I received an e-mail as well. This site automatically sends me an e-mail informing that a PM has been received.

The site sent you an E-Mail, then, I did not. Unintended consequence. I doubly-apologize, then, all the same.

How dare you send us unsolicited PMs, along with the automatic emails we received!!! You should be banished forever!!!

With that said, I would like to join in your contest. :)

I will be passing mainly because my picks have been awful the past 2 years.

I do hope you do publish the picks though. I'm sure I can manage to lose a ton of money betting those picks when I'm in Vegas later this month. :)

Thanks, EdgeLooker, I'm glad to add you to the roster!

I'm sorry you won't be playing, SoulHunt79, and unfortunately, the picks will only be published after the games have already been played. This is basically so that a leader with only one other player in striking distance can't adopt the, "Mirror the guy behind him," strategy thereby making it impossible for said guy to get ahead.

Whoa! Mission sent pm's to a bunch of people, me included, and if the others are the same as mine, what is anyone complaining about? He is starting a sports gambling contest, and is inviting members to participate. Since it is very low stakes (you can lose $5 for the entire NFL season), and he won't be making a dime, I see nothing wrong! If YOU do not like having to receive that ONE pm from him, then block him!
By the way, for those who do not always have internet access from Friday til Sunday kickoff, you can pm Mission your picks before Friday, you just won't know the exact line you will be getting, but you won't need to miss a week.
Thanks for doing the work, Mission.
I have joined. Someone will be $5 richer!
Also, interesting that you picked .600. Regular season will have 85 picks. That will be 51- 34. I'd be surprised if anyone makes it to 51 wins. Good luck all!

1.) I appreciate your defense of my procedures, but reiterate my humble apologies to those offended. The response to the PM's has been mostly positive, fortunately, with over half of our roster joining as a result of the PM's. The most common response I have gotten is via PM people declining for one reason or another, but specifically thanking me for the invitation. Very kind words, and I appreciate those who took the time to respond in such a fashion, even if they are not playing.

2.) Your point about pre-making your picks is also a good one. I would advise using www.bodog.net if someone is going to do that because that will be my source unless that site happens to be down on Friday, in which event I would defer to the USA Today. The closer you are to Friday, theoretically, the closer the line will be to what you are actually going to get on Friday.

3.) You're welcome.

4.) It is possible to lose more than $5.00, if the winner has a winning percentage greater than .601 and you do not, then you lose the greater of $5.00 or the games off you are from having a .601 winning percentage. That's the only way, though.

5.) I picked the .601 because I thought that would be a good point where someone may deserve to win more than $5.00 from some people for picking that well. Furthermore, if someone were to pick that well and lose, I did not think it was necessary for them to lose more than $5.00.

I'll take a stab at it.

I've never been good at sports betting but will give it a try at this low introductory price!

A quick couple of questions:

Are the lines you post the "permanent " ones. I'm guessing there is a final line just prior to kick off, but we all use the one you post?

Is the confidence pick included as one of the 5 picks. Or would it be a 6th pick?
I don't know everything but I know a lot.

Great to have you aboard, Ten2Win!

1.) The lines that I have posted are the permanent ones and will always come from www.bodog.net at some point on Fridays. The only exception is if BD is down, then they will come from the USA Today.

2.) The confidence pick is both optional and included as one of the five picks. It's a gambit, given that it counts as two wins or two losses...I have seen similar games where it can only count as two wins and every loss is just one loss, no falsely inflated winning percentages here, though.

I'd also like to apologize to Comcast. I referred to Comcast as multiple filthy and vile things, including accusations that they participate in an incestuous relationship with their collective mother...forcefully...prior to realizing that my Internet connection itself was just fine and Comcast, as always, was achieving peak performance with peerless Internet speed and Download Times.

So if the winner is 52-33 (the lowest win total over 85 games to exceed .601), and you are 42-43, you would owe the winner $10? Am I correct?
If it is clear you will lose after 11 weeks, say, and you stop picking, do you only lose $5? Even if you were 15 'games behind'? Am I missing something?

