Oh and while I'm in an ornery mood.......
Is that Detroit Lions coaching staff the worst in the league, or what?

Very low football IQ for sure, but consistently worse in the football IQ department are Mike Smith in Atlanta and worse yet Kubiak in Houston. But the organization that from-top-to-bottom demonstrates little understanding of their craft is the Cowpokes, even the Princeton educated coach seems mostly clueless on just about anything. Honorable mention here to Marvin Lewis and Leslie Frasier for regularly pulling some real beauts out of their butts.

Have to agree on Mike Smith. Don't know how I forgot about him. I'm not sure about Kubiak. I think the Dallas problem is more talent (overrated) than anything.
Lewis and Frasier....yep.

The Week 12 Standings have been posted, Week 12 results above:

https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/sports/14893-wov-picks-game-2013-official-thread/6/#post293976

1.) We had a losing week and are .466 combined at 1079-1234 for the season. I'll go back to doing more specifics if we have a winning week!

2.) With five weeks left, technically, no active player is yet eliminated from the competition.

For those using the Calculator...

(1) Edit Miplet's pick of "Saint Louis" to St. Louis or St Louis or STL or Rams. (When the program sees "SAINT" it thinks his pick is the Saints, not the Rams, and reports a conflict because he also picked Seattle, who the Saints are playing.)

(2) Edit JW17's pic of "Chi" to Chic or Chicago or Bears. ("Chi" isn't enough... possible conflict with "CHIefs.")

I can correct both of these in a future version. (Which might not be until next year... we're closing in on the end of this season now.)

Despite these minor edits now and then, I think the program does a pretty good job of figuring out everyone's picks, which as we've seen, are all over the place. (Some players type in caps, some type in lowercase, some players use mascot names, some use cities, some use both, some include the point spread, some omit it, some include both teams when picking over/unders, some just include one team, etc., etc., etc.)

Everything else looks good. Enjoy the games. I'm playing chess all day tomorrow but I'm looking forward to arriving home in the evening seeing how horribly I did this weekend. :)

Thanks again to Mission for hosting.

Please note that Knuckleball3's Picks have been added. They came in reasonably close to the deadline and do not appear to fade the leader in any way. In fact, he and AyeCarumba agree on two Picks.

I wasn't the only one to pick "Saint Louis" . Do the other ones also need editing? What about previous weeks? I don't have Excel or I would check. ( Ok, I have an old version on my craptop, but that doesn't count.

"Saint Louis" was how the name was presented when the line came out.

Perhaps next year, listing each option with a unique three digit number should be reconsidered. It would simplify the sorting.

In all previous weeks we are okay. Prior to this week, no one ever selected the Rams by using term "Saint Louis."

As far as other picks that need to be edited for this week, you are correct. Aluisio an Terepined also picked "Saint Louis" so those two picks need to be edited as well. Good catch. (The program didn't report a conflict for them, thinking they both just picked the Saints, which would have been okay with all their other picks.)

My choice would be for everyone just to use the mascot name (bears, lions, packers, etc.) I think this is also how Mission asked to receive them when he posted his initial example.

I agree. The rule was the nickname. Or the city. All these abbreviations. Make it easier on the moderators!

That's pretty much why, even prior to your program, it made the results look neater. I made the same request last year with about the same percentage of compliance, so I changed them all to the nickname until I got sick of doing it.

The other thing is that it made it easier to memorize without really thinking about it going through results, though that is inapplicable now. For example, if the Bears covered, as I was going through the list, I would always remember that, "Bears," is a win and, "Saints," is a loss, or whoever they played. If the game ended up being Under, it was easy to remember that Bears-Under or Saints-Under was a win and over was a loss while just Bears +6 was a win and Saints -6 was a loss.

I'm not terribly intelligent, though, so for some reason I could not get into as good of a rhythm with it if I had to associate the city name with the mascot as I went through the list. I guess you're technically using more short-term memory if you do that. You're actually up to six items which are the three possible selections and either mascot or city, start throwing abbreviations in there and you could be up to 12 or more items per game.

Next year tell them the exact format - full nick name, result. Give two weeks grace. If not done correctly, no pick.

Harsh, but fair.

I think we were beginning to wonder if you were without power or something.

FYI: The program doesn't recognize Vendman1's CAR pick. (It doesn't know if it's CARolina or CARdinals.) It needs just one more letter. (CARD or CARO and you're okay.)

I should correct this for next year, and assume CAR is Carolina, which is probably always will be.

Enjoy the games.

That sounds good, fortunately, the program makes anything it doesn't like blue, so it's really easy to scroll through and see what it didn't like and then replace the intended pick with the full nickname.

I had to check that the line was the right way round with the 'hawks.

Betting the under in the Lions/Eagles game seems like value right now... the Lions can't hold onto the damn ball.

Coach Swartz might be replaced in the off season if they fail to make play offs, or are one and done. I'd probably support that move, he's turned the 0-16 team around, but with the number of high first round picks on that team, who consistently produce as well (not that many Ryan Leafs now Mayhew is drafting), you expect a lot more. Someone who brings up discipline and good technique.

Paradigm likes Seattle so much he put -3 instead of +3. :+)

I just noticed that typo....hope I get credit for the actual line instead of the one typed :-)....there is a reason my picks to date are no better than flipping a coin!!

When my Excel program is used to grade each week's entries, it actually completely ignores any line listed by the user and instead just uses the actual line we're using. So yes, picking Seattle was a win for you, even though you listed them as the favorite by 3 points. :)

For that reason, no one has to list a line at all but of course it doesn't hurt to do so.

I WISH "I" had flipped a coin each and every week. I almost surely would have a better record than I do now. :)

Nice job, TGarrett! Only 6-0 this week. Jealous I am... :)
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

I'm curious why the lines were posted early this week. Are we fixing the lines earlier now?
