Recently watched a player only betting pair plus and 6 card bonus. No antes and therefore no matching play bet. I missed most of his playing and didn't have a chance to assess his stats nor did I ask him how he fared. Is this a common strategy never playing to win against the dealer?

In Vegas, it's fairly common for people to just play the Pair Plus. The dealer will even convince players to bet on it saying "That's where the money is!" However you will be lucky to get a pair or better 1 out of 9 hands in 3CP.

That's the right play if there's an in the money progressive. It's the best way to play multiple hands, since it's cheaper than playing blind.

I don’t think that is allowed in Atlantic City.

But I see people do it very often with the Aces Up bet in 4 card poker

I’ll tell you something really funny: Some casinos won’t let you do that, you have to be playing the main game.

That's what I have observed as well.

In the UK there's also a prime sidebet and many people don't play the basic game but only the sidebets.
