. How is it the NHL can review a possible goal ten minutes after it happened but can't review such an obvious bad call?
I thought it was a fantastically bad call myself, but a) I don't know what I'm looking at since I don't follow hockey and b) I wasn't an impartial observer.
I'm told the general rule is, if a collision results in bloodshed, inadvertent or not, it will be escalated to a major penalty.
The part that surprised me (as an ignorant of the rules watcher) was that neither 1 or 2 goals (or even 3) cancelled the remaining penalty time. And ejecting the perp, not just sidelining him for that 5 minutes? Was there more to that than I saw? Or previous actions of his?

I hope this leads to review of majors like they can in the NCAA. These referees also need to be removed from the next round of the playoffs. That was clearly a minor only. A horrible call. He fell in the worst possible way, and it had little to do with the hits he received.

It was a bad call as it should have been 2 minutes. What was worse was the defense giving up four goals in under five minutes. Honestly, it turned out to be a great game which it probably wouldn't have been if a 2 minute penalty was given. I was rooting for Vegas but I would much rather see a more competitive game.
Quote: FinsRuleNo other sport has this harsh a penalty.
What? In soccer the team is down a man for the rest of the game after a red card.

In Rugby and Soccer, if a player is ejected, the team plays short handed the rest of the game in some circumstances. Sometimes it carries over to the next game ,as well.

Babs has paid in full. Appreciate the fast payment and for making the wager.
I thought the VGK were setup to go on a longer run after going up 3-1 in games and with the top seeds losing quickly.
As an East Coaster, I went to bed down 3-0. Sorry Knights fans.
The referees didn't allow four goals on the ensuing power play.

As a series, might be the most spectacular crash and burn ever. How many chances did they have to win a game 4? Up 3-0 with 6 or so minutes in game 7 only to lose it? More than twice the shots on goal in game 6 and they lose?
Yeesh.
Sadly, I also got to see my Yankees blow a 3-0 lead to the Sox.
It was a terrible call but giving up four goals on a power play is sad.
Quote: billryanIt was a terrible call but giving up four goals on a power play is sad.
Though we disagree about the call, there is no excuse for allowing four goals on a power play. None. There will always be calls people don't like...but you still have to play the game!
Quote: FinsRuleNo other sport has this harsh a penalty.
How about the penalty shot in soccer? That’s way more harsh. In a game where typically 2-3 goals are scored combined in an entire game , you’re giving a team a clear shot that’s successful about 80% of the time.
Quote: DRichWhat? In soccer the team is down a man for the rest of the game after a red card.
True, but the amount of offense created by a major penalty may be more than a soccer red card. Lol
Quote: RonCAdmittedly, he fell awkwardly...but, if you caused him to fall with an illegal action (crosscheck) and he ends up injured, it is your fault.

Yeah that was all on Vegas. Sharks tied the record for most goals on a major penalty. I doubt the average number of goals on a major penalty would be above 0.6.

Anyone know how much it will cost to send 1500 pennies?
(-;
A soccer goal is probably worth twice a hockey goal on average.
So if you add up the percentages soccer is probably slightly harsher with hockey having more variability.
I think penalty shots should be harder to convert.

Quote: FinsRuleI think a penalty shot may be more valuable than being down a man. Depends on the game/league probably.

I missed this. A penalty shot is definitely worth more than a minor in the NHL, penalty shots are about 33% effective. A major would be worth more then a penalty shot. Soccer, it would depend on when the red card was given and the player. If a star player got a red card early, I'd take a red card over a penalty kick.
Let's go Blues!!!
There was an epl game where a team had 2 men down yet it was barely an advantage.
So I rank it
Penalty Kick
Major
Red Card (early)
Double minor
Penalty shot
Minor
Edit - DPI in end zone on a Hail Mary is probably around double minor in value.
Quote: FinsRuleI think I meant penalty kick in my post. I’ve been thinking about this a lot.

If we are talking all sports , then the football rule whereby a team about to go in for a touchdown that fumbles the ball through the back of the end-zone , and possession is then given to the other team at their own 20, has to be on this list. The disparity between what was about to happen for the scoring team vs the result is huge.

He was discussing the severity of penalties in various sports. But a foul in your own end zone in football is a safety, and that's pretty severe.

Sometimes teams take safeties on purpose. On average I don’t think a safety is that big of a deal. 2 points and loss of possession in a bad spot doesn’t come close to a penalty kick.

Oh no. It's lower on the list for sure. Probably the value of a ~40 yard PI call.
