Also, do you know which High School Bobby Lane went to? And why it's significant? I do :)

Gee, I forget that school's name. And I can not ask Ewell Walker Jr, ( #37) as he is dead. Maybe I'll ask Matthew Stafford , he might know.

Try Jayne Mansfield or John Hinckley Junior if Matt's a bit busy practicing... ;)

I also remember watching the game where Chuck Hughes died on the field. I remember cutting out all of the newspaper clippings from the newspapers about his death.

You are older than I thought... not that's anything against you of course ;)

I grew up watching the Lions play on the few times they got TV time in the UK... I recall waking my Dad up the night Barry crossed the 2,000 yard mark for a season. He wasn't as impressed with that as much as I was.

Lions showed they were a class act, not just for retiring number 85. Or naming the award for most improved player each year after him. I mean all 40 players and the Joe Schmidt were at the funeral in San Antonio, Texas.

My turn to ask a question. Johnny Unitas was once asked what made criteria he had for saying a quarter back was great. John's answer
I always liked, You can be labeled a great quarterback without having done this, but if you did, you were a great QB.

Hint Bobby Layne did it.

Curse the Lions for 50 years? :)

My guess is something about making players around you better...

I have no idea but just wanted to chime in that I am a huge Johnny Unitas fan. Once had my birthday dinner at the Golden Arm Restaurant. Own 2 throwback number 19 Unitas Jerseys, Home white and away blue. Proudly wore my Unitas Jersey In Vegas 2 weeks ago betting on football, got some neat comments from wearing my jersey.

Actually it is pretty simple. Lead your team to 2 world championships. Bobby did it back-to-back. Was leading lions to another title when late in the season, in a pile-up, he broke his leg in several places. Tobin Rote replace him and the Lions were world champs once again.

The next year the Lions thanked Bobby by trading him. Bobby was one of the last players to play without a face mask. I think 100 year
curse would have been justified. REALLY !

I believe the ghost of Matt Millen must of been haunting backwards in time. Or something.

If you've never read 'Paper Lion' or seen the movie with Alan Alda... you should.

Johnny U had big time fight with Weeb Uebank. John was forbidden to throw any pass against a certain Lion.

Night Train Lane.
I remember a Johnny U story about how an opposing rookie hit him with a cheap shot. The defensive players were pissed at the rookie. Its alright to beat up the QB during the game honestly because Johnny typically didn't throw till the last possible instant and then got creamed. Johnny would just get up and do it again. Total respect from the defence beating him up, but no cheap shots.

Nobody spoke in a Johnny U huddle except Johnny. He did make a small exception for Raymond Berry if Ray thought he could get open and needed to tell Johnny.

Johnny was so honest, if he had a bad game, afterwards when talking to reporters, he didn't mince words, "I stunk it up out there" was a typical response.

Great play caller. When the defence thought pass, Johnny ran a running play. When the defence thought run, Johnny passed.

I miss the high tops shoes.

Another of the great ex-Lions. Always a great player if you get the rules changed due to your own play...

AyeCarumba took over the top spot, that StrictlyAP has held since Week 3. AyeCarumba has gone 19-4 the past four weeks, and 11-0 the past two weeks. Good work.

Buzzard improved from 15th place in Week 9, to 7th place in Week 10... simply by taking Week 10 off!

EdgeLooker has gone 10-2 the past two weeks, and in doing so improved from 16th place to 6th place.

Babs has gone 13-5 the past three weeks, and in doing so improved from 28th place to 14th place.

RDW4POTUS started Week 1 with an 0-5 record, and had an 1-4 record in Week 2, and since then has basically been on fire, moving all the way from 41st place to 3rd place.

ZoomZoom8 didn't have a winning week until Week 6 (!) but has also done remarkably well since then, and is now in 4th place. From Week 6 thru Week 9 he went 18-5!

No one yet has had five consecutive winning weeks, but our host will try to accomplish that with a winning record this weekend. (Actually, if you take out StrictlyAP's bye week in Week 4, he had five consecutive winning weeks... Weeks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6)

If you guys saw Bobby Lane play, you're one up on me.

I was born in Detroit and then soon after our family moved to a small town in northern lower Michigan. I grew up watching the Lions play, but Greg Landry was the first Lions quarterback I remember.

Greg Landry, Steve Owens, Charlie Brown, Herman Weaver, Mel Farr, Lem Barney, Altie Taylor and Chuck Hughes are some of the Lions I remember. I still have football playing cards of some of these players. Some of these players I saw in person when they attended a charity basketball game in our town. I have some of their autographs on the brochure.

I also remember watching the game where Chuck Hughes died on the field. I remember cutting out all of the newspaper clippings from the newspapers about his death.

I take it you don't remember John Henry Johnson either...:-)

Not familiar with that name, so I Googled it.

Nope, it's not a question of remembering. I never new of him. He was before my time. I wasn't yet watching football when I was five. :)

A friend of mine, Ron Finn, was a painting contractor. An upgrade from the 60's when I would return invisible lawnmowers to him
at Sears and we would split the refund in the parking lot. Hey, he had to make them GTO car payments somehow.

