THANK YOU and HOORAY for the correction!
Quote: ParadigmThanks for all the effort both Ed & Mission are putting in to this......despite my miserable performance, it has made NFL football more fun for me this year.
As a follow up question, it seemed like my previous weeks Over Under picks were graded correctly (at least I didn't notice them being wrong before). Did something get changed in the spreadsheet calculator between the previous weeks and this week's glitch?
You're welcome. It's no problem. And Mission is doing far more work than me each week, with having to accept everyone's picks, e-mail reminders, post the picks, etc.
And yes, these past few Sundays I find myself rooting for teams I otherwise would have no interest in, all thanks to this stupid, stupid contest. :) My goal now is to just break .500. How pathetic is that? :)
No, the grading calculator didn't change. Just somehow Mission entered the over/under lines this past week as a "text" entry. (The cell format was changed to text.) I'm assuming he cut and pasted in those lines this past week, and in doing so inadvertently changed the cell format. That's the only thing I can think of. It was fine on my end, because I didn't cut and paste them in. And yes, Week 7 and all of the prior weeks were fine. And as I mentioned before, the code didn't take into account the format might get changed. That's an oversight on the programmer... me. I should have allowed for this possibility.

I preferred it before the correction... everyone was doing much worse, including the leader :D
Nice job catching this one and fixing.

I should point out that I'd be doing far more work than I am currently doing had EdCollins not taken the time to make this most excellent program!
I'm also hoping to break .500!
Now that I read EdCollins' explanation of what could have happened, I'm pretty confident that is what did happen. Last week, I accidentally posted the Over/Under Lines in the spots where the home scores are meant to go, in any event, I figured it wouldn't be a problem just to copy/paste them over to where they are supposed to be and input the Home Scores where they are supposed to go. Unfortunately, it seems that the program didn't like that very much.
Thanks again to Mission and EdCollins for the work on this.
Quote: vendman1...it's hard to anticipate what the end users will do. But Ed's stuff is great. So thanks again guys.
You're welcome, and you're free to say, "It's hard to imagine what the idiot who doesn't know what he's doing will manage to screw-up," I'm willing to accept that...lol I wouldn't know a text box from a digit box from a box of any other kind, except maybe a cardboard box.

If you don't eat those 100 McNuggets, you may find yourself sleeping in a cardboard box.

(JW17 entered "SD" and the program highlighted it in blue, indicating it didn't know what that team was.)
Chargers, Bolts, San Diego, and San D all work, but surprisingly, I failed to include SD.
Quote: EdCollinsA future version will recognize SD as San Diego. Previous versions do not.

4-1 so far with da Bears to go. And the one wrong pick was the only favorite I chose. I wouldn't be surprised if we all had a good week.
If Indy loses, I'm looking at 1-2 on Favorites and 2-0 on dogs.
Quote: rdw4potusAfter going for 2 and failing, Indy's most likely win is now a 2 point margin. That kind of sucks when the line is -2.5...
After going for two and succeeding, Indy's most likely win is a three-point margin, because that's what they are up by with 4:xx to go! This could get good!
Maybe I will have another half-glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and finish watching this...
Quote: rdw4potusSweet! I think that's a perfect week for me:-)
WTG, rdw! I haven't had one of those yet; nicely done!

Sorry my friend, it looks like I screwed the program 2 weeks in a row, with last week I had JAX.
Oddly enough they were both losers.

LOL.
Nope, it's no problem. The program highlights a team with a blue-colored font when it doesn't know what it is.
Both JAX and SD are valid entries to me... the program should know what teams those are. It's kind of fun to add that logic to the program to make it "smarter."
By the time the season is over with I figure I should have every possible abbreviation covered, so we'll be good to go for next year! I'll probably post a link to the latest version tonight.
I still smile when I think of that earlier version that saw "over 49" and thought the pick was the 49ers!
http://www.edcollins.com/wov_nfl_football_contest_calculator_version_1.73.xlsm
Changes in this version:
(1) Forces data in cells to stay as a numeric field, for proper comparisons.
(2) SD is now a valid entry for the Chargers.
3) Added a new tab... a Weekly Ranking History tab!
This new tab keeps track of each player's weekly ranking. For example, just four weeks ago, at the end of Week 5, ZoomZoom8 was in 28th place. But in Week 6 he moved to 16th place, and then climbed to 9th place, and then 5th place, and is now in 3rd place! This tab keeps track of each player's rankings and each player's weekly score, at a glance.
Enjoy.

Ed,
I get a runtime error 75 at the end of grading. Debug points to this:Open "c:\summary_table_for_wizard_forum.txt" For Output As #1
It might be difficult to re-create that error at my end. During my testing I never saw it. Is there any chance something is up with your C:\ drive? Were you getting that same error with prior versions?
You can always disable this option, in the user options tab, (Cell D-15) so the program doesn't even make an attempt to create this summary table. For now that should get around that error.
Thanks again.
- Ed
I could have sworn I included that, but I might be thinking of another NFL program of mine.
That's definitely worth including. Good eye and thanks.
But what IS wrong is that the program failed to highlight that in blue, and it should have. That's something to debug at my first opportunity.

