Sorry you lost two dollars on the race. That must suck standing in the two dollar line.
Quote: treetopbuddyterapined.....the quickest way to get a feel for "odds on" horses would be to back test thousands of races using the charts. Go equibase.com click on results then click historical charts. You can look at every race going back to 1993 for every track in the country. Tons of data. It's fun to test ideas using the charts.
the cowboys there are all hat no cattle. Don't use Lone Star.
1st off, It only takes a few min to scan the days races. That's about all the time I am willing to put into this. I just wanted to get a feel for the system. You may be right, I compile over a thousand races and may get a positive number. I decided to backtrack Woodbine and Lonestar for the month of may just because I thought I would get lots of data. I was surprised Woodbine came up with nothing. I'll keep going forward for a while because that's todays world, 1993 data may not apply due changes in the sport.
What does "cowboys there are all hat no cattle" mean? Hate to drop lonestar from the evaluation, its given me the most data and data is few and far between. Is there another track out there that has the kind of data I need going forward replacing Lonestar? Large fields, high handle? Todays small fields are pitiful. Wasn't always like this.

treetopbuddy wants me to exclude Lonestar due to "Cowboys there are all hat and no cattle" I have no idea what that means. Will consider dropping Lonestar from the evaluation and recompiling stats but I need a valid reason I can understand. Also would like a suggestion on a good replacement track.
The suggestion is to now consider races where the 2nd favorite horse goes off at 4 to 1 or longer is absurd. You just don't find races like that. The Stewards just don't want to put out uncompetitive races, 1 great horse and 9 dogs.

O.K.....horse racing does carry significant variance. No system is immune to losing streaks. It's not unusual to find second pick in this setup to be close to 4-1. It's certainly not absurd as you stated. The bigger the separation between first and second pick the better. If you hit 3 out of 4 races you essentially break even.
The Stewards do not put together races. That job is done by the Racing Secretary. The Condition Book sets races for the meet and is used as a guide by the Racing Secretary. If a horse is eligible for the conditions of the race then he or she may be entered into race. Believe me all horse races are competitive at all levels.
Quote: BuzzardTree, this system is like so many. Shades of American Turf magazines. Watch for later races, don't bet a particular track, qualify the odds on the second choice, and what next ?
Don't argue with him Buzz, he knows more than all of us. The system he gave us was a gift we must cherish.

What next?......The horse must have new jockey, jock must be apprentice and one pound over and Christian, first time blinkers, second race off bench 60 day+, Bullet work in 15 moves or more.. 7-10 days before race, front wraps, first off geld, purse 20k+, first time for distance, turf to dirt, auction price 35k+, trainer has two drug hearings, new silks announcement, change in ownership, late jockey change, one gate scratch , shipper, first start on track, off bute, owner is betting another horse, grooms betting the horse, re-shoed before ran, must be sunny day, 100k or more place pool, 4/5 or less in 10 horse races to place.
Found one horse that qualified in 30 years. Paid 2.10 to place so this system produced 5% return.

There is a website - Derbywars.com. (Legal) They have different contests between players. The one I frequent is "Showvivor". They pick 6 races, and all you need to do is pick a horse to show to advance. So for $9 yesterday I competed against like 50 or so people. In the 4th race a bunch got knocked out leaving me and one other person. In the 5th the favorite was off the board and the 2nd favorite placed so I won $500 and the other guy won $100 to complete the $600 prize pool.
They also have standard contests too, where you are getting points for picking win/place. I don't do as well at those, but they can still be fun.

Lousy as usual........BUT I did discover something....I think.
If you would have taken all of those picks today and boxed them with the rest of the field in a trifecta then you would have won a net of $16.80
with having to wager $266 in order to win $282.80 (this is assuming that I am doing the math properly since this horse stuff is new to me). So in having seen this I thought I would go back and see what the results would've been. I could only go back to May 31st. since that is as far back as the Arlington Park results go on their website. But WOW......I think that I may be on to something here (again, assuming that I am doing the math correctly).
I would have wagered $4,366.00 to box the field with my picks in each race for $1 trifecta. The winnings would have been $5,079.80. A net win of $713.80!!!
Pinch me...............

Your also taking liberties on which tracks are being used. Remember place pools 100k plus. You are also qualifying horses that don't meet the 4/5 or less standard. You have used horses that have gone off at larger than 4/5 odds. It looks as if your forcing plays. You have to let them come to you. The qualifiers are not that rigorous.

Quote: treetopbuddyterepined......appreciate your evaluation of system but you're making a key mistake in calculating results. The wins are being added as a payoff against a dollar and losses are being subtracted as 2 dollar bets. It appears as if your looking at final odds in the chart which reflect payoffs against a dollar not two. So if a loss equals -2 then wins should reflect payouts on 2 dollar bets not on 1 dollar.
Your also taking liberties on which tracks are being used. Remember place pools 100k plus. You are also qualifying horses that don't meet the 4/5 or less standard. Good job yesterday.....having house money at the track makes for one fun day.
I appreciate the input and suggestions. The pluses and minus are correct because W P S payouts on the board are always based on a 2 dollar bet. So if place pays 2.40. its a .40 cent profit subtracting the 2 dollar bet. If the race is a loss , its -2.00.
I am taking a bit of a liberty on the 4/5 odds or less so you have a point there. I am considering all horses going off at .90 or less. Thats technically 4.5/5 odds but on the big board, a track will round down the odds to display on the board to 4/5 on any horse going off at .90.
You are absolutely right that I am not checking the handle on place.
I will continue the evaluation but call it "Treetopbuddy system modified by Terapined"
Just doing this for kicks and interested in seeing the results.
If you have any suggestions on tracks to add and drop, I will consider that.
No offense treetopbuddy, but I don't think I need your system...............this is working just fine.