That's exactly right. However, to the second question, it goes by games behind .601, so say you had picked for 11 weeks (Max 55 Picks, assuming no, "Pass") and you were 20-35, that'd put you fourteen games from .601, if I am not mistaken, so you would owe $14.00 IF the winner finished with a record x>.601

That does bring up an interesting idea, though. Do you think we should have an amendment to the Rules by which if one publicly forfeits at any point prior to Week 11 kick-off, he/she automatically owes $5.00 and everyone else is subject to the described Rules?

Alternatively, we could make it an automatic $5.00 if the winner is x>.601 unless the loser(s) is over .601, then we would go the wins away from winner's winning percentage OR $5.00, lesser of the two route. If the winner is x<.601, same thing, lesser of $5.00 or wins away from winner's winning percentage.

These questions are open to everyone. The prize that I am paying the winner is fixed, so this really only affects players.

LOL!! I really don't care, but you have ALREADY accepted players under defined rules, and to change them now would be a mistake. I just wanted you to clarify them, and now I understand. There is another challenge going on here at WoV that will be resolved (hopefully?) in around one month.

Progress Report

1.) There are fourteen players who are committed to playing in Week 1 from whom I have received eleven sets of picks.

-The remaining three players will receive a PM from me at 01:00 on 9/9/12 to let them know that Picks will be due by 13:00 EST on 9/9/12 lest the first week end up being their skip week should they choose to continue.

2.) S2DBaker is a definite Week 2 start and TheBigPaybak is a, "Maybe," for Week 2. Pursuant to the Rules, Week 1 is their skip week and they must make selections for weeks 2-17.

3.) There are eighteen remaining PM's that have not been opened, most probably because the Members to whom the PM's were sent have not logged in since last night, or because they were ignored. We can hope that these will be opened. The PM's Opened to New Players ratio is 5:1, so the expectation is three more players if all of these PM's are opened by then. I doubt they will be, but hopefully we'll get at least one more player out of it and maybe someone who wishes to start Week 2.

I honestly don't really know how this works. Are there more simple instructions for this thing?

I'll try:

1.) I will post the Lines on Friday from www.bodog.net, unless that website is down, in which event they will come from the weekend edition of USA Today.

2.) Every player will make five picks per week, these picks may be the posted Over/Unders, against the posted Spreads, or any combination of Over/Unders and Spreads.

3.) The Picks will be PM'ed to me unless a Member is banned, if a Member is banned, then the picks are to be E-Mailed to me. E-Mailed picks will ONLY be accepted from banned Members.

4.) There may be an optional, "Confidence Pick," every week. The, "Confidence Pick," will count either as two wins or two losses. This is not a seperate pick, it is merely a designation given to one of the five picks made.

5.) The results for the previous week will be announced every Tuesday and standings will be updated.

6.) Every player who participates in Week 1 will have the option of, "Skipping," any week of their choosing, but they don't have to. If a Player misses a week, then that will automatically be the skipped week. Players who start in Week 2 must make picks for every week.

7.) If two (or more) people are tied in winning percentage at the end of Week 17, the tiebreaker will consist of SB predictions made AFTER the teams playing in the SB are known. Those who are tied will submit the winning team, the margin of victory, and the number of TD's thrown in the game, the tie will be broken in that order. If two (or more) people PM me the same thing, both will be sent a PM requesting that they change at least one aspect of their picks.

PAYS:

The amount that people will pay depends somewhat on the winner's winning percentage and their own.

1.) If the winner has a winning percentage over .601 and a loser has a winning percentage over .601: The loser will pay the lesser of $5.00 and the number of games they were away from having the winner's winning percentage.

2.) If the winner has a winning percentage of over .601 and a loser has a winning percentage of under .601: The loser will pay the greater of $5.00 or the number of games they (the loser) were away from having a record of .601.

3.) If the winner has a winning percentage under .601, every loser will pay the lesser of $5.00 or $1.00 for every game it would take to reach the winner's winning percentage.

***Basically, it's $5.00 or less unless the winner does better than .601.

4.) The winner also receives a $25 prize from me.

Absolutely.

