I recently came across a bank of an "all time top 5" slot game: IGT's original Red Hot Jackpots. This game awards linked minor progressive awards at the completion of a free spins bonus round, which got me thinking about etiquette and ethics of slot machine play for this game and others like it.
As awards are paid when the free spins end, it is possible for a player who starts a bonus game later than another player to complete the bonus first and collect a larger progressive prize. The difference in value for Red Hot Jackpots can be as low as $20 to as much as $200 for the first two levels on a $0.02 demonization machine (100 credit or $2 per game). It can be even more in other slot machines.
Is it wrong to "fast play" bonuses on Red Hot Jackpots and similar games to increase your return? Is it bad form? Is proper casino etiquette to allow players who start the bonus game first to complete their game? Do you consider the value of the awards before making a decision?
Basic explanation of the game:
Red Hot Jackpots is 5-reel slot machine with four progressive awards.. The first three progressives are only awarded through a free spins bonus round. The highest one can be won through the free spins and by 5 of a kind of the highest paying symbol. Free spins (8) are initiated by three or more scattered RED HOT JACKPOTS (RHJ) symbols. The number of symbols determines starting level (3 starts level 1, 4 on level 2, and 5 on level 3). During the free spins, players collect RHJ symbols to move to higher levels (8, 20, and 50). Three or more scattered RHJ adds eight additional spins. Line pays are awarded normally with progressives only awarded at the end of the game. Player receives starting and ending less awards (so 3 scattered RHJ in paid game and 28 collected in game wins level 1 and level 3 prizes).

Not wrong to play quickly, but even then, you might re-trigger too often and finish last. You really should try to get away from a mentality $20 is going to make a difference. I wouldn't worry about it.

Nope. You do what you want.
Etiquette? Slow play? That’s kinda like saying that people who don’t pay their dues and play the lottery every week, shouldn’t be allowed to play when the jackpot is large.

Superstitions are silly, childish, irrational rituals, born out of fear of the unknown. But how much does it cost to knock on wood? 😁

They should be allowed to play. Just not to win.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.