Anyway he was hired to paint Johnny U's home. Was covering Hall of Fame bust in main hallway when Johnny U told him just put the damn thing out on the porch. And if Pete Rozelle came by, shove it up his ass. Johnny was a real sportsman and loved to talk about hunting, fishing, anything but football.

His wife had a flower shop and a big basement room had her supplies around the walls. In the center of that room was a big table with all sorts of pictures and programs all over it. Underneath the table was this scuffed up Colt helmet with the number 19 on it. with a
sweat stained chin strap.

I asked Ron if he was tempted to steal it. He said " No Way" and I pretended to believe him. I think it was the idea that if he got caught, and was tried in Baltimore, he would get a 100 year sentence minimum.

According to his daughter, Johnson could not talk or swallow in the final year of his life and also was in a wheelchair.

He and Joe Perry, half of the 49'er Million Dollar Backfield, donated their brain for a study on the effect of multiple concussions.

Yep, I see that now. Sorry. (I now see your name was entered with a colon at the end of it this past week, and my new Weekly Ranking History tab code had a problem with that... it thought Buzzard (with no colon) took the week off, since Buzzard: (with a colon) didn't match Buzzard from prior weeks.) Fixed. Thank you.

Last I heard, Buzz still had a colon. But I'm sure he didn't mind that he got to say, again, that he went 5-0, so you did him a favor.

Note the grading program doesn't recognize MidwesAP's pick of "Niners." (San Francisco, San Fran, SF, and 49ers, among others, are all valid, but not "niners.")

A future version will account for this team name abbreviation too.

For the first time, this week we have more selections for UNDER rather than OVER.

Week 1: Over 21 / Under 15
Week 2: Over 16 / Under 13
Week 3: Over 15 / Under 9
Week 4: Over 20 / Under 16
Week 5: Over 21 / Under 7
Week 6: Over 31 / Under 10
Week 7: Over 23 / Under 10
Week 8: Over 35 / Under 17
Week 9: Over 33 / Under 9
Week 10: Over 29 / Under 5
Week 11: Over 18 / Under 27

Lots of love for the Saints today. (17 selections, including confidence.)
The Chiefs aren't far behind, with 15 selections.
Jets come in 3rd, with 13 selections.

Have a lot of people gave up at this point? If you only pick 5 a week of your choice, shouldn't the total be over 50%? And the winner currently gets $846? The winner-take-all thing is what turned me off the most since I am a poor nit that never watches the NFL, and I knew the average loser would owe ~$20.

Right.

I'm going to have to address that tomorrow when I have my computer at work.

What happened with that is I had compiled all the Picks in a PM to myself which I copy/pasted into the Official thread. During the time I was posting that in the Official Thread, AyeCarumba PM'ed me his Picks, so I accepted them, because the PM hit my inbox while I was posting the picks.

In any event, what I copy/pasted to the program came from my self-PM, so did not include AyeCarumba's picks.

That number is going to drop because of AyeCarumba's 1-4 week.

Furthermore, two people have dropped out, and those two people currently combine for $100+ of that money. Factoring in the remainder, I would suggest that the average player owes a little bit under $20.

We might be looking at some kind of different payout structure next year, I'm sure that will be voted upon.

MinnesotaJoe and NCFatCat are the two drop outs. Again, while I ask that nobody speculate that they are ducking out on paying the losses, (because very few people know anyone else in RL, and anything can happen) I still don't know if I'd expect to see the money from them if I were the winner.

Please note that KMUMF entered the 49ers twice. (Maybe that's a typo and one of them is supposed to be an over/under pick. Maybe not, though.)

Note the calculator doesn't recognize "Radiers" from Boymimbo. This will need to be edited.

Finally, the calculator needs you to remove TheCessPit entirely. It will know he is skipping this week when it doesn't find his name.

Everything else looks good. Good luck to all.

StrictlyAP: Cardinals lock of the year? Really? The consensus begs to differ, by a margin of nearly 3 to 1.

I went 0-4 last week.

It's not easy to do worse than that, but I proved it can be done.

0-6.

I can't believe that if I had gone the exact opposite way all season long, I'd be winning this thing.

Well, you just prove that there's no correlation between talented programming and winner-picking. My condolences once again.

Well, the good news is I won our weekly office pool last week ($75) and I'm still in the running this week. (But I need New England to win outright tonight, and then I need a high scoring game tomorrow night, to win on tie-breakers.)

StrictlyAP was right on the money with his Cardinals pick. What was the basis of this tip?

What was the angle? If you don't mind sharing?

StrictlyAP, congrats on pickings the Cardinals game as the lock of the year. You crushed it.

I'm going to just vent here a little bit.......
I said it last year and it bears repeating after last night's game. RG3 needs to be benched in favor of Cousins. Cousins is the better QB, I believe.
RG3 seems to have cost me a couple of times this year.

Oh and while I'm in an ornery mood.......
Is that Detroit Lions coaching staff the worst in the league, or what?

There's worse out there, but not by much. Coach Swartz has some of the best talent at his disposal right now, so failure to get into the playoffs in the next two years is all on his shoulders....

Mission,

So how should I grade KMUMF's double pick of the 49ers? Just treat it as a Confidence Pick, which it sort of was? Or grade one as a win (since the 49ers covered) and the second pick as a forfeit loss?