Quote: 10DollarBriEd,
I get a runtime error 75 at the end of grading. Debug points to this:Open "c:\summary_table_for_wizard_forum.txt" For Output As #1
(1) Runtime error #75 is a path/file access error.
Since the statement opens the file for output, the file doesn't have to exist prior. It if does, that's okay and the contents are simply overwritten. Since I will assume you do have a C:\ drive, I suspect the file didn't get closed properly, possible the result of one of your earlier runs. If the operating system already thought the file was open, you should then get this error. Otherwise I can't imagine why you might get a runtime error of 75.
If you reboot, or delete that text file and start over, I suspect you might be okay.
(2) It turns out I WAS checking for TB... just not properly. (Bug in code.) This is fixed for a future version. For now, all TBs will have to be changed manually to Tampa Bay or Tampa or Tam or Buccaneers or Bucs, etc.
I looked for that txt. file on my c drive and didn't find it. I just selected no on the option as you suggested and problem solved. Thanks.

No problem. Another possibility is that the root folder of your C:\ drive is write-protected. If so, the program wouldn't have authorization to create a text file there and that would probably also produce that message.
Thanks. NO should be the default setting anyway.
The updated Week 9 Standings have been posted:

The Thursday games are not eligible for this contest, so the lines are usually not posted here. Good Luck in Vegas!

3.) Sunday/Monday games will be the only games considered. Every player must pick exactly five winners against the Spread, exactly five Over/Unders, or a combination totalling exactly five.
Minor F-Up, Seattle is -6 not +6, correction made, PM's to anyone who made the Pick.

For now, I'm skipping, but I reserve the right to change my mind within two hours. Have to look through and see if there are any weeks in which I like the matchups even less...
EDIT: Okay, playing. All dogs. I hate doing that, but there are no favorites I really like this week.
Fixed in version 1.84. SF is now valid for San Francisco.
(2) The program had a problem with Ten2Win's "49er's" pick, with that apostrophe. Fixed in 1.84. 49er's, with or without an apostrophe, is now valid.
(3) Version 1.73, with the new Weekly Ranking History tab code, crashed. Fixed in 1.84.
If you cut and paste Mission's picks for Week 10 into the program, you might notice an extra blank line after KeyerSoze's name. You can clean this up if you want to, but all versions of the program handle this extra blank line fine.
Version 1.84 is here: http://www.edcollins.com/wov_nfl_football_contest_calculator_version_1.84.xlsm
If you're using a version PRIOR to 1.73, you can just edit Vendman and Ten2Win's 49ers pick as mentioned above. If you're using version 1.73, you will want the latest version to avoid that crash.
Week 9 I was 22 ans 22, close enough to 500 for me as Math is not my long suit.
And week 10 Oh My. A mere 5 and 0 !
Quote: BuzzardSo my plan was to stay at close to 500 for the first 8 or 9 weeks. Then with half the season over, new coaches settled in, players more defined etc. I would be in a position to actually handicap based on past performances this year and not last.

Very nice, Buzz....I was 5-0 with :40 to go: Detroit won but missed the spread by .5 when Chicago scored. Still, pretty happy with the results, though I didn't catch up to you any; Dallas to go tonight.

Buzz,
Were you a wound-picker as a child?
Quote: BuzzardGuess who had Chicago, darling ?
Thrpp. I half wanted over time. Then I wised up and wanted a guaranteed win for the Lions. Maybe I should stop picking them :)
Though I got Lions at -1 on Bodog before kick off (went 3-0 with real money this week, which is always nice).
In 1958, the Lions traded Layne to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Layne responded to the trade by supposedly saying that the Lions would "not win for 50 years". For the next 50 years the Lions had the worst winning percentage in the NFL.
And have not been to the Superbowl.
Quote: BuzzardI saw Bobby Lane playing for Detroit.

You think I don't know this? You think I've not seen the ONLY win in the play offs the Lions have ever had in the post Superbowl era? You don't need to tell me about the Paper Lions, Buzz.... (a grin and a scowl).
Also, do you know which High School Bobby Lane went to? And why it's significant? I do :)
I was born in Detroit and then soon after our family moved to a small town in northern lower Michigan. I grew up watching the Lions play, but Greg Landry was the first Lions quarterback I remember.
Greg Landry, Steve Owens, Charlie Brown, Herman Weaver, Mel Farr, Lem Barney, Altie Taylor and Chuck Hughes are some of the Lions I remember. I still have football playing cards of some of these players. Some of these players I saw in person when they attended a charity basketball game in our town. I have some of their autographs on the brochure.
I also remember watching the game where Chuck Hughes died on the field. I remember cutting out all of the newspaper clippings from the newspapers about his death.
Gee, I forget that school's name. And I can not ask Ewell Walker Jr, ( #37) as he is dead. Maybe I'll ask Matthew Stafford , he might know.