There was going to be a possible split if the record was the same at the end of Week 17, with the option of deciding to settle it the SB picks way, by agreement of the parties. I mainly got rid of that because of the $25 I am throwing in. I also considered having the SB decide only the $25 and the winner(s) could chop the Regular Season money if they saw fit, but decided that for such a small total sum, winner-take-all is best.

That's actually one of my motivations for limiting the potential losing amount of anyone who finishes above .601. It would kind of suck to do that well and lose as much as someone who may have finished sub-.400.

Alright, unfortunately I'm going to have to drop out before I even start. I have a pretty bad history of giving up quickly on these type of things, and I just don't want to have to worry about figuring out ways to transfer money.

I'm sorry, I hate to be one of those people, but it seems like you've got a good group without me.

Good luck to everyone, and I'm sure my picks would have gone 5-0 this week, haha.

Good luck to everyone, and I'm sure my picks would have gone 5-0 this week, haha.

It's perfectly understandable.

I would say that if you are going to give up, early would be the way to do it. The reason is that if the winner finishes above .601, and you are running below .601, there would be less games that you are below .601, thus less money you would owe the winner.

For example, if you were 1-4 and gave it up, then you would only be three games away from .601 and would therefore owe $5.00. If you finished 17-68, however, you would owe $34 if the winner finished better than .601.

We do have a very strong group, I'll admit, but I hate to lose anyone, especially someone such as yourself who I greatly enjoy reading. At the same time, however, I would thank you for bowing out gracefully and let you know that your decision does nothing to change my high opinion of you as a Member of WoV.

If you wish, I will post the results of your Week 1 picks as you have already sent them to me. However, if you change your mind you must post that you will play, in-thread, prior to 13:00 EST tomorrow.

Thank you BigPete88, the PM's were sent out at 01:00. All picks (including RStrata's) are in. I'd also like to officially welcome RStrata to the game.

If we have anymore last minute people, PM picks will be accepted for nineteen more minutes. Fear not, however, if you wanted to participate but cannot PM in the next nineteen minutes, anyone is welcome to start the game for Week 2, but you MUST pick every week.

Greetings,

The following is a link to the newly created OFFICIAL thread for this game. This thread is only for the purposes of easy access to Lines, (Beginning with Week 2) Results and Standings. I would thusly respectfully request that nobody post in the official thread (link below) other than myself.

This will remain the proper thread for all things pertaining to this game, with exception to official Lines/Results/Standings.

Thanks for doing all the leg work for this Mission! Would it be easier to administer if the possible choices were assigned a number each week? That way there should not be any confusion regarding a side or over/under.

For example:

101 Chicago +3
102 Green Bay -3
103 Over 44.5
104 Under 44.5

201 San Diego Even
202 Oakland Even
203 Over 46.5
204 Under 46.5

You're welcome, I'm glad you like the game!

I believe that is a good suggestion if there were a way to create, "Bubbles," that have to be clicked. However, that is beyond the realm and scope of Forum functionality, so my concern would be that it would be very, VERY, easy to typo when one is submitting one's picks.

The Administration of this game is especially easy. While people may also format their picks in any format that is readily comprehensible to me, I also think that people will look at the way that I format the results and say, "OK, so that's probably how he wants them." There will be no formatting Rule, though, so people may still format in any fashion that is convenient for them, though they are certainly welcome to make my easy job even easier if they want to.

It's not even that time-consuming, to be honest. The key is just trying to stay on top of it as the games happen, and pre-formatting the Picks and getting them all in one spot (Self-PM) prior to the games starting. The advantage to this is that I can copy/paste all of it into a new PM box with Yahoo! Sports scores on one Window and the picks on the other. Just go from window-to-window and compare. The biggest session was compiling the PM's, the second largest was compiling the results after the first set of games on Sunday...the latter only took seven minutes!

It's just about time/workload management and operational efficiency, two of the very limited set of things that I am good at!!!

Man, wish I had time for this. I was camping over week one, in fact I only caught about 2/3 of my Broncos on the radio. Oh well, the rest of you enjoy! Maybe I'll join in later on (haven't read the rules yet, not sure if I can).
