There were a couple of women's basketball leagues before the WNBA, but none of them had the deep pockets of the WNBA.
Without the NBA subsidies, I don't think the WNBA could exist. While the league doesn't disclose its finances, by contract, a portion of profits goes into a pool for players. Last year was the first season that money went into the pool. Few businesses can go thirty years without a profit. I'm not sure how the IRS allows it. If a comic dealer went five years without a profit, the IRS would have called his business a hobby and treated it as such.

Rodman was a monster defender and an awesome rebounder

Dennis shot over 60% from the field one year which is quite rare and exceptional for someone who's not a center close to or over 7'0"

This is an example of statistics being misleading. Rodman was a terrible shot and ranked near the bottom in free-throw and 3-point accuracy. His teams didn't run plays for him,but if he got an offensive rebound and had a clear shot to the basket, he was clutch.
He was an All-Time defender and rebounder but scoring wasn't his forte. Most small forwards are scorers. The Pistons had Kelly Tripuks, an All-Star small forward who could score, but they traded him away and gave his job to Rodman.
